Keeping It Real: Being in a Boxed Set
In case you missed it,
The Right Pitch
is in a boxed set called Heroes to Swoon For. This is the first boxed set I've ever been included in. First off, I was honored to just be asked, especially with the talented authors that comprise our set. Second, I had no idea what I was getting into. Honestly, my whole goal of being a part of the boxed set was just to expand my readership, which I totally did (Hi Rebecca A!). I also thought that maybe, just maybe, I'd actually break even on a book.
Once the process started, I sat back and listened to the more experienced authors. It's always hard to get a group to decide on one thing, but for the most part, we all got along and agreed on the majority of the items. We each had a task, mine being partying and takeovers. Apparently, that seems to be my expertise! Once the set released, we just sat back and watched our advertising and hardwork to see what happened.
And...I'm happy to report that after only a month of sales for the set and just eight days of sales of The Right Pitch on its own, I have FINALLY broke even on a book, possibly even made a little profit. Woohoo!!!
Now, let me say that I didn't start writing just for the money nor do I plan to quit my day job for writing. A friend explained it perfectly to me and while I still get discouraged at times because I haven't made back my money, I still try to keep this in mind. Basically, it goes something like this...I like to write. Writing is my hobby. Hobbies cost money. If I were a photographer and needed a new lens, I would spend money. With writing, I spend money on editing, covers, etc...The only difference with my hobby is that I have the potential to earn some money back.
Isn't that a great philosophy? It really is, but like I said, it can be discouraging at times when I see how much I've spent and how little I've made. However, my core group of fans and friends that tell me how much they enjoy reading my stories and love my characters make me forget about the entire money aspect and that's what keeps me writing more, more, more! So thank you for that encouragement and support!
As always, I'm way off topic. So the whole point of this is BOXED SETS! Overall, I would say it was definitely a good investment in my time, money, and more importantly, experience. I still don't have any idea on how certain things work, but I have a clearer understanding on some new ideas. Would I do it again? Absolutely and I am! As of now, I'm going to be in two boxed sets in 2015 so stay tuned!!!

D.S. Williams is the author of the supernatural romance series 'The Nememiah Chronicles'.Wife and mother to four demanding teenagers, D.S. Williams started writing at the age of five, when life was simpler and her stories really didn't have to make much sense. When you're five, happily ever after always ended the story and how you got there didn't matter so much.Older and wiser, D.S. Williams has continued to write... and write... and write. With the support and encouragement of her husband and friends, she has finally come to the conclusion that she can't keep hiding from the world forever and should try sharing the numerous novels which have been written over the past 40+ years.D.S. Williams enjoys writing (obviously), reading (voraciously) and making lists (obsessively). She's enjoyed a lifelong addiction to foods starting with 'ch' - cheescake, chocolate and chips - and when it comes to books, she loves a really good cliffhanger. Be warned! She shares her life with her husband of twenty eight years, the Gang of Four and the current furry residents, Tuppence the Groodle and Angus the Bull Mastiff.

Keeping It Real: What I Subconsciously Write
So the more I write books and the more my family/friends read them, the more I realize my writing is a lot deeper than I originally thought. To the stranger reading, you would never know, but to those that know my life story, well, apparently I'm writing it in the form of fiction. Everybody's After Love was loosely based off my real life so let's dissect that one, shall we?
Ideas/Scenes Written on Purpose from Everybody's After Love
*Jules house is actually my real life house, the ugly farm drawings on the kitchen wall and all.
*The night fishing scene came from a memory of night fishing with a sorority sister of mine, L-Marie, and her family.
*I actually taught my husband the gummy worm trick, he decided the red ones catch the biggest fish.
*My husband and I actually met in line for a port-a-potty the first time we ever met. Technically, the port-a-potty was Jules and Bentley's second meet.
*About a month after my hubs and I started dating, there was a huge ice storm and a tree fell on my house. When I was at work, he surprised me and came over to cut it off! And that led to one of the final scenes in Everybody's After Love.
*I love all things sweet just like Jules! And I also despise coconut.
*My hubs did help me make a mosaic mirror thing for some friends' of ours wedding.
It's always nerve wracking to put your work out there. What will the public think about it? How will they react? But more importantly, what will the people that know me think? Well, no worries, my sister and my one friend will text/tweet me as they're reading. Sometimes I smile and other times, I'm like OMG-I never even thought about that while writing!

