An Introvert’s Guide to Mental Health During the Holidays

Thanksgiving is in the rearview, but for introverts (and my fellow extroverted introverts), the chaotic holiday season is just beginning. Invites to work events, friends’ parties, and family dinners are slowly cluttering our inboxes, and sometimes our mental health doesn’t want to hit RSVP. But never fear because therapists are here!

I called up Eidit Choochage, a licensed therapist and life coach who specializes in anxiety, for help, so here’s her advice on how to brace for the oncoming onslaught of eggnog and ugly sweaters, and protect your mental health during the holidays. (Disclaimer: Eidit is also my personal life coach, but our discussion was strictly an interview on general mental health tips for the holiday season.)

1. Acknowledge that it’s normal to feel stressed.

The holidays put a strain on everything, so not feeling cheery 24/7 is totally expected. “The holidays are difficult for a majority of people, especially folks who might experience social anxiety or lean towards being an introvert,” Eidit says. “It’s a marathon of events between work, family, and friends. And if you’re in a relationship, you have your partner’s family, friends, and work events.”

All that busyness takes a toll on our mental health, which is why a 2019 study found that 88% of Americans consider this to be the most stressful time of the year. It’s not just you, and you’re not the only one that thinks It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas should be renamed to It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Stress Sweats.

2. Say no to events that aren’t a priority.

It’s difficult to get out of your family’s holiday dinner, but your neighbor’s cookie swap? Easy. As invites roll your way, set some boundaries for your schedule so your calendar doesn’t get dangerously crowded. “If an event is going to add more stress on top of the family and the friends, then just decline it,” Eidit suggests. “We think people are going to be so mad at us if we don’t go, but more people are understanding that others are prioritizing their mental health.”

If you’re saying no to someone on your periphery, an explanation isn’t always necessary. Although, if it’s a friend whose feelings could be hurt by the response, Eidit recommends saying something along the lines of, “Hey, I’m really pacing myself this holiday season to take care of myself, so, unfortunately, I won’t be able to make this event.” You can always top off the explanation with an invitation to reconnect in the new year when you’re more available.

3. Schedule extra self-care time.

Once you’ve cleared up space in your schedule, pop in some extra me-time. If you enjoy a long bath once a week, add an extra sesh before your friend’s Hanukkah party. Is binge-watching TV more your speed? Save the weekly episode till the night after an event so you have a destressing activity ready to go. Like Eidit says, this season is a marathon, so making sure there are some water stations along the way in the form of hot yoga or a cool swim is essential. (Personally, Eidit is a fan of the Calm app and says throwing on a free 5-minute video helps ground her before an outing.)

4. Give yourself an out.

Okay, so you’ve meditated, and now you’re getting ready for the big, cookie-filled night. If you still can’t find that party spirit, only commit yourself to part of the evening. Eidit says, “Sometimes when we think about going to the gym, it’s enough to say we’re just going for 10 minutes. Then once they’re actually there, people tend to stay longer. In the same way, just tell yourself that you’ll go for one hour. Giving yourself that mental permission to leave at any point can be enough of a motivator to go.”

If you hit that hour and actually warmed up to the setting, stay as long as your little heart can take it (or at least until Mariah Carey comes on). If you didn’t have a ball, Eidit says getting the negative energy out of your body through movement can help you wind down. Go for a walk or follow a stretching video, then you can also soothe your mind with a “soul-care” activity like journaling. “You’re taking care of your nervous system by doing things that feel safe to you. I definitely encourage some type of movement or breathwork coupled with your favorite things like a hot shower or face mask,” she says.

i will not engage schitt's creek moira mental health during the holidays5. If drama starts, don’t participate.

If your major concern is clashing with friends or family, the most important thing to remember is that while you can’t control other people’s actions, you can control how you respond to them. We all have that aunt or colleague that just loves to get under our skin, but it’s not our job to feed into their toxicity. As Eidit reminds us, “We’re giving that person all the power by engaging in that back-and-forth. Just say, ‘I’m not in the mood to talk about that right now’ until they drop it.”

