Watch on: YouTube – Vid.Me – Patreon (audio RSS feed)

3D Printing. Open Source hardware. Free Software marketing. These are three topics I love. And, as it so happens, so does the President of Aleph Objects (makers of the LulzBot 3D printers), Harris Kenny. This is us talking about that good stuff for a solid hour.  Fun times are had.

Linux-Based PDA w/Physical Keyboard – “Super” PocketCHIP

Watch on: YouTube – Vid.Me – Patreon (audio RSS feed)

I love mobile devices.  The classic “PDA” may be my favorite device form factor and size.  In order to create my ideal “Linux Powered PDA” (debian based) I am modifying a PocketCHIP by adding a speaker and physical keyboard — along with some software modifications.

The results are freaking amazing.

Net Neutrality. No Big Deal.

Watch on: YouTube – Vid.Me – Patreon (audio RSS feed)

Let’s talk about Net Neutrality. Specifically… how people are freaking out about it… and it’s not really that big of a deal.  Especially compared to DRM.  Which sucks.

The Mozilla Conundrum

Watch on: YouTube – Vid.Me – Patreon (audio RSS feed)

When does a desire to use a technology get overridden by the actions / political stances of the people who make it? Let’s think about that in the context of the makers of the Firefox web browser: Mozilla.

They’ve had their share of controversy (from data mining and DRM to funding organizations that… maybe they shouldn’t have). Do those, sometimes controversial, actions and statements cause you to boycott Firefox?

Linux powers Supercomputers. (All of them.)

Watch on: YouTube – Vid.Me – Patreon (audio RSS feed)

Linux has been the undisputed king of servers for quite some time now.  But, with the latest Top 500 report (a regular list of the 500 fastest super computers in the world)… something interesting happened.

For the first time in history, the 500 fastest super computers all (without exception) are powered by Linux.

Every.  Single.  One.

Sorry Microsoft.  (Not that sorry.)

There’s even a handy-dandy pie chart showing the usage of various operating system families in use by these 500, mega-crazy-fast computers.  Quite possibly the best pie chart I’ve ever seen.

If you look at the very top of the list, you’ll find something rather amazing.

There is a super computer (Linux powered, naturally) capable of over 100 petaflops of processing power — 125 petaflops, to be precise.  Roughly 2 and a half times faster than the next fastest-in-the-world super computer.

This computer, the Sunway TaihuLight, is powered by 40,960 RISC processors, with a total of 10,649,600 individual CPU cores.  Yeah.  You read that right.  10 million cores.

Each of those processors, the SW26010, runs at a clock speed of 1.45 GHz.

How much memory does it have?  1.3 petabytes.

Absolutely massive.

All of this is located in the Wuxi Super Computer Center in China.  (Worth noting: The second fastest computer in the world, Tianhe-2, is also located in China.)
