A Secret Garden Plant Library Design
A garden plant library? Yes please! Connect with community by sharing plants with neighbors and build a secret outdoor reading room.
Do you love plants? If so, then you might be interested in building an outdoor garden room that is a plant library. This type of garden room is a great way to showcase your favorite plants, have a private outdoor reading area, and also share plants with friends and neighbors.
What is a Garden Plant Library?Definitively a garden plant library is whatever you want it to be. Do you prefer to have a quiet outdoor patio garden room that functions as a reading lounge? Great. That’s a good start for an outdoor garden library.
Perhaps an outdoor garden plant library is a literal library for plants. Your friends and neighbors can come and take pass-along plants that you have dug from your garden. They can “check out” a plant temporarily or be gifted a plant permanently from the library.
My Garden Plant Library Design incorporates both these ideas into a lovely, shaded, seating area under my favorite patio umbrella. Sit here and enjoy a quiet space to read a book, have a cup of tea or cocktail, or perhaps grab a plant from my pass-a-long collection for your garden.

So you have this fabulous idea for a Garden Plant Library room. How do you decide where to build a library on your own property? A literal plant library, where people might check out plants or donate plants, might be placed out near the border of your property close to a sidewalk.
A private outdoor garden plant library room is great squirreled away in a small quiet corner of your garden. Mine is at the end of my Art Gallery Wellness Garden . There was nothing in the corner but old garden furniture (see before photo). My goal was a beautiful transformation.
Do Your Plants Need Sunshine or Shade?Do you have the types of plants in mind? Consider what type of plants will reside in your garden plant library. You will need to define the sun requirements. If these plants need full sun, then finding a sunny area is best for the garden. If the plants need shade, then finding a shady area is best.
If you choose the garden area first before considering your plant needs, then the plants you place in the library will be dependent on the conditions of that garden area. Side yards are notoriously shade-filled areas. South facing gardens are typically sunny. Plan plants based on the sun exposure for best success.
List of Where to Build an Outdoor Garden Plant LibraryThe first step is to choose the right location for your garden room. It should be in a spot that gets plenty of sunlight and that is sheltered from the wind. You’ll also want to make sure that the area is level and that there is enough space for the garden room and the plants you plan to put in it.

Essential Pieces for a Garden Plant Library Outdoor RoomAll rooms, indoors or outdoors, usually have a purpose. One purpose for a “library” is to build community by sharing books and other media at no cost to the public. This was my personal goal for my little corner outdoor room. I want to share my pass-along plants at no cost with friends and family while enjoying a quiet outdoor reading corner.
With this in mind, you will need to choose the essential pieces for your garden room. Once you’ve chosen a location, it’s time to start planning the layout of your garden room. You’ll need to decide how big you want the room to be, a seating arrangement, how many plant containers you want to put in it, and where you want to put the plants. Shade is also important, so I put up two umbrellas. One covers a bistro table (above) and the other covers the more comfortable seating.
Patio-Reading-Area-and-GardenI began with an attractive seating area beneath a shady umbrella in front of a plant stand. The plant stand holds a bit of art and a whole lot of pass-along plants I dug from my garden. The metal furniture I found second hand, same with the plant stand, throw rug, and random Letter C Art. You do not have to have brand new things to make a nice outdoor room. Creativity is key.
What Pieces Work for an Outdoor Seating AreaFurniture (old or new) for a cozy seat or bistro table for readingUmbrella for shadePlant stand or benches to hold the plantsPlanting containers or elevated beds and soil to hold your pass-along plantsAn outdoor coffee table (for drinks and to hold books or plants)Throw rug, throw pillows, and art (not necessary, but a nice ornamental touch)Pass-along plants (to give away or trade)Build the Garden RoomYou might be thinking that you need to construct this giant crazy patio with all the bells and whistles. This simply is not true. Keep it simple. I already had the patio area, containers, soil, plants, and basic seating.
If you DO want to break ground for a new patio or a deck, this is certainly your choice. If you’re not comfortable building your own, you can always hire a contractor to do it for you. My thought, in keeping it simple, is that you can put this together on your own with very little trouble.
A Plan to Maintain the PlantsOnce the plants are in the garden room, it’s important to care for them properly. This includes watering them regularly, fertilizing them, and pruning them as needed. You may also want to consider adding a irrigation lines around the plants to help retain moisture and keep chores at a minimum..
With a little planning and effort, you can easily build an outdoor garden room that is a plant library. This type of garden room is a great way to showcase your favorite plants. You can invite your community in to share the space and your pass-along plants. It’s also a great place to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature.
Additional Tips for Building an Outdoor Garden Room that is a Plant LibraryUse durable materials that will withstand the elements.Make sure the garden room is well-ventilated to prevent mold and mildew.Consider adding a water feature to help keep the plants – and visitors – humid.Enjoy your new plant library!

