John Deere Classic Fantasy Preview

Welcome to the Midwest, gamers. The people are friendly and there isn’t much to look at during the drive in. The main attraction this week is being held in Silvis, Illinois. It’s just across the Iowa border, and also not too far from that cheese state up north.

The course is TPC Deere Run. It’s an average-length par 71 track with easy fairways and large bentgrass greens. Midwestern guys have dominated this event over the past decade, Stricker winning three times, ZJ winning the year after, and Jerry Kelly always in the mix as well.

The initial thought with large fairways is to ignore accuracy but that’s not the case this week. This course is easy by PGA TOUR standards but there is still plenty of trouble to get into if you spray the ball off the tee. Guys that are dialed in will be hitting 80%+ fairways and that means over 55 chances for stick it close this week. Some of the less-accurate guys will have to be perfect with the birdie opps if they want to keep up. Target accuracy over distance this week.

Players to Watch

Zach Johnson horse for course at ColonialZach Johnson … He arrives with the best mixture of form and course history of anyone in the field this week. The Iowa native has finished on the podium in five of his last six trips here. The tournament means a lot to him, having grown up just across the state border. He’s the man to beat this week.

Jordan Spieth… He’s paying his dues to the JDC for allowing him the opportunity to breakout on the PGA TOUR. This venue will always mean a lot to him, and he will continue to get criticized for playing it the week ahead of the Open Championship. Unless he proves the haters wrong and wins next week. Anything is possible with this kid.

Jerry Kelly… A Madison, WI guy, you’ve got to trust his course history here due to local ties. Trust Kelly on easy courses.

Kevin Chappell… He’s blown off the talks of any mid-season slump and he’s now back in the groove. Long-time gamers know Chappy has the propensity to go realllly low. He is 2-for-2 here but hasn’t posted that really low round…yet. I wouldn’t be shocked to see a 63 or 64 from KC this week on his way to a top 25.

Tony Finau… It’s time to back off on Finau for a week. He’s in full cruise mode over the last two months but this track doesn’t set up well for him. Stats like Driving distance, 300+ yard drives, clubhead speed, etc. all have negative correlation with success here at TPC Deere Run. It’s not a course you can overpower. On the bright side, they have received a lot of rain this week and we should expect less roll on the fairways. Even with that slight advantage, I still don’t think it’s necessary to take a risk on bombers this week.

20/20 Club… After a few weeks of nothing in the 20/20 club, we have three members this week! Zach Johnson is the obvious member as he’s gained 56.96 strokes at this venue over his past 20 rounds while gaining 27.89 strokes over the field in his last 20 rounds entering the week. Next on the list is Jordan Spieth as his course/form splits are 22.96 and 40.01. Lastly, we have Scott Brown who has gained the third most strokes at TPC Deere Run since 2010, 26.95. Over the last eight weeks of stroke-play events he has also racked up 27.22 strokes gained in 26 rounds.

Hudson Swafford… He comes with some risk, but this venue sets up perfectly for his strengths. He prefers courses where the fairways are easy to hit and easy in general. We’ve heard about his pedigree for a few years now, and it’s about time for him to show that at the main stage.

Brendon de Jonge… He’s a little out of form, but nothing extreme. He is the weekly wife pick and one of the safest cash-game options IMO as he loves himself a good shootout.

Justin Thomas… So much potential, but I really can’t trust him just days after a back-nine Sunday meltdown with the putter. He four-putted from inside 15 feet! That’s not someone I want to back in a shootout where the putter needs to stay hot all week.

Steve Stricker…. This is the John Deere Classic, but can we really trust his current form? I lean towards no but I won’t be completely fading him due impeccable course history. If he busts this week, it will be a long time before we have to seriously consider drafting Stricks again.

Steven Bowditch … He’s posted back-to-back top 15s at the JDC and arrives in great form…but it’s still Steven Bowditch. He squeaks into my top 20 this week, but I can’t say I’m thrilled about it.

Johnson Wagner… Looking at all the possible angles this week, Wagner continues to stick out. He’s better on easy coruses, he’s better with easy fairways and greens, he’s better against weak fields, he’s better on par 71s, he’s better on bentgrass. That being said, we still can’t trust Wags at this point in his career. He does make for an interesting WILDCARD though.

John Deere Cheatsheet… Head over to Daily Fantasy Solutions and grab this week’s DraftKings cheatsheet for just five bucks. This includes guys that fit the stat profile, golfers that are in good form, course history, recommended cash game targets and more! I love hearing about the success people are having with the weekly DraftKings cheatsheet so check it out!