Another of Eidit’s tips is to imagine an invisible bubble around you, then visualize their comments bouncing off without ever reaching you. You can also take a few minutes outside to practice some breathwork and get out of that heated headspace. “You’re setting boundaries and teaching people how to treat you,” she explains. “That takes more emotional energy, but if you’re going to be in that space anyway, shutting it down then and there is going to protect your energy.”

Introverts, do what you need to protect your mental health during the holidays.

Hopefully these tips help to not just survive the holiday season, but to fully enjoy it. Protecting your mental health during the holidays is key to being present and making the most of your time with family and friends, especially if you are more of an introvert. So, set those boundaries and give yourself a little extra love.

Let’s Make a Christmas Tree Charcuterie Board

Trader Joe’s hooked us up again! This time, with a Christmas Tree Charcuterie Board so gorgeous, it’s sure to be the focal point of your holiday party. The only downside is, it might not last long when everyone gathers around to chat and snack at the tasty assortment of meats, cheeses and other snacks.

All of the ingredients for this board can be found in one trip to Trader Joe’s, but Don’t worry if you don’t have a TJ’s near you—moving nearby one mayyy be tempting, but not necessary—you can find similar ingredients at another store and follow along with the assembly of this cute as can be charcuterie tree for your next holiday party.

christmas charcuterie tree blogilates made with trader joe's products

What is charcuterie anyway?

Let’s get technical juuust for a sec before we get to the fun stuff. Charcuterie is a French tradition of “preparing and assembling cured meats and meat products. Charcuterie-style meat and cheese boards have become very popular outside of France, and the idea of charcuterie has evolved to include many foods besides meat. Today, it’s common for a charcuterie board to contain an assortment of cheeses, artisan bread, olives, fruit, and nuts.”

Anything goes!

The most fun part about assembling a charcuterie board is that you really can’t mess it up. You can pair sweet and savory, meats and cheeses, and even sprinkle in some chocolate and nuts, if you so choose.

The assembly is the most fun part! I went with a holiday tree theme, but as long as you have a large board and enough colors, textures and variety, yours is sure to be a show-stopper at your next party!

Our charcuterie board picks

Like I mentioned before, everything here is actually from Trader Joe’s! They sell a package of assorted meats labeled specifically for charcuterie (makes things soo easy). This board features savory, tangy and sweet items, most of which were selected to be not as conventional as most of the boards we see out there filled with meat, cheese and olives.

It seemed a bit more festive and fun to go with some sweet items for the holidays, especially for any parties where kids are invited.

Be sure to buy an assortment of delicious crackers or crostini, a few different meat selections, and a couple good cheeses. TJ’s cranberry chevre and white stilton with cranberries are absolutely delicious and add a hint of tang and sweetness, which pair nicely with the meats.

Assemble your Christmas Tree Charcuterie Board

Grab the following items and assemble in order starting at the bottom for the tree trunks. With each layer, get a bit smaller and thinner so that it becomes a triangle “tree.”

The meats come in a circular shape so it’s easy to pinch the bottoms and create small flower shapes for an adorable presentation.

15 Gifts for the Mom Who Says She Doesn’t Want Anything

*This post may contain referral links for products we love, and all opinions are our own. Blogilates.com earns a small commission from these links, at no additional cost to you.

blogilates gift guide gifts for mom who has everything

The holiday season is in full swing—and as usual, arrived here faster than we expected (or so it seems)! This means…shopping, shopping, more shopping…and sipping (wine, of course, to get through those stressful moments, although we do prefer a good workout!)

Here’s a gift idea round-up to help you out with the person who deserves the most, but isn’t always the easiest to shop for – mom!