Best Garden Gifts for Mom
Garden gifts for Mom are perfect for any time of the year. Celebrating the mothers in our lives is important. If your mom loves to garden, there are a number of gifts that you can give her to show her how much you care. The gift list below are some of my favorite garden gifts for Mom or anyone who loves gardening.
Six of the Best Garden Gifts for Mom1. A Great Tool for the GardenNo gardener is complete without good tools. If your mom’s tools are starting to show their age, or if she’s missing a few essential pieces, consider getting her a new set. Want a really special tool? Choose the CobraHead® Original Weeder & Cultivator Garden Hand Tool. I have loved my Cobrahead tools and consider them an essential in my garden.
Made in the United States by passionate gardeners, the CobraHead® Original Weeder & Cultivator Garden Hand Tool is reasonably priced, easy to grip, and virtually indestructible. I particularly love the blue handle because the color stands out and I kind find the tool easily if I lay it down.
COBRAHEAD ORIGINAL WEEDER – $31.95
2 Irrigation Grids are a Great Garden GiftOne of the smartest things I’ve done is add Garden Grid
Watering Systems to my elevated garden beds. They work on ground gardens as well. I like them because they provide even water at the base of the plants in your garden. SO EASY!
Garden grids are excellent garden gifts for Mom and are a snap to install because they come pre-assembled. Just attach them to your garden hose or existing watering system. I put a timer on my irrigation lines so that I am assured consistent watering.

3 Metal Elevated Beds are Perfect Garden Gifts for MomMetal elevated beds are LONG LASTING and once assembled and filled, very little maintenance. Perfect in tight spaces or for the gardener who needs elevated beds for health purposes. I often get asked do metal raised beds get too hot? I live in Arizona and have absolutely no problem with them and highly recommend these beds (see photos above and below of my gardens).
My Art Gallery Wellness Garden is filled with a dozen elevated beds mixed with annuals, vegetables, and perennials very successfully. The elevated beds are cold-rolled galvanized steel. They are coated with an Aluzinc coating that is food safe. These beds are especially tough and long lasting.

4 Mom Needs a Strong Patio Umbrella
Patio umbrellas make great garden gifts for mom. Why? Ask any gardener and they will testify to the fact that cheap umbrellas are quick to blow apart or fall apart in the weather. I’ve gone through dozens of umbrellas until I found this super strong umbrella that I use on my very windy Arizona patio. I INVESTED in this umbrella because I am so frustrated with umbrellas that do not last.
The Swilt
patio umbrella comes with the unique Swilt Mechanism. This lets you tilt or swivel the umbrella so that you can shade plants or people easily. The umbrella is built from high-grade rustproof aluminum and fiberglass ribs. Because of this, it survives stronger wind conditions and will last you a lifetime.

Books are great garden gifts for mom. There are many great gardening books available that can teach your mom new techniques or inspire her to try new plants. If she’s interested in learning more about a particular type of gardening, such as organic gardening, wellness gardening, or container gardening, then I would be greatly honored if you ordered one of my recent garden books (see above).
My favorite new book of the season is all about hot and dry gardening, Dry Climate Gardening: Growing beautiful, sustainable gardens in low-water conditions. Without a doubt, this is a MUST HAVE BOOK if you live in a dry climate anywhere in the world. Author Noelle Johnson of AZGardenLady fame gives tips on design, maintenance, plants, and soil. The photographs are inspiring and beautiful – truly gorgeous photos that help you better understand design and procedure for planting and successfully growing in dry climates.

