Sometimes A Thing Is Just Perfect

vintage charm pyrex

You know those things in your house that are, very simply and for no especially good reason, your favorites? Your favorite blanket, your favorite mug, your favorite pair of underwear for when no one but you is going to see it (just me?).

I would venture that each and every one of us has a favorite bowl. The one that, should it be clean, we would automatically choose for anything from ice cream to cereal to pasta. Francesca, for example, has a favorite bowl. It happens to be one I gave he...

Crunchy Chicken Salad with Soy-Ginger Dressing

I’ve been making this salad – originally introduced to me in the pre-RG days by my friend Morgan – for years. It was one of our weekly staples, and then I completely forgot about it. For…mmm…a decade? Enter: A longtime reader, Krissy, who said that she could no longer find the recipe on my site, and asked if I’d repost.

I’ll do better than that: I’ll re-shoot! Because it makes for an excellent excuse to, you know, make Crunchy Chicken Salad.

(My daughter says she “doesn’t like salad.”...

Some Kind Of Wonderful

College me, being college-y (the Hornitos tequila is somewhere in there, I guarantee you)

When I applied to college, I obviously agonized over the application essay. I thought of writing about my grandfather, a Communist organizer during the McCarthy period whom I hadn’t ever really understood, and who had recently died. I thought of writing about teaching English to kids in Costa Rica, and what it feels like to fall in love with a place and its people and its language. I thought of writi...

Before and After: White and Wood Kitchen

These are all befores.

I have always wondered how adult humans do things like renovate kitchens. I’ve had kitchens! Owned them, even! The first one was beyond quirky but I loved it and I did exactly nothing to it, because it hadn’t yet occurred to me how one might go about renovating a kitchen were one not, say, a Getty or similar (the answer is that you take out a home equity line of credit, but nobody, apparently, learns things like this in school; I had never even heard of such a...

Diamonds in the Light

It’s me, hi.

Did you know that being a single mother to two children in one of the most expensive cities in the world is very, very difficult?

I have to put a bunch of caveats here so as to minimize the trolling: Yes, I am aware that it was my decision to relocate. Yes, I am aware that I am #blessed with a stellar education and a solid skill set, albeit not one that has ever felt like it’s brought with it tremendous security (and YES, I know it was me who made the decision to disrega...

New Favorite Room: Brinjal Bathroom (Before and After)

Jordan Reid ramshackle glam

Me, being just a tiny bit impulsive

There have been times in my life when I’ve thought things through before doing them. Not many, but it has happened.

This was not one of those times.

When we moved in, I *kinda* redid this bathroom because I absolutely could not bear it, between the ancient tub situation and the 1980s (but not in a good way) tiling. I had the floor sanded down, painted the walls, and swapped out the lighting and accessories.

Eh.

And it was fine. But not great. So I bought one...

My Fantastic Date

Jordan Reid podcast interview

This interview was a pretty great one.

(I did not, alas, go on a date with either of these lovely women.)

I went on a fantastic date the other night. Let me set the scene: The restaurant was spectacular, overlooking the ocean and the setting sun. The guy was age-appropriate, cute, smart and interesting. He wasn’t in the entertainment industry (!), and was well versed in politics and journalism. We even knew people in common! Good ones!

I wore my new OTK cowboy boots because I am of the firm op...

What To Do With Such A Flock of Fungi?!

how to prepare chanterelle mushrooms

Hello, enormous darlings!

I begin this tale with a miniature story, which shall lead into a caveat. First, the story: Yesterday afternoon, a dear friend gave me a little “surprise and delight” moment when he appeared on my doorstep holding a basket of chanterelle mushrooms the size of footballs. Apparently, he had foraged them just the day before. (Side note: The things that happen when you live in the mountains! Never have I ever had a basket of…well, anything delivered to my door.)

Now, the ...

OK, so this is basically just stuff I covet. But if you generally enjoy my recommendations, they’ll likely be up your alley, too.
