A Chat with the Author Michael Campling – 10 September 2021 – Indoors and thinking about pacing

Beaten by the unpredictable weather, I’m inside for this chat.

There’s no Lottie panting alongside me, and no pesky wind either. I talk a bit about the pacing of my work in progress, i.e. keeping the story, and importantly, the mystery, rolling along at a reasonable speed.

Also, in response to a question from a site member (thank you, Randolph) I’m chatting about allotments, which are mentioned in Mystery in May.

I hope you find it interesting, and if you’d like your questions answered, please l...

As autumn approaches we have the season of swirling mists and mellow fruitfulness that the Bard told us about.

The mist seems to dampen the sound, and our walk was very peaceful and calming.

I hope that you enjoy the photos.

My adventures in mountain biking are coming along. I’m a member of a group of mountain bike enthusiasts, and at the weekend we went on a ride up on Dartmoor.

We couldn’t always find the trail, but that’s the way it is with bridlepaths and footpaths on Dartmoor: they may be marked on a map, but that doesn’t mean that they’re still used.

We trundled through bracken and gorse, explored some pretty lanes, and rolled up and down rocky paths.

Great fun, good exercise, and lots of fresh air.

We set off...

In response to a question from a site member (thanks, NC), I’m chatting about the way that the audiobook of A Study in Stone came to be made.

I hope you find it interesting, and if you’d like your questions answered, please let me know by commenting or dropping me a line, and I’ll do my best.

Work in Progress – a snippet of the new Devonshire Mystery

It’s time to share a snippet of the upcoming Devonshire Mystery.

The finished version of this book still feels like it’s some way off, but I thought you might like to see how it’s shaping up. Sharing it now will also help to keep me accountable.

The new novel still doesn’t have a title, but much of the action takes place in Exeter, so the picture is a snap I took of Exeter Cathedral.

I hope you like the look of the snippet. As always when I share an advance snippet, it’s very much a work in prog...

A Chat with the Author Michael Campling – 24 August 2021

In today’s chat, I talk a little about the importance of characters in my writing, and about the principle I have of keeping my work ‘in the moment’.

And, arguably more importantly, Lottie looks for the ball we lost yesterday.

I hope you enjoy listening.

I was Interviewed for the Self-Publishing Formula Podcast

I was recently interviewed for the Self-Publishing Formula Podcast. The audience of that podcast is other writers rather than readers, but I’ll share the video below in case it’s of interest.

I was rather nervous, but it was nice to have the opportunity to thank the wonderful people who helped to kickstart my writing career. I’ve been writing for a long time, but until recently it had been a bit precarious. The SPF Foundation enabled me to put my writing on a firmer footing, and that means more ...

Another chat – a ramble while I ramble – recorded while I walk through the Devon fields (and lanes) with Lottie.

I hope you enjoy listening.

Featured Photos – 16 August 2021

A summer’s day in Devon.

I took these while out for one of my daily walks with Lottie, this time accompanied by Sue.

I still sometimes have to pinch myself at the realisation that I live in the middle of this beautiful landscape, a joy made all the sweeter by the fact that I get to share it with the beautiful Mrs C. Such riches, and more than I deserve.

It was a beautiful day and you could see for miles. I hope you enjoy the photos.