Do Metal Raised Beds Get Too Hot?
Do metal raised beds get too hot in the garden? I get asked this question all the time. My gardens are filled with metal elevated garden beds and I love them. Living in Mesa, Arizona means I get the hottest of hot days mid-summer. This is the perfect testing ground for metal raised beds gardening; I have been testing this for several years. In my experience metal raised beds do not get too hot even when exposed to full sun. Overall, the temperature near the edge of the bed wall can get slightly warmer on a hot day. No warmer, however, than planting your plants up against a hot brick wall or similar.
Read on below for tips on growing plants in metal raised beds during hot summers. Learn where you can get all the cool metal bed and art I have in my special artistic side yard garden.

How to Grow Healthy Plants in Metal Garden Beds in the Hot SeasonIt is very easy to grow all kinds of plants in metal raised beds. From vegetables to cactus, gardening with elevated beds offers lots of benefits. The question is – Do metal raised beds get too hot?
Do Metal Raised Beds Get Too Hot?The answer is a resounding NO! Depending on the beds you are using, elevated metal beds do not get too hot. Birdies Raised Beds are the garden beds that I use and I have not had problems with plants burning up and I LIVE IN DESERT ARIZONA. I have found that the beds generate no more heat than if you plan up against a hot brick wall or similar. For several years I’ve been testing this in my Secret Purple Side Yard Garden.
How Much Heat do You Have? What would I plant near a hot concrete wall? Tough annuals, perennials, and shrubs that I know will do well with heat and reflected heat. Across the country that might include annuals such as summer herbs and vegetables, sweet potato vine, lantana, zinnia, marigold, cosmos, and sunflowers.
Perennials might include coreopsis, daylily, blanket flower, blazing star, lavender, or ice plant. Similarly, choose heat loving shrubs to use in elevated beds that are metal. Generally speaking, focus on plants that love hot conditions for the best success.
Use Shade Covers to Protect Metal Raised BedsAnother great idea is to use shade cover. I prefer two different types of shade cover for my gardens. Both are temporary, so you can set up the shade and pull it down as needed.
Patio Umbrellas – I’ve used dozens of patio umbrellas over the years to temporarily shade plants and patio areas where plants reside. What I’ve discovered is that cheap umbrellas get destroyed quickly, particularly with strong wind. My favorite umbrellas are wind resistant and UV protected and worth every penny. I’m using Midtown Umbrellas fiberglass ‘The Swilt’ because the umbrella is resistant to strong winds. It also has a unique swivel and tilt feature that allows me to protect plants in varying positions.Shade Cloth – 30% shade cloth is a fabulous tool for your garden. Cover your plants just before the extremely hot season with a 30% shade cloth. Your plants will still get sun, but it won’t be as harsh. You can fold the product up at the end of the hot season and tuck it in storage.Best Soil for Elevated Garden Beds
It is very important to choose the right soil for the right plants when planting in an elevated garden bed. Cactus, for example, prefer well-draining soil. I usually mix about half potting soil and half pumice or another inert mixing agent such as horticultural grit or vermiculite.
Annual and perennial plants typically like a moisture retentive soil. This is very important in a metal raised bed. Mix one part potting soil, with two parts compost. This could be homemade compost or composted manure. The result will be a rich soil that is moisture retentive.
My soil of choice this season is Gro Well Raised Bed Soil and Nature’s Way Cactus Soil. Both excellent products for potting in garden beds.
Irrigation for Elevated Garden BedsThe true secret to metal raised beds is proper irrigation. When I lived up north I hand watered infrequently. Living in Arizona heat means you need to water containers more regularly. I have invested in a great irrigation system, the Garden Grid
Watering System.
I assembled my Birdies Raised Beds, set the beds in position, then made sure that the irrigation lines were in place before I added the soil or planted the plants. This approach makes it much easier to add irrigation lines without disturbing soil or plantings once they are in the ground. Garden Grid watering is so easy – you can control how much water comes out and how often you water by placing the grid on a timer.
Assembled garden beds.

