As Things Are Calming Down.....

Hard to believe it's been two months since I moved into Mom's apartment.

Things have been...well, needlessly complicated. Have some freelance work, but always looking for me. (And one particular assignment is... when they dump a series of revisions at 5:00 pm on a Friday - on top of a huge Sunday deadline - it's not pleasant).

Still, things are settling down....Mom's getting better, and we're hoping that she comes home in June. (We were thinking May 31st, but there are some other complicat...

Happenings Ten Years' Time Ago

Ten years ago, I packed up, rented a truck, and moved 300 miles from St. Louis to Chicago. It wasn't an easy decision - leaving everyone I cared about behind and moving to help care for Mom - but it was one of the few decisions I never regretted because it had to be done.

In the past month, I've packed up, rented a truck, and am moving my things into storage. I'm also going to move (temporarily) into my mom's apartment while she's ill.

Short form - Mom's in structured rehab due to an infection in her foot. Nearly avoided amputation, but she's got a long road back.

The Joys of Being A Caregiver

Last week, I called Mom - after all, I was planning to visit and wanted to give her a heads-up. After one call went to voice mail, I waited and called again...no response. After calling a neighbor to ask her to check in on Mom, I made my way....and Mom was in bed.

Short form: Mom had fallen from the toilet and spent the night on the bathroom floor. And that's not a joke.

A Few Words on Fan Entitlement

Right now, I'm feeling like the stereotypical old man who stands on his porch and yells, "Hey, you kids, get the hell off my lawn!"

In recent weeks, I've encountered several incidents of fans basically acting...well, fannish. Mostly on Facebook. People sharing videos with titles like "Marvel Gives Up Social Justice Storylines" or "Axanar Lawsuit Settlement: Star Trek Belongs To The Fans". In fact, after making a joke about Tom Baker, I was accused of being an "ageist, sexist pipsqueak".
