Featured Photos – 25 November 2021

We went to Cheltenham for our son’s graduation, and the next day we went for a bracing walk on Crickley Hill, which is owned and run by the National Trust.

The wind was bitterly cold and the hilltop exposed, but the views were wonderful, and we could make out the hills of Wales.

I love this hill because it is the site of ancient settlements going back to the Neolithic period, and if you’ve read my Darkeningstone books, you’ll know that I’m fascinated by these things.

I’m sure people built on thi...

Death at Blackingstone Rock – the ebook is now free

The story of Death at Blackingstone Rock was originally conceived as a tale told through a series of emails, sent out in as near to real time as I could manage, and members of this site can still experience the story in that format. Membership of this site is free, and signing up for the story is free – click here to begin

I wanted to give readers the option of owning a complete set of all the emails in one volume, so I compiled all the messages into an ebook.

Originally, I sold the ebook and do...

A Chat with the Author Michael Campling – 17 November 2021

I made a recording at home this week, and I’m asking lots of questions!

Feedback from listeners is very useful, so please let me know what you’d like to hear and/or see in these podcast episodes.

I can perform readings of your favourite part of a book, or let you into the secrets of my work in progress. It’s up to you.

I’d also like to know how you feel about the police aspects of the Devonshire Mysteries. Too much or not enough? Just right?

If you have a question for me, please pop it in a comm...

More autumnal views today as the colder weather rolls in.

There was a mist in the air that gave the Devon landscape a magical feel.

I hope you enjoy the photos.

Featured Photos – 8 November 2021

Thank you to the person who emailed to say that they enjoy the photos in terms of travel photography. I hadn’t thought of my pictures in that way, but I found it very encouraging.

The Devon hills and lanes are being slowly decorated with golden leaves.

The scenes may give you an idea of the sense of peace people can experience here.

I hope you enjoy the photos.

Losing my marbles.

While waiting for our car to go through its annual MOT (a Ministry of Transport test for safety), I wandered over to a local tourist attraction, the House of Marbles.

In truth, there wasn’t much choice. The garage is outside the small town of Bovey Tracey and the House of Marbles is pretty much the only thing nearby. But I enjoyed my visit. We used to take the kids there when they were little, and they always had fun watching the marble runs, waiting patiently for their turn t...

A Chat with the Author Michael Campling – 3 November 2021

This chat was recorded in my writing room at home as I’ve pulled a muscle in my leg, and it’s hard to record while limping along the lanes.

I’m answering a question that was kindly suggested by a reader in a comment on this site.

Do I actually like Dan Corrigan? That’s the topic I explore in this chat, so I hope you find it interesting.

If you have a question for me, please pop it in a comment or drop me a line and let me know. I’ll answer it as best as I can.

New Anthology – Darkness Awaits

Just in time for Halloween, I made a new anthology of horror stories.

To make my catalogue of books easier to manage, I’m slowly reorganising them and replacing some titles.

I have written a new unpublished horror story recently, so I added it to the existing collection to create this new title, Darkness Awaits.

Here are the details:

Darkness Awaits Us All.

We can try to fight against it, but sometimes we might decide to step into its velvety shadows and explore its depths.
These tales will keep...

Featured Photos – 30 October 2021

After last week’s photographs, one reader emailed to ask about the appearance of autumn colours, so I thought I’d go out and find some.

Devon is a mild corner of the UK, but even taking that into account, the weather has been warmer than usual, and the trees have held onto their green leaves with a certain degree of determination this year.

Finally though, the leaves are changing and drifting downwards in lazy spirals.

Another reader commented on the site to say that the featured photos inspire ...