Fish Sculpture Garden Décor Tips
Fish sculpture garden décor has been a great way to decorate my landscape. Many years ago I met my friend Tyson Weiss, the Maine based artist of my favorite Fish in the Garden sculptures (see photo right). Tyson immerses himself in nature and has a passion for all things fish. His sculpture designs include koi, trout, and salmon. When imagining my Art Gallery Wellness Garden in my side yard here in Arizona, I envisioned whole schools of these fish swimming in my elevated garden beds. They have transformed my idea of garden décor and elevated the beds with a touch of creative class.

Fish Sculpture Garden Décor Placement TipsGarden décor of all kinds can add a touch of personality and style to your outdoor space. Be careful. It can look cluttered and out of place. I am in danger of having TOO MUCH in this garden. Yet the beauty of the fish sculpture garden décor in my Art Gallery Wellness Garden is that there is an abundance of fish.
Place an item. If your design feels as if it is too much, it can easily be moved and placed somewhere else. Fish sculpture garden décor is super creative and appealing.
Fish in the Garden by Tyson Weiss$50.00Shop nowTips for Placing Garden Décor in Your Garden SpaceConsider the size and scale of your fish sculpture garden décor. Some pieces of garden décor, like statues and birdbaths, can be quite large. There are several different sizes of fish sculpture. Make sure you have enough space to accommodate the fish. Plan well.Think about the flow of your garden. Think about how people will move through the garden space. It is important for garden décor. You don’t want anything to be in the way of walkways or pathways. I like the fish swimming in elevated beds and containers. They look good swimming among perennials as well.Group fish or similar items together. This will help to create visual interest and make your garden look more cohesive. Fish swim in schools. Odd numbers work best when using the fish sculpture garden décor. It looks good when there is more than one fish swimming together. Think of how you might place wall hangings; in odd numbers of 3, 5, or 7.Don’t be afraid to experiment. The best way to find the perfect placement for your fish sculpture garden décor is to experiment. Try different things and see what looks best. Also be mindful of irrigation lines and where they might be under the soil. My Garden in Minutes Garden Grid
Watering Systems lines are just below the surface. I am careful where the fish poles will be placed.

Additional tips for Placing All Types of Garden DécorCreate focal points in your garden. It could be a birdbath, a statue, a large tree, or the fish sculpture garden décor.Add contrast to your yard. Use different colors, textures, or materials. I have used a LOT of color in my garden. There is even color in the umbrellas I have in the seating area at the end of the garden. The surprise about these umbrellas is that they are extra strong and survive heavy winds – ornamental décor and useful as well.Create a sense of privacy. This could be done by planting hedges or using screens. As an enclosed side yard, I already have plenty of privacy in my garden.Generate a touch of whimsy in your yard with garden décor. Fish are unique additions. You can use birdhouses, gnomes, or other fun items too. They truly capture visitors hearts and generate interest in the elevated beds. With a little planning and effort, you can easily create a beautiful and inviting garden with fish sculpture garden décor.

Citrus Asian Salad Shish-ka-Bob Recipe
This Citrus Asian Salad Shish-ka-Bob recipe is a delicious and easy way to use up leftover rotisserie chicken. The chicken is skewered with vegetables and tossed in a flavorful Citrus Asian Salad dressing. The soy-free dressing is definitely the star of the dish, making for a healthy and quick to prepare meal.
Vegetables Add Flavor and Texture
The vegetables in this recipe add a lot of flavor and texture. Choose what vegetables you love. I love cherry tomatoes and cucumber. Tomatoes are delicious in this recipe. This red fruit is a super food, so the toms can really add a healthy punch.
Of course, crunch is important. Red and green bell peppers add a sweetness and a crunch, while the cucumber adds a refreshing coolness to the citrus asian salad. An onion adds a bit of bite, and the cilantro adds a bright and herbaceous flavor.
How to Get the Most Meat from a Rotisserie ChickenOne of the challenging things in life is having a busy life and feeling frustrated at how long it takes to cook dinner and snacks. I have found a solution. I buy rotisserie chickens and pull the pre-cooked meat off to use for other meals and snacks; it saves all the chicken cooking time. If you have leftover turkey or roasted chicken from a previous meal (see above), that works as well.
Some rotisserie chickens are less than $5.00. Because the chicken is already cooked it is less expensive to purchase than a raw chicken. I bring the cooked chicken home, remove all the meat, then divide it up and store it in the refrigerator or freezer in meal-sized portions.
Citrus Asian Salad Dressing is the Star of the RecipeThe citrus Asian salad dressing is what really brings this dish together. It’s a simple dressing made with citrus juice, vinegar, ginger, garlic, black pepper, and citrus zest. The citrus and vinegar adds a tartness, the ginger adds a warmth, the garlic adds a rich flavor, and the black pepper adds a bit of heat.
The dressing is the perfect complement to the chicken and vegetables. It helps to bring out all of the flavors in the dish and it makes the kabobs extra delicious.