John Deere Classic DraftKings Picks

Want to try DraftKings? They are running a free MLB contest Wednesday, July 8th, giving away $5,000 in prizes. The top 3,000 entries win money, so it’s definitely a good introduction to DraftKings. After you win the freeroll, you can hop into this week’s PGA contests…

The first PGA Contest you can enter is the Future of Fantasy Golf Tour contest. Comment below if you need an invite. It’s a good warmup for next week’s Open Championship. There are prizes awarded throughout the year, so keep piling up those FoF Tour points! Now let’s see what we can piece together this week on DraftKings.

Form Fitting

Tony Finau ($8500)… 13th-25th-14th-8th-10th-19th-16th

Kevin Kisner ($10700)… 2nd-12th-8th-5th-38th

Scott Brown ($8600)… 37th54th-12th-72nd-34th-33rd-13th

Jason Bohn ($8400)… 13th-73rd-29th-52nd-2nd-9th

Will Wilcox ($6400)… 79th-73rd-12th-22nd

Jon Curran ($7300)… 143rd-10th-53rd-6th-33rd-81st

What is the correct route to take when setting up a daily fantasy golf roster? Form or History? Form often overrides course history, so this team is taking that approach. Curran and Wilcox may have a few MCs in there, but their top finishes make up for that, given their prices. Who else is in good form entering the John Deere Classic, how about Jordan Spieth, Robert Streb, George McNeill, Zach Johnson, Steven Bowditch, or Brian Harman.

Course Horse-tory

Zach Johnson ($11400)… 2nd-2nd-1st-3rd-21st-2nd-69th

Steve Stricker ($9300)… 11th-10th-5th-1st-1st-1st

Brendon de Jonge ($7500)… 45th-54th-19th-7th-7th-122nd

Tim Clark ($6700)… 5th-36th-7th-18th

Charles Howell III ($8300)… 23rd-33rd-77th-5th-39th-23rd

Chad Campbell ($6800)… 13th-15th-36th-56th-34th-15th-7th

Is course history more your thing? start with this roster and adjust to your liking. Some other course horses include Jerry Kelly, Scott Brown, and Ryan Moore. Other than that, the consistency really goes out the window in terms of gaining strokes here at TPC Deere Run.

Handpicked Value Plays

Vaughn Taylor ($6,200) … After a near-drowning incident last year, he’s re-prioritized his life and his golf game has returned as a result. He has four top 20s in six starts this season. His track record at TPC Deere Run ain’t too shabby either.

Troy Merritt ($7,100) … His form does not merit a pick this week, but his local ties do. Trust the Midwest guys this week. Merritt grew up in Osage, Iowa, and lists Dubuque, Iowa, as one of his favorite places to visit. That’s not just favorite places to visit IN IOWA, that’s where he likes to visit if he has the choice to travel anywhere… Odd. So far, nine of his 10 career rounds at TPC Deere Run have been better than field average. Gotta like that.

Will Wilcox ($6,400) … Just narrowly missed the cut again last week, but his price plummeted this week, so he’s back on our radar! Wavegod Wilcox is one of the best in Good Drive Percentage which means he hits fairways and when he misses them, he still manages to hit greens in regulation. GIRs = Birdie Opps… A necessity this week in a shootout.

The Greenbrier Classic Fantasy Preview

The PGA TOUR heads to West Virginia this week for the Greenbrier Classic. The course is The Old White TPC. I hope it’s not named after The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia. Those guys are scary.

The course is a par 70 that is pretty average in length. There is the issue of altitude that these golfers will need to deal with. This can be troubling for some of these perfectionists that are used to dialing in irons to within feet of their expected yardages. This gives a leg up to guys that have altitude golf experience, that can stay level-headed after a mis-club, or can scramble their way out of missed greens.

It’s always fun to check out last year’s Fantasy Preview as well as the Fantasy Golfanac.

Players to Watch

Bubba a resident at GreenbrierBubba Watson… He just added another piece of hardware to his ever-growing trophy room. In good news, he owns a house on this week’s resort. In bad news, its near impossible to win back-to-back events. Still a great option in most formats, but an easy fade in DFS formats given his inflated price this week.

Bill Haas… The Old White TPC is a strange one when it comes to course success, but Haas seems to have it figured out. He has gained the most strokes here since it’s inception (29.260 strokes in 16 rounds).

