For the shoe fans

I'm not usually that excited about shoes. With feet my size, and the fact I can't wear heels, I'm happy if I find something that fits that I can walk in... but in my search for lace-up boots, I came across this site. I don't know if I'd ever wear them, but they are gorgeous to look at. I really wish I was able to wear (and afford) this pair in particular.

For the footwear fetishests, this company is based in Brisbane. So go crazy.

Looking for lace-up boots - help needed!

Since you guys are always cool and have some excellent footwear, I'm sending out a call for help.

I need a pair of lace-up boots for a steampunk costume I'm getting done for Continuum 5. They need to be:

flat-heelednot too chunky-lookingsize 11less than $200I've seen some nice Edward Meller shoes, but at $395 they're kind of steep, especially since my job only goes till the end of June, and I'll be needing to buy a bustier as well. Sigh.

Anyway, if anyone has suggestions for shops I can visit for s

Axis of Awesome at Comedy Festival

Tim and I saw the Axis of Awesome on Saturday night - very funny stuff, and sporting yet another pint-sized musical genius, so my proclivities are reinforced once more.

With so many songs about tv and films, and fantasy in general, it made me think of fandom Back In The Day - there were a lot of filk groups around then, doing comic songs about fannish interests. These days, they go on stage and perform for money. It makes me feel obscurely delighted that fannish pursuits have so much mainstream c

Vampire Teeth at Comedy Festival

As researching vampire related popular culture now appears to be my default pastime, I've been trawling the Comedy Festival for shows Relevant to My Interests.

Thus is it that on Wednesday 8 April at 9.30, I will be at Highlander Bar (in Highlander Lne, off Flinders St) to see Vampire Teeth by Cath Styles.
If anyone wants to join me for the show, I'll meet you at the bar for a Bloody Mary.

I'll also be trying to see Black Blood: The Return of the New Romantics at Dracula's, so that I can report on

Curious juxtapositions

I've said before that, after I'd written The Opposite of Life I was watching The Lord of the Rings and realised that Sean Astin looked pretty much how I imagined Gary.

I have finally gone and downloaded an icon or two to use as my 'Gary' icons - there's this one and this:

because if that's Gary and not Samwise, the text alters in meaning

And speaking of which, Sean Astin said in a recent interview that his greatest fear was suffocation, and he can't bear to watch films in which someone is buried a

No Heroics

Finally got around to watching an episode of No Heroics on ABC 2. I laughed a lot! A dowdy comic take on what life would be like if there really were British superheroes in today's London. But not in a flashy, violent, the-world-is-ending Watchmen kind of way. More of a let's have some chips and a beer and why don't I ever get laid kind of way.

Basically, it is to Watchmen what Hyperdrive is to Star Trek. If you don't know Hyperdrive either, shame on you!

Watchmen

Joining with the general chorus of OMG! I'd like to say what a relief it was to see 'Watchmen' and find out that it didn't suck. A lot of films based on comics turn out to be fair but vaguely disappointed. Some of them are so far removed from the source material you wonder if the scriptwriter even read it. Some are just plain awful.

It's been at least a decade since I read the comic, but certain scenes and its sensibility remain firmly in my memory. I loved it every time a key memory or favourite

I admit it - I'm an Antony Green geek

In honour of the ABC coverage of Saturday's election in Queensland, I have made a new icon for when I talk about politics.

Tim and I are the kind of politics geeks who stay at home to watch the count - even when it's not our state at the polls! I don't know where we or Australian politics live coverage would be without the magic live mix of Kerry O'Brien and Antony Green.