I didn't even think twice before answering, "Sure, ask away."
"Are you here with me out of pity, or are you okay being with a fucked-up guy like me?" he asked quietly.
To say I was stunned would've been an understatement. I moved towards him and laid my hands against his folded arms. The current which seemed to connect us sizzled in the cool air. He needed the truth. "I'm not here out of pity, nor are you a fucked-up anything. You’re hurting, lost and in need of a friend. Despite how angry I was at Jude and Anne’s interference, I think they might have been right about one thing. It seems I'm the perfect person."
He closed his eyes and laid his head back against the wall. "I am fucked-up, Beth. I can't seem to stay on a straight path anymore. One day I can see some daylight at the end of the tunnel, and then the next day, the world seems so dark and gray again."
"William, it's completely understandable. When my parents divorced, I was all over the place for months, hell, years actually. For a child, being unable to understand what was happening or why everything had to change, God, I thought I was going crazy. I wish I’d had someone to help me through those times. Maybe I wouldn't be the fucked-up woman I am now." Honesty in this case, seemed as though it would be the best policy.
"But I'm not a child, Beth. I'm a grown man who should be able to handle this better," William said, looking down at me and I could see the torment in his eyes. "I'm so screwed up."
"You're not screwed up. You're suffering through one of the most terrible things which could happen to anyone. You lost your wife so suddenly, and you were left with a tiny baby who needs you to be strong all time for her. My God, I’m sure if I was in a similar situation, I would be a blubbering mess of goo. I'm so impressed by your strength," I argued. "You’re a strong man, you have a lot going on, but you're working through it, you work hard every day to provide for your baby girl."
"I don't know how to do this. How do I make sure Angel doesn't turn into me?" William asked, tears falling freely down his face.
I reached up, laying a hand on his cheek and wiped the tears away with my thumb. "Let me help, I'll try to help you figure out what I wish someone had taught me."
William covered my hand with his. "Why, Beth? Why would you commit yourself to doing this for a complete stranger?"
I thought about the answer for a moment. Why was I doing this? Was I truly interested in William, the idea of saving him, or was I doing this out of a need to help someone I saw as a friend? I decided again to be honest.
"I don't know, William. I've seen you light up when you look at that beautiful little girl of yours, and I know you deserve to be happy. I want the sparkle in your eyes to shine for the whole world. I want to see it sparkle every single day."
William let his arms drop to his sides. "I don't know if it's possible. It won't be fair to you, not if I can't be helped."
"Let me decide what I consider fair. For now, let's just take it one day at a time. Let me be a friend and help bring you back to life," I suggested.
Before I even had time to consider what I was doing, I pressed my body against his, wrapping my arms tightly around his waist. It felt so right, as if I molded against him perfectly. Once more I berated myself as a fraud. I wanted to help a friend, but my physical attraction for William was hoping for more. The question of whether this was a good idea spun around inside my head once again.
William wrapped his arms around me, holding on as if I was a beacon of light in a storm. "Maybe I can bring you back to life in return," he whispered against the top of my head.

Keeping It Real: Christmas Story HELP!
Okay, today's Keeping It Real is a cry for HELP! So far, my biggest success has been with The Right Pitch because it's a part of a boxed set. Moving forward, I'm thinking I should probably try to be involved in at least one-two boxed sets/year so that I can make some money on this whole book writing escapade and keep at it. For 2015, I have two opportunities for boxed sets for far.
The first being a sports novella that will be due out sometime in June. At this time (and it's subject to change), but I think the hero will be Benny Martinez from The Right Pitch. I haven't worked out all of his storyline, but I've got an idea or two floating around in my head. I'll keep you posted.
Now, the other set is a Christmas themed set with a pet involved. Oh, and it has to be sweetsy (I think), meaning no sex on scene. :-/ So let's focus on what this story should involve. A pet. Well, I'm a dog lover but that seems kind of generic. No cats, sorry, or goldfish. Definitely no reptiles, so maybe a dog it is. Perhaps a stray? A dog at the pound that needs a home? I don't know, let's figure that out together.
The other part is WHO are these Christmas themed characters??? I'm thinking they have to know each other since the book has to be centered around Christmas time. Exes? Former crushes? Neighbors? HELP!!!