1. A gift she’ll cherish all year

Artifact Uprising Desktop Photo Calendar – $35

Two things basically all moms love: photos and a way to organize upcoming events. This walnut desktop calendar by Artifact Uprising does both beautifully. Use photos recapping the year, cute pics of her grandkids, memories from a special trip, or classic oldies that you both love. Whatever you decide to use, your mom will cherish this gift all year.

2. Something to cozy up with

saatva diamond blanket gifts for mom who doesn't want anything blogilates gift guideSaatva Diamond Knit Blanket – Starting at $165

Wintertime is synonymous with snuggling up on the couch or bed with a lightweight knit blanket. Bonus points if it’s made from 100% cotton.

Literally every time you wash this hypoallergenic blanket, it gets softer and softer. It can be used underneath a duvet cover, as a blanket to lay at the foot of your bed, or as a comforter alternative. This isn’t just your average run-of-the-mill blankie—it’s bound in a sturdy cotton twill, giving it a touch of elegance, so it looks nice when neatly folded up on the sofa when not wrapped all around your body.

3. Kicks for kicks

woolloomooloo belmont shoes gifts for mom who doesn't want anything

Woolloomooloo Belmont Shoe – $150

If you prefer casual, everyday shoes that aren’t clunky, cumbersome, and rubber-dominated sneakers, you’ll jump high for these super comfortable no-socks-needed kicks. Made with 100% Merino Wool, making them super comfortable, lightweight, and breathable, these shoes are the epitome of looking good while feeling good.

Great for your travels through airports and on daily errands, these will be your “chilling out” shoes of choice when not working out, or when your feet need a break from traditional athletic shoes.

4. Luscious Lip Balm vacation lip balm gifts for mom blogilates gift guide

Vacation Lip Trips Desserts – $25

Do you ever feel like your lip balm—and I bet you’ve tried many over the years–actually dries your lips out instead of making them pillowy-plush and dewey? Yeah, me too.

There’s finally a collection of balms on the market that taste good enough to eat (but don’t!) AND leave your lips super soft and hydrated. These five, dessert-inspired balms have a very gentle, subtle scent that isn’t overpowering and an SPF 30 for sun protection, which is crucial even in the winter.

It’s also vegan, cruelty-free, glides on smoothly without clumping, and doesn’t contain any icky chemicals.

5. A replacement for her old school iron

nori press clothes steamer gifts for mom who doesn't want anything

Nori Press – $120

I can’t ever figure out why my clothes wrinkle easily even when I hang them up. An old-school iron is so clunky I don’t even want to bother with it, plus it always leaks.

This steamer has been a fashion lifesaver and saves me a trip to the professionals. Plus, it’s so easy to transport. It presses, steams, and refreshes clothes for the whole family, and you don’t have to whip out an annoying ironing board. It has six different heating settings for all sorts of fabrics, automatic safety shut-off when not in use, and two aluminum plates to iron both front and back at the same time. Game changer.

6. A huggable hoodie

popflex zip cloud hoodie heather grey gifts for mom blogilates gift guide

POPFLEX Cloud Hoodie – $70

Everyone needs a sweatshirt they wear so often it starts looking strange if they’re NOT wearing it. Also, as fun as it is to dress up and head out, there’s nothing like vegging out in comfy sweats.

Described by a fan as “baggy in all the right places,” this super oversized zip-front jacket with pockets feels like a warm hug on a cold day. From POPFLEX, it comes in plenty of shades, and even the hood part is extra large. This one sells out often, so grab it before it goes fast.

7.  An at-home facial tool

skin gym facial steamer pink gifts for mom who doesn't want anything

SkinGym VODA Facial Steamer$60

There are three types of people in this world: those who love facials, those who don’t, and those who love them but use a facial steamer at home in-between professional visits to clear out their pores, as well as their sinuses.

Facial steamers keep skin glowing, moisturized, super clean–and honestly, when used properly (as in, don’t get TOO close), the steam feels amazing on the face. This spa-quality one from VODA opens pores and leaves your skin feeling baby-bum soft.

