Club Med And A Crochet Swimsuit

Screen Shot 2013-04-24 at 9.35.07 AM

We booked a vacation. It was directly inspired by my 2013 recap, in which I posted the above photo and realized just how very much I wanted to be in that exact spot right this very moment.

We weren’t planning on going on a trip this year (other than possibly heading to Maine for a few days this summer), because Kendrick’s in school (and he’s going to India – !! – as part of his program during the spring semester)…but the weather broke me.

I am broken.

I need a Club Med to fix me.

Here’s the thing...

Mixed Reviews And Mild Emotional Trauma

Here are two facts about winter sports of which I am absolutely certain:

1. You (or at least I) never, ever dress warmly enough;

2. That last run is always (always) a bad idea.

When I was a kid, I was very into winter sports. I was a competitive figure skater(above; I loved that dress) starting at four years old, my first crush was on a ski instructor who told me in passing that I had cute ears (which resulted in my not wearing earmuffs for the remainder of my trip; a poor idea that I have to as...

It’s Raining, It’s Pouring (So Let’s Talk Stylish Umbrellas)

I was so confused when my son woke me up this morning (with the usual request: “MAMA. ORANGE JUICE”).

He’s generally pretty good about sleeping until the sun is up – which is good in the winter, not so good in the summer (blackout curtains are on my to-be-purchased list) – but this morning I heard the orange juice announcement when it was still pitch-black outside.

As it turned out, it was 7:17a.m., and he was right on schedule. And it wasn’t pitch-black outside, technically. Justgross.

Ick, tod...

In The Salon

WhenI first found our Alice In Wonderland house online, years before we actually bought it, I sent screenshots over to Francesca, and while we tried to figure out a way for me to buy it we developed elaborate fantasies about how the house would become a sort of creative salon-in-the-woods, with friends staying over and making music late into the night. We pictured glamorous outfits and fairy lights and clinking glasses; aged cheese and good wine and watching the sun come up while someone bang...

Can’t stop eating this lasagna. (Recipe coming up on RG next week.)

I spent the holidays binge-watching the entirety of Orange Is The New Black. It is so good. I may try to get intoHomelandnext if I can get past the fact that it looks incredibly boring (I know, I know: it isn’t. It justlooksboring).

I have recently rediscovered the joy that is an old-school daily planner sitting right there next to your computer with an excellent pen. (This is the planner I bought – pictured above – and it’s per...

The Most Beautiful Bag In The World

PicMonkey-Collage48-e1353193196618

I have a lot of bags. I’m OK with that; they’re kind of my thing. I love them.

But this bag? This is actually my favorite bag in the world. For real. I first saw it way back in 2012, when it was released as a limited-edition collaboration between Coach and Anna Sui, declared “That is my favorite bag in the world,” and have held fast to that opinion in the many, many months that have transpired between then and now.

Dinner Suggestion: Breakfast After Dark

breakfast for dinner

I am not hungover today.

This is nice.

I do, however, (still) have a head cold, which is basically the same thing.

And so for our New Year’s Feast, Part I (there were three parts, and the other two consisted of brownies and lasagna) I made Kendrick, Francesca, Indy and myself my go-to New Year’s Day meal: Potato-Avocado Hash with Eggs.

It is so good, and so exactly what you want to eat when you’re not feeling quite right.

(It’s also pretty much a perfect dinner-for-one, especially eaten all mushed...

2013: Year In Review

You know how your twenties (or my twenties, at least) can feel like you’re “waiting for something to start”? Like you don’t know what your Actual Life will end up looking like, but you know (or hope) that it won’t look like what you’re living right then? In 2010 I was still grasping around, looking for threads of what I wanted my future to be, and – let’s be honest – being a bit of a mess, which is a job in itself. In 2011, we had a baby, and in 2012, we moved.

And in 2013, it felt like my Act...

My Father-In-Law’s (Seemingly) Effortless Apple Crisp

apple crisp

My father-in-law is one of those people who will appear to be doing nothing more labor-intensive than puttering around in the kitchen, moving a bowl over here and a carton of milk over there…and will then all of a sudden sail over to the table carrying a tray of expertly baked goods. And then he’ll whip up some from-scratch icing in the time it ordinarily takes me to locate a fork. And then the bowls go ahead and clean themselves. Or that’s what it seems like, anyway, because I never see him...
