Chapter 60: Play Time

A little after two in the afternoon, I crawled out from under Eddy’s house. Hours of inaction were driving me crazy, but I knew I couldn’t find Dmitri at the Char Bar for at least a couple more hours. Besides, there was someone I wanted to see more.

Michael was at school. I walked a couple miles back to my car and took off. I had no intention of talking to him, as I suspected that not only was the school locked down like Fort Knox after the recent parade of school shootings, but a plain-clothe...

Chapter 59: Eddy

“Take me,” Eddy said when we first met. That was right after he heard I was the executioner. A lot of the guys in LCI said that to me. The ones who still had souls and wanted to talk were the ones who sought me out from among all the other guards.

My official assignment in the prison system was MEDICAL ADMINISTRATION; at least that’s what it said on my door. I didn’t have a lot to do during the regular weeks, other than approve transfer requests to the full-time care facility that the system o...

Chapter 58: The Waiting Game

“Yo, Greg,” I said when he answered. “I got one more for you.”

He was silent.

“Greg, you still there?”

In a quiet voice, he said, “That detective was back.”

“Tolliver?”

“Yes, Detective Tolliver, you idiot,” he shouted. “I can’t do this, I’m gonna get busted.”

We went through the same song and dance, but it was early, and he had a lot of coffee drinking to do before he got his day started, so it didn’t last long. I could tell that the fact that he hadn’t been busted by Tolliver yet had eased his min...

Chapter 57: Reminders

I slipped through the shadows and looped back to my car. It didn’t matter if anyone saw me, just so no one could connect Yost’s murder to my car. I couldn’t get another car; it was too damn difficult.

I drove east out of Columbus to the middle of nowhere and stopped the car along the side of the road. I was exhausted and couldn’t stop shaking.

Over the last two days I had done what needed to be done to find out what happened to Tonya. As a result, three bodies lay on my conscience. I cared abou...

Chapter 56: Righteous Justice

I didn’t drink what the hostess brought, but I wanted to hang out and watch Ryan for a while so I ordered a Columbus Brewing Company Bodhi, one of the best beers I’ve ever tasted. It might have been the stress or the dehydration but that beer tasted better than anything that had ever crossed my lips. I nursed it slowly and watched the scene unfold before me.

The girls in the bar got drunker and louder, the boys got drunker and meaner. The room became a sweating, hormone-induced amalgam as the...

Chapter 55: Trust

I’d never trusted anyone in the same way that I trusted Tonya. After my dad betrayed me, it wasn’t easy to trust anyone, but I’d known Tonya my whole life. It felt as though she was the only one in the world I could actually confide in. She was the only one who really knew me.

But you can’t force trust just like you can’t just turn off suspicion. Trust is a switch inside of your head. When it’s turned on you can look past things, even the most obvious faults. It’s a good thing. It means you’re...

Chapter 54: Hooking Up

It was 10:45 p.m., but I was still sitting in the car a block down from the row of campus bars. I would visit every one if I had to, but I decided to start with Voodoo Denim since Ryan had been holding a mug with the bar’s logo in several of the pictures.

I was completely unaware of the protocol for something like this, and I didn’t want to blow my cover by showing up too early. Who knows when a guy like Yost shows up to the bar? For all I knew, 10 meant 11:30.

My cell phone rang. I shot up. Th...