What Materials and Art Works for an Outdoor Art Gallery? When creating an art gallery side yard garden, it is important to have an understanding of what type of art works outdoors. In my experience, the goal is to find items that are as weather-proof as possible. I live in Arizona, where the heat is blaring, the monsoons are drowning, and dry rot from the sun is a common concern. The art items I’m using have also survived my time in a Chicagoland garden with cold winters and lots of wet.
Durability is the #1 goal. My favorite durable art gallery items for these extreme conditions in my gardens are the outdoor all weather canvas art hanging on the walls and the sculptural Fish in the Garden by Tyson Weiss (see in the photo below right).
List of Durable Outdoor Art Materials that Survive Summer and Winter ConditionsWater proof ceramic, glass, polyethylene, or terracotta containers and statuesMetal elevated beds or containers or metal that has been cast, recycled, or pre-shaped formStone sculptures, rock, seashells or drift woodWaterproof canvas art – note that regular canvas art will not work long term. Canvas art will only last a short while unless it is waterproof and UV resistantThe list of art materials is endless, but I’d stick with items you know will stand the test of time in extreme conditions (snow/cold and sun/heat). Durable materials are best because they last the longest. Always be concerned about safety and use items that will not harm you or the environment.
Should You Use Plastic? While plastic sculpture and containers can be fine to use for a few years, I have found that plastic sometimes fades in color or breaks apart with heavy duty use in both extreme cold and extreme heat situations. Plastics can have BPA and other toxicity issues as well. Therefore, make sure that all plastic pieces you get are protected from UV light or are guaranteed by the manufacturer as strong outdoor use items. Most importantly, make sure the items you use in your garden that grow with the plants are food safe at every opportunity.
How to Choose Color in Garden DesignLots of people have color opinions. I once saw two garden professional nearly come to blows over martinis while discussing garden design colors. Why? Because it is like your favorite coffee set up; every one has their own way of combining sugar (or not) or adding cream (or not). This is true of color theory as well. We all have our favorite combinations, so the rule I prefer is not to sweat the details and simply choose the colors that make you feel the best.
Color Wheels Help VisualizationStart with a color wheel. Above you can see a very basic color wheel which shows you where warm colors and cool colors are in relationship to one another. For a more matching color experience we might choose colors on the same side of the wheel. They meld together harmoniously. For a more exciting color experience we might choose colors that are opposite one another. Opposite colors contrast.
Finished wall with paintings and elevated beds planted. The Color Rule that WorksIn my home here in Arizona, my primary decorative colors are terracotta orange and cactus green, with a strong mix of contrasting blue and purple dropped in here and there. I took that indoor theme and brought it outdoors to the side yard.
Bring the Indoor Color OutdoorsYou see terracotta orange rocks, umbrellas, and walk way. The deep orange is set off by green elevated garden beds. The art I’ve installed brings in these colors then has pops of purple, blue, and yellow. At first glance you don’t notice the “color theme”, but as you look closer, you can see patterns emerge.
There are no hard and fast color rules. In my opinion it is whatever your heart desires. Find the colors that bring you the most joy and play them up in the art gallery garden. I love BOLD color!
Steps to Build an Art Gallery Side Yard GardenBelow is a list of steps I used to create the art gallery side yard garden. It tells you what went into the build and how you might accomplish something similar. At the bottom of these steps you will see a full photo gallery showing the process.
1 – Measure Your SpaceMeasure Your Space – Any garden design is dependent upon the square footage and the space you have available. You might, for instance, only have space for one or two paintings on the wall. Perhaps you have a tiny area that will only allow one elevated bed container. Measure your garden space and draw out a basic idea on a scrap of paper (or on the computer if you’re digitally advanced).
SPECIAL NOTE: My side yard garden has irrigation lines running beneath the ground, so I measured with consideration of where irrigation might influence the position of a container.
2 – List Your GoalsOnce you understand how much space you have available, it is time to prioritize your goals. How will you be using this specific space? As an outdoor cooking area or herb garden? A walkway or outdoor room? Maybe you want a seating area and a reading nook? What type of art do you want in the garden? Now you know what you would like to do and how much space you have to do it. Decide what plants will work best in the area and what your growing goals might be.
Friends came to help clean out the old garden.3 – Get Your Materials If you have all the materials you’ll need, then great. If not, you will need to get paint, brushes, planters, irrigation, tools, soil, and art pieces. Based on your measurements, determine what beds and other garden items you can fit in the garden.
While you will surely have an idea about what plants to grow in this garden, start with the hardscaping materials. Complete this part of the project first then add in the plants at the very end.
4 – Clean Up the GardenCleaning out the old garden is the most tedious part of this project. Get it done with help from your neighbors. Mine helped me and I donated my previous garden beds to the neighborhood so that others can garden.
5 – Paint the Walls or Fences
Prime your walls or fences with primer. Follow with the colors you choose, either one solid color, or a mural like I have done on my masonry fence.
The secret is to find paint which is built specifically for the material you are painting on. Let the paint dry before moving on to the next step.
6 – Place Garden Containers in PlaceWhether you build the containers from a kit for your art gallery side yard garden like I have or use pre-built garden containers, it is important to place them in position before you fill them with soil.
7 – Plan Irrigation for the GardenThis is the time that you absolutely must decide on where your irrigation lines should be placed. If you have a built-in irrigation system like I do, all you will have to do is run smaller lines from the main irrigation system. If you do not have an irrigation system, you can easily plug in the Garden Grid
Watering System I use. Just plug it to your garden hose and turn on the water utilizing a timer.
Trying to hang wall art once the containers are all filled with soil can be difficult. It is much easier to hang wall art before the containers are filled. We used concrete drill bits in order to drill the holes to place the appropriate hangers in the cement block walls. What you use will depend on the structure of your walls.
Paintings installed, soil in, and plants laid out in plan for installation.9 – Fill Containers with Soil There are many techniques for filling large elevated beds. I used either cactus soil or elevated bed container soil in the containers. Once the beds are filled with soil, it’s time to plant.
10 – Plant Your GardenPlanting the garden is all based on your preferences. Live in the Southwest like I do? Plant half cactus and half herbs. Live in the far Northern state? Plant perennials and a vegetable garden? It is important to choose plants that will thrive in your region.
Make sure that irrigation lines run to each plant appropriately. I topped each of my gardens with a rock mulch. This is because we have cats that roam the neighborhood and I don’t want the cats to use my beds as a toilet.
11 – Top Garden with a Sculpture Art DisplayLastly top the garden beds with your favorite sculpture art. I have a fishy theme running through all the beds. Seashells and rocks mix with ceramic fish. Your sculpture preference is all about what you want in your garden.