8. Some TLC for winter skin

the body shop pine and divide gift set blogilates gift guide for mom

The Body Shop Wild Pine Gift Set – $26

This set from The Body Shop features three winter skin essentials: Shower Gel, Body Lotion-to-Oil, and Hand Balm. Each of these treats is vegan, and made with high quality, moisture rich ingredients like Trade shea butter from Ghana. And can we talk about the scent?! The pine essential oil is invigorating and fresh. This festive scent combined with the cute, done-for-you packaging makes this the perfect gift for mom.

9. A stylish and motivating bracelet chelsea charles bracelet gold blogilates gifts for mom or bestie

Chelsea Charles Count Me Healthy Bracelet – $89

It’s hard to find high-quality jewelry you can dress up or down. To me, it feels like most accessories look low quality or just don’t “go” with the casual vibe of your clothing. This Count Me Healthy Bracelet Collection by designer Chelsea Charles caught my eye because the bracelets look solid, trendy, and go with all of your mom’s favorite outfits.

Selena Gomez is a fan of this brand, and each bead on the wristlet represents a different personal goal you set for yourself, such as walking every day to getting 8 hours of sleep per night. The beads stay in place until you move them yourself. Set healthy goals, get inspired, and look fab!

10. Earbuds that actually stay in

raycon earbuds pink

Raycon Earbuds – $90

On flights or road trips, when listening to podcasts, music or eBooks, do you ever start fidgeting with your earbuds because they just aren’t very comfortable? Yeah, me too. If you aren’t into bulky headphones, and really want buds that fit into both your pocket and your travel tote try these everyday Raycon earbuds that come in a variety of colors.

Designed to never fall out, these mini speakers pack a lot of punch and deliver crisp, powerful sound. Water resistant, they come with 3 sound profiles and a long-lasting battery life of more than 30 hours.

11. Something to freshen up her home gym

blogilates x target gold weight rack

Blogilates Dumbbells – Starting at $15

I confess: Working out can be a real pain sometimes. It’s hard to find motivation to get up and just DO it, especially when you just want to lounge on the couch and binge Netflix in the cold weather. You can make that motivation a LOT easier with some kick-ass dumbbells you can’t find anywhere but at Target thanks to Blogilates’ exclusive workout gear and accessories collection.

These gold-toned weights are so darn cool your mom will smile when you see and use them because the traditional black gym ones are so boring. Sturdy, long-lasting, and awesome for upper and lower body toning, these hands weights (available in 3, 5, 8, 10 and 15 lbs) make working out—dare I say it?—freakin’ FUN.

12. The hair tool she didn’t know she needed

hair detangling brush gifts for mom

Hair Detangling Brush – $12

Hair is notoriously knotty for moms, especially in the back. Chances are she’s a) tossing it up in a messy bun using cheapy rubber bands b) sleeping on a cotton instead of silk pillowcase and c) not using enough or the proper conditioner when washing her tresses. Thankfully, there’s a brush combo on the market that combs out all those gnarly knots in your hair, which can also be caused by sweat and stress.

It works on all hair types including thin, curly, afro, and fine, can also be used on kids, and leaves hair tangle-free, healthier, and smooth. Great on wet or dry hair, the brush unravels your knots instead of tugging at them. This brush and comb set from Lily England sells out fast, so buy it ASAP; available in a variety of colors.

13. The ultimate travel set cure hydration travel essentials gifts guide

Cure Travel Essentials Bundle$50

When traveling for the holidays, mom will need some additional hydration to arrive at her destination feeling recharged, refreshed, and rejuvenated—especially her skin. Of course, drinking water is a must, but if she’s the type that can’t stand water and need a little kick in hers, pour some electrolyte mixes into your water for an extra boost of TLC. (And yes, electrolytes also curbs hangovers.) This on-the-go set from CURE contains four electrolyte mix flavors: Berry Pomegranate, Orange, Lime, and Watermelon Electrolyte, as well as a cute travel case, satin eye mask, peppermint gum, and more.

