AWESOMER!

I was so busy plugging my contribution in the Syncopated Anthology, I forgot to mention that my art was featured in yet another anthology that debuted this past weekend at MoCCA, Awesome 2: AWESOMER!

Just like the first Awesome anthology, this is a collection of new comics edited by Charlito and Mr. Phil of the Indie Spinner Rack podcast. All proceeds of the book after printing costs go towards a scholarship for a student at CCS (last time it went to the well-deserving Chuck McBuck!)

The list o

MoCCA 2009!

MoCCA weekend started off with pretty much the biggest bummer EVER. I was riding the train from Vermont down to New York City when I got a call from Aaron, who informed me that Nickelodeon Magazine had been canceled. Even with ONE MILLION subscribers and a readership somewhere around SIX MILLION KIDS, the magazine folded.

This sucks a little bit for me, and lots of other indie comics artists who have been lucky enough to contribute to Nickelodeon Magazine over the years. This sucks A LOT fo

Syncopated! MoCCA!

As I suspect most of you know, the MoCCA Arts Fest is this weekend in New York City. I will be tabling with my good friend Greg Means, who will be debuting issue TEN of his ignatz award winning comics anthology Papercutter.

I won't have a new minicomic (unless you count Phase 7 #014), but I WILL have a new 12-page comic in Syncopated, an anthology of non-fiction comics! My contribution is all about Dr. August Dvorak. It's basically all of the cool stories and extra information about Dr. D (and

A Decade of alec-longstreth.com!

Last week the StarWars.com blog had an article all about how Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace came out ten years ago this month, on May 19th. As many of you know, that movie was a pretty big deal for me. It was definitely an "anchor" in my life - a big moment that I use to remember everything else that was going on around then. FOR INSTANCE, "Oh yeah, I started my website a few months after Episode I came out!"

If memory serves, this website was actually PHASE 3 of the original list

Pop's 90th

Have you ever seen that movie Knocked Up? Well, there is this one scene where this guy Martin agrees to a bet, in which his friends will pay his rent if Martin can grow his beard for one year. The catch is, for the rest of the movie, all of Martin's friends ruthlessly make fun of his beard.

This is basically what it was like for me, being around my mother this weekend at my grandfather's 90th birthday party. She never missed an opportunity to let her displeasure be known, at least not when I

Graduation 2009

Well, last Saturday was the graduation ceremony for The Center for Cartoon Studies. My fellow Fellow, Chris and I got to sit up on stage with the seniors, and I even got to introduce Jeff Smith, who was the commencement speaker. It was a nice little ceremony, 35 minutes door to door, with a reception afterwards at the CCS gallery, where all the seniors have pages from their thesis projects up on the walls.

It is pretty strange to think that these students will be leaving and a whole new batch

7-Days, NY Daily News, CBR

Most major cities have an alternative weekly paper, for instance The Stranger in Seattle. Well, the entire state of Vermont has its own weekly paper, called 7-Days and every week they run a full-page comic by a student or alumni from CCS. This week, they are running a special two-page spread to announce CCS's graduation ceremony and that Jeff Smith is the commencement speaker. There are links to both pages of the comic here if people want to check them out!

The comic was written and laid out

TCAF 2009!

BAM! I'm back from my first ever trip to Toronto! TCAF was in an awesome space this year (as you can see in this photo by MK Reed), it was well attended despite some rain, and all of the staff were super friendly and helpful. Toronto itself was really cool too!

I once again relied on my shutterbug friends to document the trip. Check out the following Flickr sets to get some idea of what I was up to this weekend:
Joe's photos
Greg's photos
MK's photos

There are some great photos in there,

Myspace Dark Horse Presents!

Hey, remember when I was talking about that creative breakthrough I had? Well, you can catch the first glimpse of it, in the form of a new 8-page, full color comic, over at Dark Horse's Myspace page.

This is one of many stories that I'm hoping to do in a new fantasy world I'm calling "The Isle of Elsi." Little comics stories will probably turn up here and there in various anthologies over the next few years, while I am finishing Basewood. Then Elsi stories will rugularly start appearing in th
