Blog THIS, Pal: 2016 in Review

Teenage Headboard Bookshelf

It's that time again - every January 1st, I post a series of random links to blog posts per month. It's a great way to look at what I've written about....but more importantly, to provide a great overview and hopefully drive traffic.

One theme that I'm noticing this year was that I not only didn't update the blog frequently, but I also would talk about having a "rough month". Like many others, 2016 was a really tough year personally. Here's looking forward to 2017 - it will be a bit tougher, bu...

My 2017 Writing Docket

I'll be honest, with all of the writing I've done this year, I know that my presence on this blog has been....well, minimal.

(It's also affected my work for Chicago Now's One Cause At A Time )

But it's been worth it, if only because I have had several stories published (all available via Amazon.com), and several in the hopper (including one from Pro Se Productions which Tommy Hancock announced on the Arts Reviews podcast, Airship 27 Productions, a four-issue miniseries from Last Ember Press...

DOCTOR WHO - The Return of Doctor Mysterio (Review)

This may sound like hyperbole, but this year's Doctor Who Christmas Special was just what I needed after a tough year - entertaining, funny, and willing to take some chances.

I always get a kick when Doctor Who stretches itself and attempts to integrate more modern tropes - when it works (like Season Eight's Time Heist), it works beautifully; when it doesn't (like Season Three's 42 or Season Nine's Sleep No More), it's either still watchable (like 42) or a complete abomination (...

Your Serling/Bogie Day Presents

You know the drill - for years, I've been suggesting that we celebrate Serling Day and Bogie Day on December 25th, especially for those who are tired of the usual holiday hype.

Because both men were born on December 25th.

Plus, it's a great way to celebrate two people whose contribution to popular culture cannot be measured.

Plus, the great thing about celebrating Serling Day or Bogie Day - they don't compete with each other. You don't have to worry about shopping. And celebrating is as easy as...

Happy Holidays from Blog THIS, Pal!

Like many of you, I'll be spending this holiday weekend at Mom's. And like many of you, Monday will be a "day off" because Christmas is on a Sunday.

So just in time for the holiday, here are some holiday-themed videos via YouTube.

(And no, I didn't forget Bogie or Serling Day - but you're going to have to wait until tomorrow)

Mondays with Columbo: NEGATIVE REACTION

One of the great aspects about Columbo is that, at times, the casting is perfection, especially when it comes to the antagonist. Jack Cassidy and Robert Culp are two of the better-known, more popular antagonists, but Negative Reaction does something that we wouldn't expect....

...cast Dick Van Dyke as a villain. And an especially arrogant man with simmering anger to boot.

The plot, in a nutshell, is that Van Dyke plays a photographer in an unhappy marriage. So instead of getting a div...

Second City's WINNER OF OUR DISCONTENT: A Review

Let's be totally honest - if you supported Donald Trump in November, you're probably not going to enjoy some of the sketches in Second City's latest review, The Winner of Our Discontent.

For the rest of us, don't worry - this Second City revue is not only one of their funniest revues, but it's also one of their more insightful productions that really strikes at the heart of how people are feeling...and processing...the events of the past year.

Now, if you are expecting particularly partisan ske...

Where Stories Come From: "WHEN THE SHADOW SEES THE SUN: Blank Page"

When Tommy Hancock of Pro Se Productions announced that he was doing a benefit book for creatives and depression, I eagerly jumped on board. Sadly, like me,Tommy lost a good friend to depression, and I've documented my own struggles.

The friend was a gentleman named Logan Masterson, a fellow writer whom I only knew casually via Facebook. Even though it was easy for me to jump on board because of his passing (as well as my friend Vincent's passing), this was an easy, yet difficult, personal ess...
