You Can’t Out-Give God

“Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”

Luke 6:38 (NLT)

When you give from a heart for Jesus, your goal isn’t to get a blessing. But the truth is that God will bless you.

You can’t out-give God. When you learn to be generous like God is generous, he promises that you will end up with more. This is the economy of God.

Sometimes it seems like God is saying: “Let’s see who can out-give the other. You give to me and to other people, and I’ll give to you—and we’ll see who wins.”

And God always wins! He says over and over in Scripture that you will end up with more if you learn to be generous. Sometimes those blessings will be material. But sometimes they’ll be the spiritual blessings that come from a generous heart.

Jesus says, “Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back” (Luke 6:38 NLT).

What is Jesus saying here? Imagine you’re going to a market to buy grain. You bring a burlap sack and pay to have the whole sack filled. As the shop owner is pouring grain, you press it into your sack. Then you gently shake the sack so the grain settles down even more. You want to fit the maximum amount of grain.

Jesus is saying that God’s blessings are the same. When you give generously, he’ll give so generously that you’ll have to make room for more.

He gives in full measure—and then some—when you learn to be generous like him. The way you give to others is the way God will give to you. He wants you to be generous because he wants you to be like him. You can’t become more like Christ without learning to give generously.

This is one of the most important decisions you will make: Is your life going to be about giving away what God has blessed you with? Will it be marked by a joyous desire to grab hold of God’s promises as you let go of the things of this earth?

“The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.” You determine how much God blesses your life.

Una Fe Secreta es una Fe Superficial

“—¿Qué quieres que haga por ti? —preguntó Jesús. —Mi Rabí —dijo el hombre ciego—, ¡quiero ver!”.  Marcos 10:51 (NTV)

¡Haz públicas tus metas en la vida! Anuncia tu intención, el cambio que deseas hacer en tu vida, lo que le estás pidiendo a Dios que haga. Aclara lo que realmente quieres y luego decláralo públicamente. Necesitas decírselo a todo el mundo, porque una fe secreta es una fe superficial.

Marcos 10:51 dice: “—¿Qué quieres que haga por ti? —preguntó Jesús. —Mi Rabí —dijo el hombre ciego—, ¡quiero ver!”.

Pregunta: ¿Por qué Jesús le preguntó esto? Él camina hacia un mendigo ciego que está sentado en el suelo por el camino y le pregunta, “¿Qué te gustaría que yo hiciera por ti?” ¿No sabía ya lo que necesitaba el hombre? ¿No podía Jesús leer su mente? ¿No sabía cuál era el problema del individuo? Por supuesto que si. Entonces ¿por qué Jesús lo mira y le pregunta, “¿Qué quieres que haga por ti?”.

Lo estaba haciendo para beneficio de Bartimeo. Con esa pregunta, Él permitió que Bartimeo anunciara públicamente su fe. Bartimeo dijo: “¡Quiero que me sanes!” No le pides a un hombre que te sane, a menos que creas y tengas fe en que Él puede hacerlo. Bartimeo estaba diciendo que creía que Jesús era quien dijo que era, que Jesús tenía el poder de cambiarlo, y que Jesús haría exactamente eso. Fue una declaración de fe.

Aquí está lo increíble. Jesús te hace ahora mismo la misma pregunta: “¿Qué quieres que haga por ti?” Él te lo pregunta todos los días, cada mañana. Si Jesucristo viniera a ti ahora mismo y te lo preguntara, ¿cómo responderías? Dios quiere usarte. Él quiere bendecirte. Él quiere hacer cosas increíbles en tu vida. Pero tienes que pedirlo en fe.

¿Sabías que cada vez que estableces una meta, es realmente una declaración de fe? Hay una clasificación: cuando se establece una meta y dices, “Voy a hacer ‘esto’ con mi vida”, necesitas agregar la frase “si es la voluntad de Dios”, porque tú no conoces el futuro.

Así que anuncias tu meta públicamente. Entre más gente la conozca, más apoyo, ánimo, oración y rendición de cuentas vas a tener.

Your Weaknesses Shape Your Witness to the World

“I want you to know, my dear brothers and sisters, that everything that has happened to me here has helped to spread the Good News.”

Philippians 1:12 (NLT)

Your witness to the world will come out of your weaknesses, not your strengths.

A lot of people have it backwards: They think the world is impressed by Christians’ prosperity. That doesn’t impress the world. They see that everywhere! What impresses non-believers is how believers handle adversity, not prosperity.

Your suffering, not your success, gives you credibility. Your faithfulness, not your fame, earns respect.

