Is Wool by Hugh Howey a Good Book for Teenagers?
There’s been some discussion online about the labelling of Hugh Howey’s Wool as a book for teenagers or young adults.
The paperback version of Wool mentions The Hunger Games and this suggests that the publishers are aiming Wool at the same market.
Like many people, I’m uncomfortable with the tendency to label books with age groups – especially when it’s done for marketing purposes.
When I was a teenager, I read books for adults and I was enriched by it. I loved P.G. Wodehouse and Agatha Christ...

What I’ve Learned From Self-Publishing (So Far) – Part 2
OK – so if you’ve mastered (or just laughed yourself silly at) Lesson 1 – Patience, then this one shouldn’t be too hard.
Lesson 2 – Persistence
This is easy to say and it’s a well-worn phrase that ‘persistence pays’ so I’m sorry if this sounds trite, but this is something I’ve come to believe in.
And I’m not even talking about the kind of persistence that is needed to write a best-seller or to make a long-term career as a writer. I’m just dealing with the everyday persistence needed to make a...

Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award – Pitching Wildly
Writing a pitch or a synopsis can be difficult and frustrating – to put it mildly. There just isn’t the buzz you get from scribbling or tapping away at dialogue and action. There’s no sense of progression, no continuity, no…fun. It’s all just strip, strip, strip the whole novel back to its bare essentials.
BUT – it’s go to be done. Agents and publishers will want to see a pitch, Amazon listings need a description and paperbacks need a blurb.
And then, there’s theAmazon Breakthrough Novel Awar...

What I’ve Learned From Self-Publishing (So Far) – Part 1
This sounds simple but believe me, it’s one of the hardest lessons to learn. When you’ve spent so long immersed in your first draft, you become ‘that person who’s writing a book’. It is a sudden and strange transition when you finish that draft and suddenly become ‘that person who wrote a book’.
Job done, right?
Well, yes and no.
The fact that you’ve finished a draft is no mean feat. It is an accomplishment that many will attempt and few will achieve. You’re right...

The Darkeningstone: Trespass
Jake never liked urban myths. But this is not an urban myth. And it did not happen to someone else, but to him. He’s set it down as best he can remember. Whether you believe it or not, is up to you.
The Darkeningstone combines gritty, edgy modern-day action with an adventure across time. Discovered over 5,000 years ago, the Darkeningstone affects everyone who finds it.
So remember this:
Somewhere, sometime, The Darkeningstone is waiting for you.
A fast-paced adventure across time, with short chapters crammed with cliff-hangers. There’s vengeance here and the threat of violence. There’s a plot you can get your teeth into and characters you can believe in.
Jake was too smart to believe the rumours about Scaderstone Pit, but now he’s in more danger than he could ever have imagined.
In 1939, as World War II looms, the lives of two men will be changed forever.
Over 5,000 years ago, a hermit will keep the stone a secret. But someone is watching him – someone with murder in his heart.
What will you see when you look into The Darkeningstone?
If you dare.

Hi and Welcome
Hello. I’m Mikey Campling.
That is right isn’t it?
There’s certainly somebody there when I look into the mirror and they look similar to a picture I’ve seen with my name on it.
OK – let’s just assume that I am Mikey Campling and you’re whoever the hell you think you are and we’ll get started.
This site is a little thin just now but more will be coming soon, including podcasts, opinions and general garbled nonsense.
There’ll also be a newsletter because there just aren’t enough of those in the World right?
That’s it. I’ve run out of stuff to say. Disperse. Live your lives. Bye.
Don’t be a stranger.
