The Loveliest Date Night, And What Happened to my Legs

I love going to movies. Especially alone, and especially during the day, and most especially alone during the day to see a horror movie (hush, it’s a common trauma response; you can look it up). When the theaters tentatively reopened after Covid calmed down, I ran straight there — but, if we’re being totally honest, it wasn’t exactly because of the movies themselves.

It was because my favorite food was – and is – movie theater popcorn with extra butter and extra salt (yes, really, and I appr...

Hash Brown Breakfast Pizza

I discovered breakfast pizza when I was a brand-new mom living on the Upper East Side in New York City. There was this little Italian place across the street, and we had a lovely system wherein I’d get to sit down with a mimosa and peruse the menu while my ex walked the baby around (and around and around) the block trying to get him to pass out so that we could have something resembling a conversation.

(On occasion, it even worked. Hand availability for pizza consumption optional.)

Sparkles For Days

Disco Balls | Solar Rainbow Catcher

Video of my office (with oh god, so many sparkles) here

I think I dreamed of this room a long, long time ago.

Before we begin, here’s a reader question that I receive on the regular: What is making all those little rainbows in your office?!

Answer: A combination of $5 disco balls from Five Below, various crystals I’ve found at thrift stores and whatnot over the years, and – importantly – this absolute home essential. Buy one. You will love ...

The Cringiest

I don’t have too many opinions about the royals. Obviously I had a crush on William in my teens, and then transferred said crush to Harry in my twenties (pre-Nazi-cosplay), and I followed the breakup of the royal family with mild interest, but…eh. It’s always just seemed like a whole lot of Rich People Nonsense to me. My feelings about Meghan hover on the negative side of neutral, but I also recognize that I’m probably being unduly influenced by various forms of social media-amplified racism and...

See Ya, I’m Out

There are experiences in life that you just assume you’ll get around to having one day…but the day slips away, and more days pass, and all of a sudden you’re 43 years old, divorced and perimenopausal, and haven’t been to Europe in over two decades.

I lived in London, actually, a long time ago – I enrolled at University College London, in Camden, during my junior year of college. During breaks my friends and I traveled to the coast of Spain and the Greek islands, and I went on an ill-advi...

Tiny Fantastic Discoveries

Splits59 River Airweight Stirrup Leggings. Never did I ever think stirrup pants would be a part of my life, but consider me schooled. I bought these on the recommendation of my friend Kim…and then immediately bought another pair, because they’re that good.

The leggings on vacation in Carmel, with Jeffrey Campbell boots + Pilcro denim jacket

Incredibly soft and lightweight, and confusingly chic and versatile (I’ve been wearing them with sneakers, moto boots, even sparkly heels). Hig...

Reader Question: Introducing A New Partner to the Kids

how to introduce a new partner to your kids

I wrote this post with one hand 😉

Q. Any tips on introducing children to your new partner? I have never done it and I’m in a serious relationship after six years separated/divorced. My kids have never met anyone I’ve dated. It’s kind of a big deal. Any thoughts on how to do this the right way? My kids are 7 and 10, and his are 12, 15 and 18.

I love this question, because it’s (obviously) one I’ve struggled with considerably over the years. And were Mistakes Made? Oh yes, my friend....

A Holiday Bottle Spell For Your BFFs

Tarot contributor Jessica creates a spell for you and your best friends to celebrate each other and remind you that grand, lifelong love comes in all forms.

Three ladies, glasses raised, dancing together…You don’t need me to tell you that there’s a party going on here. The Three of Cups is a picture of celebration, of communion. This is a card about sharing joy with friends.

Let’s go a little bit deeper. Cups are the suit of emotion, and in Tarot, groups of three represent a firm foundation. S...

Hard Things

Election Day, 2016

Last night I went to sleep at midnight, already knowing what I’d wake up to. But then I did some 2am doomscrolling to confirm that yes, that thing I hadn’t thought was possible actually…was. Again.

I was laying there in the dark, staring at my phone, when the whole world went even darker, and even silenter. My fan cut out; the clocks went blank; the streetlights blinked off.

Today, the power is out in Malibu and much of the surrounding area. There’s a fire by my ...

Five Things

We’re going to talk more about these jeans in a minute

IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR. #sweaterweather

You know how California isn’t know for its seasons? Well, here – in this little mountaintop community where I’ve found myself – we have them (!!). The trees around my house are turning colors that might not be quite New England level, but beggars, choosers, etc.

Rain: It happens! A little too much, actually! I have to layer on a big coat to get the kids in the car, and b...