The apostle Paul was a pro at using his pain as a witness. He wrote from a prison dungeon in Rome, “I want you to know, my dear brothers and sisters, that everything that has happened to me here has helped to spread the Good News” (Philippians 1:12 NLT).

Paul used his pain to model the message God had given him. While he was chained in prison, he wrote letters to the church that became part of the New Testament.

Paul said, “In everything we do, we show that we are true ministers of God” (2 Corinthians 6:4 NLT). That includes how you handle pain, failure, defeat, problems, mistakes, sin, and all of the bad things that happen in your life.

It doesn’t take God’s power to handle good; anybody can handle good. It takes God’s power to patiently endure.

The world doesn’t have a good answer for how to endure. But followers of Christ patiently endure suffering, hardship, and trouble of every kind as it’s a way to bear witness to the Good News of Jesus.

Your deepest ministry will come out of your deepest hurt—and your deepest life message will come out of your deepest pain.

In every area of your life where you’ve had pain, you have a testimony. How will you use it to help bring others from despair to fullness of life in Christ?

Elige la Fe por encima del Temor

“Muchos lo reprendían para que se callara, pero él se puso a gritar aún más: ―¡Hijo de David, ten compasión de mí!”. Marcos 10:48 (NVI)

Si vas a tener un nuevo comienzo, comienza con fe en tu vida, tienes que enfrentar tus temores. ¡No dejes que te controlen! El temor tiene la increíble habilidad de paralizar tu potencial, de evitar que despeguemos, de evitar que tengamos fe en nuestra vida.

Cuando elegimos el temor sobre la fe, nos hace escépticos —tenemos temor de intentar algo nuevo. Nos hace egoístas —estamos temerosos de comprometernos con Dios y con otros. Nos impide tener visión —nos enfocamos en el pasado y no en el futuro.

Bartimeo, el hombre ciego que Jesús encontró en Marcos 10, enfrentó un temor que es familiar a muchos de nosotros: El temor al rechazo. Él sabía que gritarle a Jesús en medio de esa multitud no era lo correcto. Él sabía que las personas voltearían a verlo por ello, pero estaba desesperado. Y él sabía que Jesucristo era el único que podía ayudarlo.

Y mira lo que sucedió: Cuando llamó a Jesús, todos a su alrededor le dijeron: “No hagas eso, cállate, no hagas una escena. Seguramente Jesucristo no está interesado en ti. Él tiene cosas más importantes que hacer”.

El diablo susurra cosas como esas a muchos de nosotros. Cuando esa oportunidad de fe viene a nuestro corazón, vienen pensamientos como “Dios seguramente no estará interesado en ti” y “no hagas una escena” y “¿qué pensará la gente de ti?” Todos estos pensamientos evitan que tengamos fe. Cuando veas una oportunidad para cambiar, hay todo tipo de voces internas y externas que te dirán que no te muevas.

Pero Dios te está pidiendo que hagas algo más grande de lo que has hecho: Él te está pidiendo que dependas de Él completamente. ¿Eso parecería un poco aterrador? Pero cuando Dios nos pide algo a nosotros, tú y yo tenemos una elección: podemos quedarnos con nuestros temores y ser quienes somos o podemos superar nuestros temores y dar el paso de fe. Dios siempre está esperando encontrarnos del otro lado de cualquier paso de fe.

The Best Use of Your Deepest Pain

“[God] comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ.”

2 Corinthians 1:4-5 (NLT)

When you’re going through pain, you can choose to focus on yourself or on other people. When you choose to focus on serving other hurting people, that’s called redemptive suffering. It is the highest and best use of your pain.

No matter what pain you’ve gone through, Jesus wants to redeem your suffering. He doesn’t want it to be wasted! He wants to use it to help other people when they are in pain.

“[God] comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ” (2 Corinthians 1:4-5 NLT).

Who’s better qualified to help a struggling veteran than somebody who’s been a struggling veteran? Who’s better qualified to help someone recovering from a prescription drug addiction than somebody who has recovered from a prescription drug addiction? Who could better help someone who is suffering from a chronic illness than someone who has also suffered in the same way?

Your greatest ministry will come out of your deepest pain. If you’ll be honest with God, others, and yourself about whatever struggle you’ve faced, then that struggle will become your ministry.

Sharing your strengths doesn’t make you feel any closer to someone. But when you share the experiences that have led you to surrender to God and rely on his strength, then you’ll be connected to others more deeply than you can imagine. Why? Because when you—as a broken person—share with other broken people how God has restored you, you’re not just sharing something you have in common. You’re sharing hope that other people can also experience redemption through Jesus Christ.