Best Gifts for Gardeners with Arthritis and Chronic Pain 2023
Need to find a perfect gift for your favorite gardener who might suffer from arthritis or chronic pain? Finding tools and products that will help make gardening easier is particularly important for people who suffer from chronic inflammatory conditions such as arthritis or chronic pain.
Gifts for a Gardener with Arthritis and Chronic Pain Should Make Gardening EasierWhen I was diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis of the spine, I was disappointed to learn there is no cure for the disease. I went on a helpful anti-inflammatory diet and felt so much better. When I returned to gardening after diagnosis, I had to make a few permanent changes in order to make gardening easier. I learned to adopt tools which are more ergonomic in design. Reducing the heavy weight of tools was important as well as preventing uncomfortable bending. Over the last 6 years I have spent hundreds of hours in the garden personally testing the Best Gifts for Gardeners items.
Below is a featured list of best gifts for gardener with arthritis and chronic pain which will help you find the perfect gift for your favorite gardening friend.
Garden Grid Irrigation Systems are Great Gifts for Gardeners with ArthritisOne of the most dramatic problems when gardening is hose dragging. Beyond being inconvenient, if you have chronic pain or another condition, it can physically be painful to pull or manipulate heavy hose lines. The answer is the perfect gift for gardeners with arthritis; Garden in Minutes Garden Grid
Watering Systems.
The addition of irrigation lines means no hose dragging, no back hurting, no watering of plants – it is all done for you. I love this tool beyond words as it is the single most helpful convenience in my garden. I recommend it to everyone. Follow this LINK and use code “Shawna10” and you will get a nice discount of $10 off orders of $100 or more.

