Mutual Admiration Society

Peggy Filer is a friend and co-worker who said I should start my own mutual admiration society. Actually, she just said she was texting her siblings, nieces, nephews, and others just to tell them that she was grateful for them. And she said to try it to see if the results were as entertaining as hers were. Or something like that.

I have known Peggy for twenty-something years. She teaches health and teaches all the freshmen about being safe and healthy. She tells...

My Complaint about Digital Photographs [1]

I have only one complaint about digital photographs. They are too real.

Digital photographs are amazing. Even the pictures people take with their phones are high quality. You see these photos on the internet or even just on people’s phones and they are amazing. So realistic that it seems you are in the scenery or can touch the people in the picture. Which is, of course, my complaint.

When you lose loved ones, you want them to still be around. You miss them beca...

Thank You Veterans

Thank you veterans. For serving. For protecting. For defending these United States and its constitution.

Most of us have never stood beside you on the front lines or the rear guard or even on the military bases around the world. Some do not even stand beside you when you stand at attention for the American flag. But we have stood beside you in line at the grocery store. We have seen you across the street or down the hall or in the next cubicle. We may not even have known you were a veteran....

Weather Wimpier

I do not know when it happened, but I have become a weather wimp.

If you are ever out on a sunny but crisp day and see somebody bundled up while everybody around him has got on a tank top or less, you might live in the Pacific Northwest. It is a common sight around here. “Sun’s out, gun’s out” is not just for the tropics or California. It seems that around here, everybody (except the visitor) has shorts and tank tops or no tops when the sun comes out. Even when it is freezing outside. Locals...

Kids Say the Darndest Things [1]

It has been a while since my children have really done so, but kids say the darndest things.

It is funny the things you remember when the kids get older and move out or get ready to move out or just wish they could move out. (Sometimes you wonder who is doing more wishing, but that is another story.) I think back to the days when the children were really young and how adorable they were. Not that every kid is adorable, mind you. I just know that mine were. And I remember some of the cute thi...

Bake and Release

A friend of mine likes to bake and release. It is a great concept that I wish more of my baker friends would do. And that I wish I could do too.

Chelsea is a great baker. She bakes cookies and cakes and all sorts of delectable treats. Sometimes she shares those treats with our staff. It is her way of satisfying her joy of cooking and her desire to stay away from too many sweets. Which is why Chelsea bakes and releases said treats to those around her. Of course, her practice makes those aroun...

My Blog Writes Itself

Sometimes, my blog just writes itself. Other times, it seems I have never put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard.

I have been blogging since 2006. Some weeks, I do not seem to have enough time to write all the ideas that I have. Other weeks, I struggle to get one word on the page. Actually, the words come, but I struggle to get any coherent thoughts on the page. It is not writer’s block (a mere myth). It is something else altogether. I just do not know what it is. I am probably just mental...

None of the Above

We were talking about politics at lunch the other day and the film Brewster’s Millions came up. Now, I know how I am going to vote in the presidential race.

Everybody knows that you are not supposed to talk about politics, finances, or religion in polite company or groups of more than one, but sometimes we break those rules. This particular short political conversation started when one of my colleagues was reading another’s water bottle and asked, not so innocently, “Does that say Trump?”

Th...