14. The perfect kitchen towels thyme and sage kitchen towels gifts for mom

Thyme & Sage Kitchen Towel Set – $36

There’s just something about the perfect kitchen towel – and moms know the struggle to find one. This set by Thyme & Sage comes with three towels, and each one has a specific purpose. One is designed for cleaning messes, one is tasks like covering rising dough and ringing out spinach. The third is “The multitasker,” designed to sling over your shoulder and use for everything else. Not only is this trio of towels genius, but they’re also super cute.

15. The experience of audiobooks audible gift subscription

Audible Gift Subscription – Starting at $15

This gift for moms who don’t want anything is kind of like thousands of gifts in one. With a gift membership (ranging from one to twelve months), your mom will have access to Audible’s expansive catalogue of audiobooks, podcasts, and more. You can also gift individual books if you have something specific in mind.

That wraps up our picks for gifts for mom who doesn’t want anything

Hopefully this list helps you find something special! If you have any other go-to gift ideas for moms, let me know in the comments!

The Dream Grant: Giving back to you, after you’ve given me so much

Hey guys!

I’ve never done anything this big before, but I’ve also never experienced growth as explosive as I did this year – for me as a designer and entrepreneur and for POPFLEX as a brand and company.

The fact that you choose to spend your hard earned dollars on POPFLEX means so much to me…especially when there are way bigger brands with stores that you could just walk into! But somehow you chose to give me a chance. You chose to trust me. You believed in me and because of that, I get to live out my dream every single day.

You made my dreams come true, and now I want to make yours come true too.

This year for #GivingTuesday, I am giving back to YOU.

I set aside $20,000 to create a Dream Grant, with the purpose of helping you realize a dream in an area of self improvement where you currently don’t feel supported.

A lot of times dreams get crushed because your friends and family don’t believe in you or sometimes it’s just impossible to get a good idea off the ground because you don’t have that financial kickstart to get things going.

I get it. I know exactly what it feels like to want something so bad and to not have a single person support you. So let me be that person for you.

I am opening up applications for the Dream Grant today!

A Lululemon Shoe Review, After Hundreds of Miles of Testing

Welcome to my Lululemon shoe review where we will be reviewing the Chargefeel Low and the Blissfeel!

I’ve been testing 2 pairs of Lululemon shoes for hundreds of miles. Spoiler alert: I loved one, and the other… not so much.

lululemon running shoe review blissfeel chargefeel low

A journey to find THE running shoe

I was 8 years old when I lined up at my first starting line, ready to race the Catalina Marathon’s Kid’s Mile (my mom was running the marathon but never mind that, this is about ME).

Strapped on my feet? My beloved red, white and sparkle Skechers platform sneakers, complete with a rhinestone heart shoe charm – the epitome of 2000’s style. Were they the most practical choice? No, but in the name of fashion they became my very first pair of running shoes.

red and white athletic platform shoes

As a lifelong runner, I longed for a stylish pair of running shoes like that first pair. Womens running shoes have always been very either or for me. They are either absolutely boring looking or very neon or have neon POPS of color – not my style.

My heart aches everytime I shell out cash to purchase another pair of ugly, but functional and supportive womens running shoes. I completed my first marathon this past summer in a great shoe… that was just not a cute shoe. I’d be lying if I said the lack of fusion between fashion and function doesn’t bother me. I am in a creative field – the aesthetics, they get to me.

I *gasped* when I saw Lululemon’s running shoe marketing

Was this what I had been waiting for? Lulu shoes?

I was first intrigued by the beautiful tones and sleek silhouette. Could this shoe be the answer to combining fashion and function? Would they be as good as my highly tested pair of go-to running shoes?