Water the Garden without Squeezing a HandleAnother of my top gifts for gardeners with arthritis or chronic pain is a rain wand which has a special handle you do not have to squeeze. My go to tool (which I have attached to all my hoses) is the Dramm RainSelect Rain Wand with a One-Touch Thumb Valve (different wands available at varying prices). It enables 9 different spray types to come out of the head. My favorite spray type is a rain shower as it is very soft when it drops in containers or beds without disturbing soil. The one-touch thumb valve is the secret sauce; it enables you to turn on the water without twisting, turning, or squeezing. This is an excellent solution whether you have a chronic pain condition or not.

The Pool Noodle Trick for Gardeners with ArthritisWhen considering great gifts for gardeners with arthritis, you absolutely MUST get a pool noodle in order to do the “pool noodle wrap trick”. The pool noodle trick is to cut a pool noodle down the middle, then cut it again to a proper length and use it as a wrap to expand the width of a garden tool handle.
Here you see one of my favorite tools, the Cobrahead Weeder, with a pool noodle wrapped around the base. If a gardener you love has a difficult time gripping tightly due to arthritis or another condition, this can help a person grab hold of the tool better. A great and inexpensive solution for gripping difficulties.

Living Wall Gardening Gifts for Gardeners with ArthritisLiving walls are brilliant gifts for gardeners with arthritis. They make it so much easier for someone with chronic pain to garden and better enjoy gardening. This season I’ve been utilizing the Varden Kits from Vertical Gardening Supply and love them. Gardening “up” makes a huge difference.

Ergonomic Shape of a Garden Tool Can Make a DifferenceShort handled garden tools which offer either a grip at the end of a straight tool or a curved handshake-grip-style makes a good ergonomic gift for gardeners with arthritis. This is because it is easier for someone with chronic pain or arthritis to grip in the handshake fashion.
Generally speaking, it is best for short-handled tools to be lighter weight for easier manipulation. Long handled tools should be heavier so that you let the tool do the work. I have been fond of Radius Garden Ergonomic Tool Line. Get the complete 5 piece curved ergonomic tool set at the link below.

Pruners with a Slip-Proof Grip for GardenersChoosing a slip-proof pruner is critical for gardeners with gripping problems. I’m particularly fond of the ColorPoint Bypass Pro
Pruner which has little grip indentations for your fingers. You can lock or unlock the bypass pruners with your thumb alone. It also comes in very bright colors so they are easily fond in the garden. Find all the colors at the link below.
Elevated Garden Beds are the BEST Gifts for Gardeners with ArthritisWhen bending over or spending time crouched on the ground is too difficult or strenuous, it is time to GROW UP! Elevated garden beds are the perfect solution. It is easy to grow virtually any plant in an elevated bed. Pop in flowers, vegetables, cactus, tropicals, and herbs.
I’ve been using VegTrug’s for years. They are long-lasting and very easy to reach and garden. This has been an important part of therapeutic gardening for my back issues. It is not as easy for me to garden in-ground after I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis. I truly love the elevated beds and find them a joy. Order now and get 10% discount if you use the code “SHAWNA10”.

