Hello. I'm a big fan of your work. Island 3 was amazing and it's almost as if each issue is better than the last. Anyway, I'm looking for some Manga reccomendations. I'm sure you get hit up for this all the time so I wont blame you if you ignore this ask b
Thanks! (I’m really happy with how Island is going)
Along with the fantastic work you listed, I would recommend Urasawa’s work. Maybe start with Pluto, his reworking of an Osamu Tezuka Astro boy story. (oh yeah read that too!) and then his 20th Century boys.

Junji Ito’s Uzamaki is an amazing horror manga.
Also anything by Rumiko Takahashi, Akira Toriyama’s early Dragon ball & Dr Slump,
Jiro Matsumoto’s work, Daisuke Igarashi’s Children of the sea.
Kentaro Miura’s Berserk. Makoto Yukimura’s planetes–Golgo 13, Cobra, there’s a lot of great stuff to dig through.

KILL SIX BILLION DEMONS
Hi Brandon. I would like to hear your thoughts on the Marvel Hip Hop variant covers.
hmmm on a very basic level I just didn’t think most of them were good covers. or good recreations of what they were riffing off of.
with the exception of the miss marvel/lauryn hill &
Moon Girl Devil Dinosaur/ Vince Staples covers.–those 2 I thought hit the mark.
I thought the jokes were corny & uninspired – Deadpool has a sandwich instead of money and they changed “Bum rush the show” to “Bum rush the chimichangas”– I just imagine the artists looking at these drawing for the 6 or more hours each of them took like –”this is all I got–deadpool has a …sandwich” – They couldn’ve done Mutant Marauders, they even had a DMX cover & didn’t make it make it a DMX-MAN
they did an MF Doom cover with an image of Thor on it?
Thor? are you fucking with me? the guy you’re doing an album parody on based his look on one of your characters! ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Anywayyy,
I can think of a lot of reasons to not do Hip hop variant covers through Disney but whatever– Personally I think it would work a lot better to have artists do more than just sad xerox imitations of album covers– get guys who live hip-hop–there are a lot in comics) and
see what they do when you let them go. I think a back and forth between art forms would’ve been a million times more interesting.
KRS once said something to the effect that hip hop was taking something and using it ways the manufacturers never intended, These covers are manufactured by Disney to fit a line– they aren’t hip hop, they aren’t rock and roll they aren’t punk they’re just more variant covers.
Is there any chance that a playa like me, will see a playa called Tom Herpich in an issue of Island?
I talked to Tom about it but I should bug him again. I like that guy and his work is ammazing.
