I part my lips to speak, to tell her I’m not a VC. But I flash back to the racquetball game, to the face-lift suggestion from my sister. If this angel thinks I’m a VC, that means my face-lift is working. My costume is doing what I want it to do—it’s making it possible for me to be me. To have a conversation as Flynn Parker the guy, not as Flynn Parker the multimillionaire.

She doesn’t know who I am. And I don’t correct her. “It can be.”

She nods thoughtfully then roams her gaze over my black attire. She taps her bottom lip. “Hmm. Let’s see what we have here tonight because I don’t think you’re a ninja.”

I punch the air. “Keep going.”

She studies me more closely. “You’re something mysterious. You’re trying to fly under the radar. Am I getting warmer?”

More like hot. “Yes.”

Her brow knits. “You want to go unnoticed, at least for the moment.”

I tense, hoping she’s not putting two and two together as to my identity. Absently, I raise my hand to my glasses, wondering if they give me away. But then I remember. I’m wearing my contacts tonight, something I rarely do.

She snaps her fingers. “I know! You’re a stealth start-up,” she says, using the term for a new company that’s keeping quiet.

I raise my arms in victory, a thrill racing through me. “Everyone else has guessed code ninja or SEO ninja, but you’re the first person all night to get it right. I am, indeed, a stealth start-up.”

Admittedly, donning black pants, a black shirt, and a black eye-mask might have made it challenging to guess. But then again, the angel figured it out, and all without the missing start-up button.

“Your lips gave you away.”

She recognized me from my lips? I furrow my brow behind my mask. “What do you mean?”

“Your mouth,” she says, raising her fingers dangerously near to my lips. “I could tell you weren’t a ninja because your lips aren’t covered. Ninjas cover you’re their mouths.” I relax again since she was referring to my clothes. “Only their eyes show. But you’ve covered most of your eyes, and you’re showing only your mouth and your chin. That’s how I knew you had to be something other than a ninja.”

“I could kiss you for that,” I blurt out. I take a step back and hold up a hand. “I’m sorry. That was probably terribly inappropriate.”

I have no patience for its theatrics. I kick it shut, eager for the next part of the evening to begin.

Her laughter sounds across the library and echoes off its dark wood shelves bursting with books. A leather couch takes center stage, flanked by a mahogany table.

“Are you in a rush to read something?” she asks coyly.

“Why, yes, I was looking for a particular book.” I stroll to the bookshelf along one wall, running my fingers across the spines, from old hardcovers like Tess of the d’Urbervilles to modern thrillers from the likes of Clive Cussler to non-fiction reads on the habits of highly effective people. “I thought if you wanted to go to the library you’d want to read. Naturally.”

“Of course. Read me a story. A bedtime story.” She leans against the wall next to a writing desk with a green lamp on it, the kind that has one of those chains you pull down to turn it on. She goes with the moment, and this night seems like role-play with her. I half want to understand who she is. But in a way, I’d rather experience everything she seems to want to give. Her body. Her mouth. Her mind. Whoever she is here in the library is as real as whoever she is behind the mask. My mission is to make sure she gets everything she wants.

I grab the nearest book and crack it open. It’s a James Patterson. “Once upon a time, there was a woman at a party who wanted to be kissed,” I say, walking to her, the pages open.

April 2018: A (Quick) Life Update

I'm just realizing that I haven't blogged since my birthday week (oops). So much for blogging every Monday in 2018. To be honest, I haven't had much to report. Once I turned 21, I've been hanging out with friends a lot more and away from my computer more than I ever have been (something my mom is positively loving).

Unfortunately, I've also been pretty stuck on writing a new Chapter 8 for  Unmoored . But I have booked an editor (and now have a hard deadline, so I will be working my butt off to meet it). I've also let go from the flawed idea that this book has to be the same length as the first book. Because everyone knows that, at some point, writing to a length will eventually lead to adding in unnecessary filler. And no one wants to read lazily-written filler content in the middle of a novel.

I'm also low-key doing Camp NaNoWriMo but haven't done much because of the above reasons and not feeling well on more days than I would like to admit. Are you doing Camp NaNo this year? Comment below about how it's going! If you're not doing Camp NaNo, tell me how your April is going instead.

March 2018: Birthday Plans

I don't know about you, but I feel like 2018 is speeding by. If I wasn't constantly being reminded that today was my 21st birthday by everyone I know, I might have forgotten about it until this morning. My personal life has taken the majority of my attention since I finished finals and decided to take this semester off, but that doesn't mean I haven't been busy.

March 2018: In Like a Lion (Or, So I Planned)

If you heard about Nor'easter Riley (ironically, the same name of my dog who hates the rain), you may have guessed that I planned to be super productive this past weekend. And I was, just not in writing: but in cleaning the home in preparation for our Oscar's viewing party with friends.

Friday was a lazy day (the weather sucked and it had me in a very tired mood), Saturday somehow got filled with lots of errands I hadn't even planned, and the same for Sunday (before all my family friends showed up and I stayed up way too late considering I had jury duty today).

Oh, yeah: Jury Duty. I guess you would say my March came "in like a lion," just not the way I had planned. But I am making progress on the new Chapter 8 and if you're a beta reader for Unmoored, I've posted the Prologue and Chapters 1-5 on BetaBooks. Now, I can focus on that (plus figure out what I'm doing for my 21st birthday).

February: Writing A New Chapter

As you can tell from the title, I am writing a new chapter in the middle of revising Unmoored because I condensed the first 10 chapters into 7 (don’t ask me how—it just happened—I was trying to expand them, but that obviously didn’t happen). The new chapter is Chapter 8 (which you can see below) and I'm excited to delve a little more into Ivy and Alec's individual college lives before their supernatural problems take center stage.

February: Learning InDesign (Finally)

As you can see from the title of this blog post, I have finally learned how to use InDesign. If you're wondering what finally made me bite the bullet, I'll tell you: the new Word update didn't read the main fonts I was using to format  The Belgrave Legacy ,  Unmoored , and all my other books. So, rather than having to outsource all my book formatting in the future, I finally learned InDesign (with the help of this amazing Skillshare course).

And in order for there to be consistency for the whole series, I also had to reformat The Belgrave Legacy  (although I have yet to publish this because my cover artist has gotten so booked—which is amazing for her, but a bit tough for me). I learned it in the past 2 days and am now finally getting back to revising ​ Unmoored . And I'm super proud that I learned how to do it quickly and am now able to continue format all my own books.