THE ULTIMATE ABOVE AND BEYOND GARDEN GIFT – A Shade Covered Pergola or GazeboNeed sun protection year-round to help protect delicate skin? Yardistry gazebos and pergolas are made from cedar. They hold up to intensive weather issues, offer sun-protecting shade, and work as a permanent entertaining room on your patio or garden. We love our 12 X 12 gazebo here in Mesa, Arizona. I use it as an entertaining area, grill and cooking area, and filming area for my videos. I adore my outdoor room and it works double-time to protect my skin.
This room also functions as a handy place to do projects while I’m outdoors enjoying my garden and keeps the heat off. I often set up a table that is waist-height beneath the pergola so I can more easily do projects outdoors without having to bend over. Granted it IS a BIG gift for gardeners – maybe a gift you should give yourself?

Dairy-free Ranch Dressing Dip Homemade Recipe
Dairy-free ranch dressing? Yep. SO DELICIOUS! Absolutely anti-inflammatory with tons of fresh taste as well. I’ve always said that New Year’s resolutions are for the birds and don’t work. Instead, I have instituted a permanent and life changing commitment goal. Every single year I work to eat half a plate of vegetables at every meal I possibly can. I’ve been doing this since 2015 and my body and health has improved.
I get bored with the same foods all the time, so try to vary raw vegetables and cooked recipes. Raw vegetables and fruits are extremely nutritious because cooking breaks down the components naturally found in foods. Eating “raw” stimulates your digestive system. This also helps you tap into more of the fiber, nutrients, and enzymes in both vegetables and fruits. If you are struggling to get a family member – or yourself – to eat veggies, I understand. Just a bit of dip (raw or not) might encourage more healthy bites.
Why You Should Eat Half a Plate of VegetablesAccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “The 2020–2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans advise incorporating more fruits and vegetables into U.S. residents’ diets as part of healthy dietary patterns. Adults should consume 1.5–2 cup-equivalents of fruits and 2–3 cup-equivalents of vegetables daily.” We Americans consume way less fruits and vegetables than we should on a daily basis. Rotating cooked and raw vegetables is a great way to increase those numbers and fill your diet with taste and nutrition.
Raw Vegetables Last Longer with These Storage TipsRaw vegetables are easy to slice up and store in the refrigerator. Celery, carrots, and other “tall” stem-like veg are particularly long-lasting. But they need to be stored properly. Store in a glass filled with a bit of water for more than a week in the refrigerator.

Ranch Dressing Seasoning Mix Homemade Recipe
Ranch Dressing Seasoning, when combined with buttermilk, is the magical sauce that Americans put on everything from salads to burgers to pizza. Bottled ranch dressing is the number one dressing in the United States. Bottled dressings often have dairy and other unwanted inflammatory ingredients.
Love ranch dressing, but need healthier lower-chemical solutions? This ranch dressing seasoning mix recipe is the solution and it produces a much more aromatic and flavorful result than those packaged mixes. Simply opening up a jar of this fresh seasoning mix will have all your sense tingling.
Customize the recipe by adding more garlic powder or onion powder or whatever you love the most. My favorite is dill – I toss in extra organic dill for a big herbal kick-in-the-pants. You can add whatever it is you like, but know any variation of this recipe is a must have in your kitchen pantry.
Ranch Dressing Seasoning Mix Use Ideas –Poultry Amazingness – Lightly oil raw chicken pieces, then roll in the Ranch Dressing Seasoning Mix before baking or frying. Be sure the seasoning mix clings to the pieces well.Marinades – Mix with oil and a few tablespoons citrus juice and this mix makes an incredible marinade for beef, chicken, or vegetables. Cover the item, then marinate up to 24 hours in the refrigerator.Bread Topping – Mix the seasoning with oil and brush on any grain-full or grain-free cracker, bread, or crust before baking. Delicious!Roasted Vegetables – Oil vegetables, then sprinkle before baking. Cauliflower steaks taste delicious with this topping.Buttermilk-Style Dressing – Use half the Ranch Dressing Seasoning Mix recipe combined with 1 cup soy-free mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon dairy-free milk, and a heaping teaspoon of fresh chopped chives from the garden – use an immersion blender or place in a mason jar and shake shake shake the ranch dressing seasoning mix.
It is the best tasting dressing!
