Chapter 72: Losing Traction

We took off. Fast. Cutting down country roads and sliding around hairpin turns.

The second truck was still close behind us. On the straightaways, shots would slice through the night air. We both knew it was impossible to hit a moving target at such a distance, but we slouched down in our seats and tucked our necks in case one of the bullets got lucky.

“Try to get a speeding ticket!” I screamed.

“What?” Greg screamed back.

“Go someplace with a lot of cops and try to get them on your tail!”

“Where a...

Chapter 71: Checking Out

I didn’t know what to do, so I ran. I didn’t have a car or a plan, so I scrambled out of the building and ran toward the road. I was covered in sweat from the eternal dance party and half of my hair must have been singed from the explosion.

Tucker sprung from the farmhouse. He barreled into me like a linebacker.

I staggered sideways but kept on my feet. He tumbled past me, tripped and fell to the ground. I looked back as he scrambled to his feet and came after me, but I was a hundred pounds lig...

Chapter 70: Asphyxiation

“Climb onto the table,” I ordered Dmitri. “Sit there.”

He pulled himself up from the floor and complied, staring me down with an annihilatory stare.

“I want to know one thing,” I said, pressing the gun to his forehead. “What do you know about my wife’s death?”

The gun didn’t seem to bother him. “I promote life, not death.”

“Right.” I motioned to the chemicals on the table. “What the hell is this?”

“The universe provided these instruments,” he answered calmly. “It’s only natural that the brain and...

Chapter 69: Dance Party

I’m not a bad dancer, but I couldn’t find any rhythm that was spewing out of the speakers in the tin can of a building. It didn’t seem to bother Dmitri, though. He closed his eyes and flung his body around. He was like a Phish concert mixed with a gun show set in Vladivostok.

I was out of energy. All I wanted was to sit down, but I couldn’t risk unbalancing the room. So I kept flailing about. At one point, Dmitri hugged me and we swayed back and forth together to the hypnotic sounds of what I...
