Chapter 86: Tempers
My hands clenched into fists, and I began to fixate on the gun behind my back.
“I know the blind rage you felt as you realized your wife had been cheating on you for years. As you realized it wasn’t just sex, but she actually loved someone else. Planned to leave with him. I know that.”
“You fucked her!” I screamed.
He nodded. “Sure I did,” he said. “So did a bunch of other people. So did half of Columbus. So what?”
I couldn’t resist anymore, I pulled out my gun and pointed it at his face, my hand...

Chapter 85: The Phone Call
I had heard the phone call. I’d gotten home a few minutes early from my shift that night, something that never happened. But that evening I knew Michael was at his grandparents for the night, and I was only in the office because we had an execution scheduled the next day. Just so things were in order, nobody would care if I left. I didn’t talk to anybody, I just left.
I had parked the car in the driveway and crept in quietly through the back door. I had a bottle of wine in one hand and flowers...

Chapter 84: St. John
Greg and I left immediately after Tolliver hung up. I dropped him off at St. John’s Arena and drove down Lane Avenue to High Street to park in one of the residential neighborhoods. It would be at least a ten minute walk, but I knew the physical activity would calm my nerves.
Students flooded the sidewalks inside and around the Ohio State campus. Even though St. John’s was near the outer edge, parking was at a premium on campus and St. John’s provided one of the few on-campus lots. Any time of...

Chapter 83: The Plan
With no money, other than the small wad of bills I took from my house, and no history of spying, we were going to meet Tolliver face to face. Something inside me told me that in the right circumstance, Tolliver would love to come clean about everything, but only if he thought I was nailed.
Greg was a gadget head at heart, so he went home and returned to the safe house with a plethora of electronics equipment. He had a miniature camera that he said could pass for a button and a small, lavalier...

Chapter 82: The Meeting
Despite being closer to solving the mystery of Tonya’s death than I had at any time since her death, I slept deeply on the lumpy couch, thanks in part to the beers Greg and I put away before bed. I was surprised that I didn’t feel hungover.
Greg snored, curled in the fetal position on the recliner.
“Greg,” I said. “Greg!”
I flung a pillow at him, hitting him squarely in the head. He jerked spastically and fell onto the floor. “What the hell, dude!”
I laughed hard for the first time in a long time...

Chapter 81: Change of Plans
I stared at the call log in disbelief. Greg rattled off names. “James Taylor, J. Tolkien…”
I cut him off. “Detective James Tolliver.”
He stopped talking, and looked at me, eyes wide in disbelief.
“Son of a bitch,” I cursed, stood up and began pacing around the room. “Tolliver. It’s always been Tolliver. It’s always been…”
Then I told Greg everything. I told him how Tolliver showed up late to the crime scene and took over. I told him how he tried to take me out of prison holding and “transfer” me...

Chapter 80: UDF
I turned on the light and watched through the front door’s side window as the police drove away. I was afraid that maybe Frank was home and asleep, so I shut off the light after the police turned the corner. I couldn’t anticipate how he’d react if he saw me there. He was my friend, but he was no Greg, and he was high strung to boot.
I mentally reviewed the plan Greg and I had concocted. We figured that it would take about an hour for the cops to sort out his accident with the stationary van an...