Patrick Reed… He’s pretty low on my rankings (13th) but I like him a little more than that. You don’t HAVE to be a great scrambler to succeed around here but it definitely helps if the altitude starts affecting iron distances, leading to more missed greens than usual. He says he was too focused on all the activities his first time around here at Greenbrier. To me, that sounds like he will be fully focused on golf this week, which is more than we can say about some of these guys who treat this as a Fourth of July family getaway.

Kevin Chappell… He’s quietly found some really good form over the past two months and now arrives at a par-70 track that tests all facets of the game. That’s a recipe for success with this young Chap.

Tony Finau… This guy is a monster…in a good way. He crushes it a mile and can score when he gives himself the chances. The rookie of the year race is getting very interesting as he battles out Berger and Thomas. He will make his course debut, but that hasn’t mattered here in the past. Lock and load.

20/20 Club… Nobody fits the criteria this week of form+History, as we found out last week with Leishman, imitation 20/20 members just won’t do the trick. We will need to wait til next week I suppose.

Graham DeLaet… His price has quickly caught up to normal GDL standards in DFS formats, but I say why not stay on him? He’s got three straight solid performances and seems to have a clean bill of health. Fire away.

Brendon de Jonge… He has gained the most strokes at The Old White TPC of anyone in the field. Sike! Haven’t you been paying attention, that was Billy Haas. The big Zimbabwean is second though, so get back on the train and don’t fear last week’s missed cut.

Robert Streb… A proven winner on TOUR that has rounded back into form after a post-fatherhood slump. You have my permission to reinvest this week. I know I will be.

Will Wilcox… I wasn’t fallin’ for the Wilcox hype last week, but I’m back on board. He finished top five here in his debut.

Justin Thomas… He’s getting put into people’s shitlist with his recent missed cuts, but not my wife’s. He is the weekly wife pick, and she rarely strikes out.

Zac Blair… He posted a recommitment letter to himself on Twitter. Says he was taking things for granted and is about to recommit to his game/life/mindset. That is great to hear for this rookie that has started to slump. If you want to be “that guy” ahead of the curve, take a chance on Blair this week, but it’s probably safest to watch very closely and reinvest if this week goes well.

Greenbrier Cheatsheet… With full transparency the name of the game, I must admit our cash-game lineup tanked last week. Russell Knox and Jerry Kelly did not live up to their salaries. The GPP we gave out won people thousands last week, though. Literally, thousands. So I guess you could file away the Travelers as a GPP type of week. I love hearing about the success people are having with the weekly DraftKings cheatsheet so check it out.

Head over to Daily Fantasy Solutions and grab it for just five bucks. This is includes guys that fit the stat profile, golfers that are in good form, course history, recommended cash game targets and more!

The Greenbrier Classic DraftKings Picks

Happy Fourth of July folks! While these TOUR pros will be enjoying festivities and concerts around the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia, we will be drafting our fantasy golf rosters. DraftKings keeps their game in line with some more massive contests. Let’s have a look at some possible lineups we can put together…

Form Fitting

Tony Finau ($9800)… 25th-14th-8th-10th-19th-16th

Robert Streb ($7400)… 42nd-18th-19th-30th

Scott Brown ($6200)… 54th-12th-72nd-34th-33rd-13th-30th

Jason Bohn ($7400)… 73rd-29th-52nd-2nd-9th-76th

George McNeill ($9900)… 107th-29th-13th-5th-28th-17th

Kevin Na ($9100)… 102nd-46th-13th-10th-6th

This team is swinging well over the past two months. Kisner is THEE top form guy, if you want to completely ignore his horrendous course history. Other than that, take a look at Keegan Bradley, Colt Knost, Steven Bowditch, Rory Sabbatini, Patrick Reed, or Graham DeLaet for other guys in form.

Course Horse-tory

Bill Haas ($10500)… 23rd-9th-33rd-2nd

Jeff Overton ($6800)… 59th-17th-49th-2nd

Brendon de Jonge ($7800)… 64th-17th-52nd-4th-3rd

Scott Stallings ($6600)… 35th-23rd-56th-1st

Graham DeLaet ($10600)… 30th-12th-45th

Chris Stroud ($7400)… 4th-122nd-18th-9th

The Old White TPC has brought us some bizarre winners, but there are plenty of guys that consistently do well. I’m not putting huge weights on course history but it’s definitely worth having a look. Other course history golfers include: Pat Perez, Carl Pettersson, Charlie Beljan, Jonas Blixt, Steven Bowditch, Andres Romero, and George McNeill.

