John was coming down in the lift in the middle screen. Rachel checked her watch. They had less than a minute to go and there was still no sign of Charlie. She tapped the guard’s desk impatiently. John was in the lobby. Still no Charlie. Her phone alarm buzzed. She hesitated, but this was the plan as they all agreed. She patted her companion guard on the shoulder.
“You won’t remember me,” she whispered in his ear and left the guard room.
The building was starting to empty. Staff were busily making their way downstairs, bundling their paperwork with them. There were no checks for leaving the building. There was no such thing as sensitive information in journalism. The flow of people flooded the lobby. Subtly, she joined John’s side.
She took hold of his hand, pushing her thought into his head. Charlie’s not back yet.
John glanced back at the lift. If they went after him they would draw attention to themselves. She waited for him to make the decision. John was a professional. He kept walking towards the door.
“He’ll be okay. Lets get out of here.”
They joined the tail end of the work force, eyes focused on the exit. Two doors stood side by side to create a two way flow of traffic, but at this time of day everyone pushed out as quickly as they could through both doors. John tightened his grip and pulled her through the mash of bodies, but she hit one going the other way and was knocked back. She kept her balance and was ready to stick the idiot with an angry elbow. Then she froze.
Mark. He hadn’t really been looking at her, but the moment their eyes met she watched him recognise her in utter bewilderment – his ex–girlfriend. He was as surprised as she was. He started to move, as though to grab her and she ran. Her tiny frame pushed through the bottleneck at the door. Let me through! Suddenly a wave passed through the crowd. They all side stepped and for a brief moment the exit was clear. She made a dash for it.
The hot air hit her face. She struck the pavement with her feet, finding John’s silhouette in the darkness ahead. She grabbed his hand while still running, dragging him into the graveyard entrance.
“Cops,” she panted.
John looked back. “Two of them. Take a left.”
There was a small dip in the wall around the graveyard. They climbed it with ease and slipped out to the other side. More commuters were joining the pavement. John took her hand again and this time she made sure she didn’t let go. He took another sharp corner which opened up into a wider stretch of road. The traffic grew heavier. They slipped down a back alley. Rachel recognised it only by the car parked where they had left it.
She jumped in the passenger seat trying to swallow the vomit rising in the back of her mouth.
“Gun in the glove box,” John said, coolly starting the engine.
He started to pull the car away joining the traffic with impatient urgency. A few horns blasted at them and then the drivers found something else to be annoyed with. She pulled Charlie’s Glock from the glove box and held it tightly, all the time wondering if she would actually be able to use it on him.
“Keep it down by the door, like I showed you,” he said, fixing his eyes to the road.
“It was Mark,” she said, as though that made a difference – a cop was a cop.
“Mark?”
“My Mark.”
“He recognise you?”
“I’d say so.”
“Shit.”
“What if he finds Charlie?”
“Then we’ll have eight hours before they ship him off to the Institute.”

L E Fitzpatrick was born in Hull, East Yorkshire, but now lives in West Wales, with her family plus lots of dogs and cats. She manages an office, volunteers as a room steward for the National Trust and also supports independent authors as a proofreader and beta reader. I’m riveted and distracted as he walks around to the driver’s window and hands him the money to pay my fare before he walks back around and opens my door. Clutching my bag of dirty fun in one hand and my purse in the other, I look up at him in awe as he stands there with his hand out and a perceptive grin.
“C’mon, gorgeous. Time to come inside.”
“Thought that was your job,” I say, forgetting that I’m sitting inside the cab and within earshot of the driver.
Daniel laughs before grabbing my hand and helping me to my very shaky feet, causing me to reach out and grab his biceps. “Shit,” I mutter under my breath as I’m gently moved sideways so that he can shut the car door behind me.
With a double tap on the roof of the cab, he bends slightly before scooping me up into his arms, one wrapped around my shoulders and the other underneath my knees. “Whoa, Superman. Pulling out all the stops?” I lean forward so that my mouth is right by his ear. “You do know I’m a sure thing tonight, right?”

Ebooks or Print Books?

What do you prefer to read? Ebooks or print books?
An author friend on Face Book just posed this question. Immediately I responded eBooks! So did other many other people for a variety of reasons, a lot more than I had expected. My but times have changed. A little over a decade ago, the majority of readers acted as if eBooks were the devil. I wasn’t one of them. I’ve always thought eBooks were cool.
First of all, I think they’re cool. I’m a Trekkie from way back and I love using the advanced technology we used to only dream about.
I prefer eBooks for several other reasons as well.
I live in a small house with a large family. Space is very limited thus I don’t have a book shelf anymore. My print books consist of a few cook books, my scriptures, and five romance novels that friends gave to me and which I’ll probably regift once I finish. I can store a lot of books on my iPhone’s Kindle app and it’s so convenient and space saving as I already carry my phone with me everywhere. Thus my library goes everywhere with me and if I get stuck waiting for a doctor’s appointment or in a long line at the grocery store, my reading material is easily accessible.
Secondly, my eyes aren’t as agile as they used to be. Even with progressive glasses, I have trouble reading small print. Ebooks let me enlarge the print to an easily readable font. The backlight helps me to see better also.
I also appreciate the fact that no one can see the cover of the book I’m reading. I read romance and even erotic romance. My kids and even random strangers have made unappreciated comments about the print books I’ve been reading in public based on the cover. It’s no one’s business but mine what I’m reading!
Don’t forget that there have been a lot of free and discounted books for the Kindle (and Kindle apps) recently. And you can shop for books from the comfort of home at any time of the day. And don’t discount instant gratification. Often I see a really good book promoted by a friend on Face Book and the Amazon Kindle store is just a click away. If I couldn’t get the book instantly, I might change my mind or forget about it by the time I get to a brick and mortar store hours, or even days later.
Ebooks are great for my college student daughter. Not only are they less expensive to buy (and college book fees add up fast!) but the print books get heavy fast! My mom went back to college when she was in her fifties and she was one of the first people to use a suitcase to lug her books.
Of course, eBooks are only as good as your eBook reader’s power source. If you’re away from power for an extended period of time or your battery’s weak and doesn’t last long, then print books rule. Fortunately, my iPhone holds power for a long time. I also keep a charger by my bed, in my car, and at work.
Surprisingly, lack of power was the only complaint this group of people mentioned.
Don’t misunderstand. I don’t dislike print books except when I’m the poor student who has to carry a back-breaking armful. I don’t want print books to disappear the way of the do do. I will admit that I prefer my cook books to be in print as it gets frustrating when the book turns itself off after a few minutes of inactivity. When I’m cooking, I just want to look at a stationary page without having to stop what I’m doing and touch it every few moments so it won’t shut off. There’s probably a smart phone or app that will keep the book turned on for an extended period of time, but if there is, I don’t have it. If one doesn’t exist, I imagine it will soon.