It’s hard to make that leap and try a different shoe when running shoes come at a high price point, especially after 20 years of caring for legs that have logged many miles. But the pull was too strong, they had to be put to the test.

lululemon shoe review running gif

First up, The Lululemon Chargefeel Low

Designed to be an everyday running shoe and training shoe, the Chargefeel “delivers the bounce you need for running and the agile support you need for training.”

lululemon chargefeel low in sage running shoe review

Pros: Love the available colorways

How cute is that sage green colorway? I love how many neutral and cute tones these shoes were offered in! Easy to wear anywhere.

Cons: Many

Lacked support, lots of ground feel, little stride return, slippery laces

Half a mile into my first run, I turned to my husband and said “mmmm I don’t like these.” I was determined to give them an adequate chance, so I continued testing.

Running long distances in these felt like running in a shoe that was at the end of its life cycle. Every step was difficult, I felt little to no bounce in each step. When you’re on a long run, it’s amazing to feel your shoe working with you and these guys, they were working against me. When your legs are absolutely fried and you have half a mile left – that little bounce return makes all the difference.

These left me with tight calves, aching arches and heel pain that lasted through the day and into the next run. These are feelings I have when I’ve logged 300 miles in a shoe – feelings I do not expect in a brand new shoe. I even tried adding in some extra arch support which helped a bit, but not enough – the pain and lack of bounce prevailed.

I could not wait to reach that 100 mile testing period I had allotted myself so I could change out of these shoes. It actually took quite a while to make it through 100 miles because I kept switching back to my regular shoes in an attempt to spare my calves.

Where is that bounce, where’s the stride return, where’s the padding 👀 Chargefeel?!

Chargefeel Low takeaways

I would consider the Chargefeel for something less high impact than running looong distances. I never took these shoes on a run longer than 6 miles because I was worried about how my arches and calves would suffer.
If you are considering switching from your regular running shoe to these, don’t. They are very cute though so I am excited to have them – I will just be running errands in them, not miles 🙂

The Lululemon Blissfeel

After running in the Chargefeel, I was feeling quite skeptical about trying another Lululemon shoe. Lulu describes the Blissfeel as the everyday running shoe, specifically designed with a women’s foot in mind.

lululemon blissfeel running shoe review

Pros: Highly supportive, so cute

These have exceeded my every expectation. THESE. These were what I was hoping for in the Chargefeel.

Functionality wise, the Blissfeel an excellent shoe. They are supportive, cushiony, and SO CUTE. My legs feel that bounce and return I felt the other lacked. My calves were not overly tight from lack of support. My feet felt enveloped in a cushion-y cute little package. Everytime I put them on – I was not only excited for another run in them, but was just so thrilled about how cute they are.

Over the testing period, I began to trust Lululemon shoes again. I could feel the shoes working with me, supporting every step, giving back that subtle bounce return I love so much. They carried me through many, many miles. I soared past my 100 mile text mark and am currently approaching the 300 mile mark.

Aesthetically – they are so cute! Definitely stylish, easy to wear on a run but also easy to wear in everyday life. I do wish my pair were a bit more subtle – the bright purple is a touch too much for me.

Cons: Not as many muted colors, slippery laces

The Blissfeels are still so aesthetic compared to the well known styles I’ve grown up with – but quite a few colorways are those neons I am so used to seeing. There are definitely some good more muted options though.

Something quite interesting but not a major red flag for me – both styles of Lulu shoes had really slippery laces. Just double knot them tight, and you’re FINE.

Blissfeel takeaways

I smiled every time I looked down at them. My heart felt full knowing that there on my feet was what I had been looking for since that Catalina Kid’s Marathon. My quest for the perfect running shoe has come to an end ❤
I actually already have my next pair of Blissfeels waiting in the rafters for their turn to hit the pavement. The next pair of shoes to carry me that 26.2 will undoubtedly be Lululemon’s Blissfeels.

If you are also looking for the perfect fusion of fashion and function in a women’s running shoe – THESE ARE WORTH IT.