Handpicked Value Plays

Andres Romero ($6,000) … When you are THEE Par 70 specialist, you garner attention, especially when you get this bargain-bin salary. Finished top 5 here in his debut and is 2-for-3 since. If you look at his native Yerba Buena, Argentina, it’s elevation is nearly identical as this week in White Sulphur Springs. That’s could be key as many other golfers in the field will be out of their element trying to dial in their approach shots.

Daniel Summerhays ($6,700) … He was a lock in our cash-game lineups for most of the first half of the season. He’s faded as of late, but this course should get him back on track. Like I mentioned with Romero, elevation will be no problem for this Utah native. His course history backs that up as he owns a pair of top 10s in four trips here.

Brendon de Jonge ($7,800) … A missed cut last week will deter many gamers, but it really means it’s time to pounce! The Zimbawean loves it here, gaining 28.217 strokes here in 20 rounds. Of those 20 rounds, six of them have been 4+ strokes over the field. Talk about high upside. It’s starting to sound like a broken record, but he really has to reach the winner’s circle soon. It doesn’t hurt that he picks up a few Hokie fans at this event with Va Tech being just three hours away.

Travelers Championship Fantasy Preview

It’s road trip time! After hanging out at Chambers Bay last week, let’s hitchhike to Cromwell, Connecticut, for this week’s Travelers Championship. It’s just 2,974 miles away, an easy 44 hour drive. You’ll drive through about 10 states along the way, including the scenic North Dakota.

The course this week is TPC River Highlands, one of the shortest on TOUR. It’s just a par 70 track, so less emphasis on par 5s this week. The fairways and greens are generous, but pin placements force you to get aggressive, leading to a lot of short-sided chips.

That’s one of the main reasons great scramblers like Freddie Jack and Chris Stroud have excelled here in the past. Great ball-striking is another route as the greens are not difficult to putt, it’s just a matter of giving yourself birdie opps. Distance can be helpful, but not necessary. It will just mean wedge into many greens instead of 7-or-8-irons. Not a huge difference for most of these TOUR pros.

Travelers Trends

-The last 10 winners had at least one top 25 in the five starts leading up to the Travelers. Form isn’t huge, but they shouldn’t be completely lost.

-The last 10 winners have all played TPC River Highlands at least once prior to their win. Avoid course debutants if you’re looking for a winner. Sorry Tony Finau.

-The last 10 winners had all made at least one cut in their three previous Travelers starts leading up to the win. It’s hard to jump from failure to the winner’s circle. Sorry Brendon Todd. Having some recent success at TPC River Highlands is key.

Head over to the Fantasy Golfanac or last year’s Travelers Preview for more stats and trends on this event.

Players to Watch

Sergio Garcia a top contender this weekSergio Garcia… He talks himself out of majors before the tournaments even being but regular TOUR events are a different story. He’s posted top 10s in half of his starts since 2013-14 season began. Ride his consistent play to the winner’s circle this week.

Billy Horschel… He’s hot which means you keep riding him…This has been in my article for three weeks straight now.

Zach Johnson… He’s got one of the best strike-rates in the field so he can’t be ignored entirely. At the same time, his last 14 rounds at TPC River Highlands have yielded seven rounds better than the field, while the same amount being worse than the field. That’s not the kind of consistency we’re looking for in a top priced player. There is a very good chance he finds himself hovering around the cut line this week.

Andres Romero… He’s a par 70 specialist so it’s no surprise to his a top 10 on his resume here. Give the Argentine a look if you need a deep sleeper. Perhaps he was inspired by his fellow countryman, Fabian Gomez as he rattled off a top 15 at Chambers Bay last week.

Bubba Watson… He won his first TOUR event at this event and said he would never miss it again unless it was for injury reasons. For a golfer relies on his emotions so heavily, that is encouraging and we should proceed with confidence this week.

Kevin Streelman… I highlighted him in my preview last year and look what he did. I said he was very, very sneaky last year. That’s not the case this year as he’s now defending champion. His love for the course remains the same, so give him a look but don’t get carried away.

20/20 Club… Nobody fits the criteria this week of form+History, but Marc Leishman is the closest. He’s gained 25.07 strokes at TPC River Highlands over the past five years and also gained 19.66 strokes over the last 8 stroke-play events. Soooo close.

Graham DeLaet… His course history here is actually pretty mediocre but he does have a third-place finish to his name. What’s more important is his attitude as he’s declared this the most fun course on TOUR. Thats probably due to the fact that poor putters can get hot and contend here. That’s what we like to hear when it comes to DeLaet!

