Are you planning on doing anything more with the 8house universe past what has been announced? Any more arcs on the main 8house comic or other series like FUM? I love what you are doing with it and really hope you keep it going.

There’s some other stuff being talked about yeah. I think a lot of that depends on how the sales look in 6 months or a year.

and thanks!

hey brandon, you started in on Brian Wood for his latest newsletter on twitter, and I was curious how much you know about all these terrible human beings that apparently work in the comics industry that no one will say anything about? Wood, Kot, and De Cam

I would suspect that the reason they aren’t throwing around names is because the awful stuff they’re talking about is either from 2nd hand stories or something told to them in confidence.

As much as I’m not a fan of the dude, I get what Wood was saying in that the internet culture can sometimes dog pile onto people without much idea that everyone fucks up but what you do after that is what should be important. (although I’m not exactly rushing to jump to the defence of Wood or Edmondson-)

Personally I don’t see people getting mad on the internet as reallly hurting most established people’s comic careers.(& if it drove them to suicide-as Wood was saying, I’d assume there was a lot more going on than just internet anger)  And that’s not to say that there isn’t some gross harassment that happens online- but I don’t think that’s what the conversation here is about.

I don’t really know what the end game of throwing out vague “there are bad men in comics” is. Maybe it’s to let women know to watch their backs around some people? I guess that would be good. I don’t really know the context that Alex or Ales were speaking in.

islandcomics:

hi! i’m amika, here’s how i did one of the pages for straylight, coming out in Island #3. This is my very first comic - I feel super lucky to have been given a place in Island where I can just do whatever I like the most, cause Straylight is mostly made up as I go along and just whatever I think would be the most fun and interesting thing to draw at the time. I actually finished this issue way back, so it’s kind of cool to have to look at my old stuff and not hate it while I’m working on the next chapter in the present. Brandon said he wanted me to have a chance to tell my stories before the comics industry had destroyed my spirit.

1. i do all my pencils and stuff on 11x17 bristol board (this one took up the whole page to be scaled down 50% but more recently i’ve been doing it at print size), and then ink over and scan / clean it up in photoshop.

2-3. my colours are pretty much just flats with textures applied, beyond the shadow/sunlight i added in the top centre panel, i like to keep shading to a minimum. i think with my style being pretty geometric and sometimes disproportioned, it helps not to get too concerned about how small shadows would fall unless i’ve got some particular emphasis i’d like to work out.

4-5. my texturing is mostly dot patterns and photoshop noise - lately i’ve begun scanning and using gross damaged old paper and watercolour textures and stuff. you can also kinda see i’m messing around with the values of the things right up until the very last minute so the general light/dark shapes don’t make me unhappy to look at.

6. i work pretty dark on screen, so i remove a lot of the black ink on the version that’s going to print by putting it in cymk mode and using curves and levels to make sure the printer isn’t going to murk things up by using black ink to darken where it doesn’t have to. i also nudge out the cyan/magenta channels - i do this a lot because it seems to soften a lot of the ink edges that lose their smoothness when they’re translated to square pixels!

Writing to you from 8 hours in the future: it’s Sept 15, the beginning of the last day for preordering 8House #6: Mirror Part One!

I haven’t updated for ages so this also seems like a good time to post some drawings of our characters - Sena and the Grudge by Emma, Zun and Ivan by me (no spoilers, except that imho no one really has time to have a relaxed breakfast in the main story)

And you can download our preorder form for Part One here.

Thank you for your support - from Emma, me, Sena, the Grudge, Zun and Ivan and all the others waiting to meet you in November.

What's up with the 8house release schedule? It was going by arcs before, now it's swapping back and forth like Ramna, only in this version Ramna has 4 genders. One is neuter, another can't be comprehended by humans. Also, any plans past Yorris/Mirror?

Here’s an “Everything you need to know about 8house” that the coolest of dudes David Brothers wrote up.

This was always the plan. The idea of the schedules was to keep it monthly but allow for enough time on each book for the art to not get rushed. (same plan with ISLAND)

but yeah, past Mirror we go back to Arclight, then Kiem then more Yorris.

and after that, I’m not sure yet. I was thinking I would like to draw a 2 issue 8house thing written by Marian.
