Chapter 79: Interrogation

I froze as the car pulled alongside me. A policeman stuck his head out the passenger side window.

“It’s an odd time to take a stroll, isn’t it?”

I considered fleeing but knew that I wouldn’t stand a chance with half of Hilliard’s police force only a block away. “I walk this late all the time. It helps clear my head so I can sleep.”

He gave me the once over twice. “I enjoy a walk as much as the next guy,” he told me. “But everybody else in the neighborhood seems to be walking toward the hubbub on...

Chapter 78: Siren Song

Police sirens snapped me to attention. I had stayed inside the house much longer than I had planned. It was supposed to be a quick snatch and out.

I dashed to the living room to peek out the curtains. Flashing red and blue lights lit up the neighborhood. Greg was frantically waving his hands trying to convince the police that he accidentally crashed into a stationary van without being drunk or stoned. Police fanned out around Yee’s house as two officers approached his front door. His alarm was...

Chapter 77: Home Sweet Home

“You know this is stupid with a capital S,” Greg said as we came to a stop four blocks from my house.

“You know I’ve got to do this. I’ve got to find out who called Tonya. Somebody wasn’t able to hack into an AT&T account to get a call list.”

“Just because I play Second Life doesn’t make me a hacker.”

“You spend fifty hours a week on the Internet. I’d think some kind of techy hocus pocus would rub off on you.”

“I’m not a hacker. I research.”

“Yeah, I know. You’re the only guy I know who follows th...

Chapter 76: Puzzle Pieces

My heart pounded in my chest.

“Do you want to run that by me again?” I asked the voice.

“I know who killed your wife.”

“Don’t be surprised if I don’t believe you.”

“I’m certain now. That’s why it’s time we meet.”

“You haven’t even told me who you are.”

The voice paused, and I heard a long release of air. “Kurt, this is Detective Tolliver.”

So there it was. The one man helping me was the one man who should have wanted me to fail the most.

I didn’t know what to say, but I couldn’t let the opportunity p...

Chapter 75: Safe House

Eddy eventually found something I could use—an Android Tablet. After a few tries, I logged into a neighbor’s network with the password “Ilovecake123”. My luck hadn’t completely run out.

I confirmed that which I thought I already knew and researched what I didn’t. I logged into every social media account Tonya had active memberships with: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, even a MySpace page that didn’t look updated since our Bermuda trip in ’08. I studied the pictures and took notes of every perso...

Chapter 74: Reflections

When Michael was little, he would fall down and scrape his knee or bump his head. Tonya would pick him up and gingerly kiss the scratch. She’d ask him if that made it feel better, and he always nodded his head yes. His crying would subside once he gasped for air.

“A boo boo is God’s way of telling us that it’s time to take a break,” she would tell him. He would cling to her. She would hold him tight. They’d eventually sit down and quietly look at a book.

I ran through my internal library of mem...

Chapter 73: Here and Now

Greg drove me to Eddy’s safe house. As it turns out, Eddy’s mom was a nurse, and he brought her to dress the burns that covered the majority of my torso. I had also picked up a few gashes that I hadn’t realized so she stitched me up. She didn’t have any anesthetic aside from some aloe vera with lidocaine so everything she did hurt like hell. I cried like a baby as she worked, nearly passing out a few times from the pain. Greg couldn’t watch. Eddy held my hand as I bore down.

“It’s like this, O...