John Merrick… He’s a top-30 machine at TPC River Highlands and has also found some form lately after a poor start to 2014-15.

Nick Watney… Last week had to be a wake-up call for Watts as it was the first time not qualifying for the U.S. Open since 2006. I’m not hearing a lot of talk surrounding him this week but he has sneaky good course history. In fact, he owns four top 15s in six tries. That’s not even sneaky, that’s flat out great course history.

Brendan Steele… Much like Watney above, the Man of Steele is out of the good graces of gamers but he sports tremendous course history. Three top 15s in four tries. I like it.

Justin Thomas… He’s getting overshadowed by Tony Finau lately when it comes to youngsters but Thomas is the one to target this week. He teed it up here as an amateur and finished T30. Two years later, he’s even better and has that winner’s glare in his eyes. This could be the week.

Travelers Cheatsheet… We swept the board with our cash-game lineup last week. I love hearing about the success people are having with the weekly DraftKings cheatsheet so check it out.

Head over to Daily Fantasy Solutions and grab it for just five bucks. This is includes guys that fit the stat profile, golfers that are in good form, course history, recommended cash game targets and more!

Travelers Championship DraftKings Picks

What a week that was at Chambers Bay! There was drama all week in regards to the course setup and also on the leaderboard. In the Future of Fantasy Golf Tour contest, bgmula1 took home the trophy and won himself a dozen golf balls. Shoot me an email at futureoffantasy@gmail.com or comment below with your email for your options.

This week we head across the country to the Northeast. The tournament is the Travelers Championship. Full preview will come tomorrow like always, but let’s take a quick look at DraftKings first. The feature event on DK this week is the Drive the Green contest. It’s just $3 to enter but the winner walks away with $100K. Check it out

Form Fitting

Jerry Kelly ($7100)… MC-30th-10th-17th

Kevin Na ($7100)… 46th-13th-10th-6th

Russell Knox ($8400)… 8th-18th-24th-58th

Zach Johnson ($9100)… 72nd-5th-19th-13th

Marc Leishman ($9700)… MC-5th-MC-27th

Jim Herman ($6100)… 40th-73rd-33rd-13th

We don’t need to look much into last week’s results when it comes to guys like ZJ, Na, and Leishman. It was extremely difficult conditions and not suited for everyone. I think they will enjoy a return to normalcy this week with a much easier test of golf. Others to consider in good form include: Brandt Snedeker, Keegan Bradley, Patrick Reed, Justin Thomas, Colt Knost, Danny Lee, and Sergio.

Course Horse-tory

Bubba Watson ($11800)… 31st-4th-2nd-38th-1st-14th-6th

John Merrick ($7000)… 26th-30th-71st-9th-34th-11th

Brendon de Jonge ($7800)… 42nd-63rd-8th-86th-9th-34th

Jerry Kelly ($7100)… 31st-24th-37th-38th-63rd-70th-84th

Vijay Singh ($6600)… 31st-43rd-37th-43rd-13th-51st-5th

Marc Leishman ($9700)… 11th-30th-1st-70th

TPC River Highlands has been kind to first-timers as Bubba and Leishman both made this team and also made this event their maiden. Some like de Jonge could certainly fall in their tracks. Other course horses to ponder include: Chris Stroud, Brian Davis, Aaron Baddeley, Kevin Streelman, Brendon de Jonge, and Ken Duke.

Handpicked Value Plays

Jerry Kelly ($7,100) … When short courses arrive on the schedule, you have to immediately check the field list for Jerry Kelly. Over the past two years he’s gained 1.077 strokes over the field, per round, when playing on courses less than 7,100 yards. That just happens to be his price this week also…It’s a sign.

Russell Knox ($8,400) … I don’t usually list guys this high as “value plays” but Knox breaks that mold. Any way you slice it this week, the Scot appears on your radar. He’s a great statistical fit, he owns a top 15 here at TPC River Highlands, and arrives in top form. Nobody is hitting it better tee-to-green than Knox and this really could be the week he grabs that long awaited maiden.

Blake Adams ($5,800) … With Knox being a little pricier than most value plays, I thought I may need a salary saver, as well. Adams fits that bill. He’s not in top form since returning to action this year, but his T11 at the Heritage is enough to give me hope. When asked about whether he likes TPC River Highlands he had this to say, “Absolutely. It’s a nice layout for me. I like it. It’s a laid-back atmosphere, kind of like I am, and go and just make birdies.” … He has two top 30s in three tries here, so I am willing to give it another go for this price.
