Chapter 91: Resting Place
It is October 21, 2027, 11:56 PM. My legs, feet, arms, hands and sternum have been bound to a metal table covered in leather. After the straps are cinched down, the table is raised up so that I can see the crowd that has assembled on the other side of the glass in front of me.
I survey the mixed group and they are all strangers. I presume that I saw some of them at my trial, but it was a short affair for which I had little concern. I presume that they are family members of the men who died by...

Chapter 90: Cement
Three weeks later I sat on the other side of the glass from Greg at the county lockup awaiting my trial. He was my first visitor. There was no anger or resentment, only apathy.
As I stared at him in silence, I wondered why he’d come. He’d cooperated with the authorities, told them everything he knew, which was more or less everything that I knew. If there was any more room to add additional nails in my coffin, he put them there.
Finally, he picked up the phone. I picked up mine. We sat in silen...

Chapter 89: Tonya
It was her hair. Even in second grade I noticed her hair. Tussled, ragged, red like fire. Her eyes burned as her soul simmered beneath her skin. Even her touch electrified like a static shock. I wanted to ask her out since I was eight. Everything I ever wanted was in those eyes. She had me hooked from the moment I saw her to the last day of her life.
As my mind slipped away, I fought back. I remembered the faces of all of the men I killed, the ones for the state. Then my mind wandered to the a...

Chapter 88: The Shot
The gunshot echoed for what seemed like minutes. I expected to be dead by the time my ears returned to normal. I instinctively searched my head and then my body for a hole, but I found nothing.
I looked up as Detective Tolliver fell to his knees. His gun lay several feet away on the floor. He didn’t seem to be bleeding, but he was out cold.
As he lay on the ground, I tore open the buttons of his shirt to reveal a navy blue bullet proof vest underneath. After a few moments he screamed like a bab...

Chapter 87: Confessions
“I don’t care if you kill me,” I said to Tolliver, and I didn’t. “Just clear my conscience before you waste me. Why Martin Dawes?”
He thought about it and then nodded. “OK,” he said. “I’ll play, why not? Martin Dawes was a pawn, and he was a fuck up. We needed him taken care of anyway. He did some legal work for us, but he mostly just distributed to low level dealers, it’s never suspicious for low-lifes to visit their lawyer. They’d get some legal advice and a package.
“But he couldn’t keep his...