Sharing your pain helps you and the people around you to grow in Christ. Using your pain to serve others is a form of ministry.

Don’t waste your pain. Let God use it for your greatest ministry.

Deja que Dios te Diga que Dar

“Honra al Señor con tus riquezas y con lo mejor de todo lo que produces.

 Entonces él llenará tus graneros, y tus tinajas se desbordarán de buen vino”. Proverbios 3:9-10 (NTV)

Cuando te conviertes en una persona de fe, aprendes a dar de acuerdo con lo que Dios te dice que des. No dejes que otros te presionen o te manipulen o te “acusen” sobre el dar. Al mismo tiempo, no te límites cuando das, diciendo “esto es lo que creo que puedo dar razonablemente”. Ese tipo de dádiva no requiere nada de fe.

En vez de eso, podemos preguntar a Dios, “¿qué es lo que quieres dar a través de mí? ¿cuánto quieres que confíe en ti en este caso en particular?” Hay una diferencia entre dar por vista y dar por fe.

Mi esposa, Kay, y yo hemos sido probados de esa manera respecto al dar. Uno de los ejemplos más dramáticos fue cuando reuníamos dinero para construir el primer centro de adoración de la iglesia Saddleback, en 1993. Nos reuníamos en una carpa en ese tiempo, y Dios nos dijo que hiciéramos una ofrenda. Le pedimos a las personas hacer un compromiso de dar por un período de tres años. Así que Kay y yo oramos sobre lo que deberíamos dar, y llegamos a una cantidad que no parecía razonable, basados en nuestros ingresos. Desde nuestra perspectiva, era más de lo que podíamos dar. Pero confiamos en Dios para dar esa cantidad.

Y unos días después estaba leyendo en 1 de Crónicas 29 sobre cómo la gente de Israel dio el equivalente a $752 millones de dólares actuales para construir el templo en Jerusalén. Dios le dijo al Rey David que anunciara su ofrenda públicamente para que todos supieran que él se iba a sacrificar al igual que todos los demás.

Sentí que Dios me estaba diciendo, “Rick, quiero que anuncies tu ofrenda. Será un reto para otros”. Y en realidad no quería hacerlo porque pensaba que las personas entenderían mal mis motivos. Pero Dios me dijo que lo hiciera, y quería que Él diera su bendición a ese edificio, así que lo hice. Me paré en frente de mi iglesia un Domingo y les dije, “yo no sé de dónde llegará el dinero, pero Kay y yo nos comprometemos a dar un gran porcentaje de mi sueldo por los siguientes tres años. Por favor, oren por nosotros”.

Un mes después, estábamos por entrar al fin de semana donde tendríamos una ofrenda especial, y todavía estaba preguntándome como saldría todo. No supe cómo, pero confié en que Dios proveería el dinero de alguna manera. Entonces, el viernes antes de ese fin de semana, recibí una llamada de la compañía de publicaciones Zondervan. Ellos dijeron, “Rick, queremos que escribas un libro y lo llames: Una Iglesia con propósito. Creemos que será un éxito, así que te vamos a mandar un adelanto”. El adelanto era más dinero del que Kay y yo nos habíamos comprometido dar. ¡No puedes dar más que Dios!

Cuando le conté esto a la iglesia unos días después, la congregación saltó de alegría. Las personas estaban saltando y gritando, bailando y cantando. Personas estaban llorando. Yo estaba llorando; Kay estaba llorando. Fue una de las más grandes experiencias de mi vida. Y casi me la pierdo por mi terquedad (todos la hubiéramos perdido a causa de mi terquedad). Nos hubiéramos perdido ver como es Dios de confiable si no hubiera hecho lo que Él me dijo. Es una lección que nunca olvidaré.

Let Your Pain Draw You Closer to Others

“Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.”

Galatians 6:2 (NLT)

Suffering changes you. It can turn you away from self-centeredness and toward caring more about other people in pain.

One important way you can use your pain for good is to draw closer to others. If you’re honest about the things that are causing you pain, then it will deepen your love and mature your relationships and sense of community. If you allow yourself to be vulnerable, then it will help you build authentic relationships.

There’s a sad statistic that about a third of marriages end up in divorce after the loss of a child. People all grieve differently, and it can drive a couple apart.

When our son died, my wife Kay and I decided we were going to use our pain to grow closer together rather than let it drive us apart. We didn’t try to talk each other out of our pain. When Kay was going through a wave of grief, I would simply walk over and put my arm around her or just stand by her and be quiet. There were no words to say.

The deeper the pain, the fewer words you use.

Our small group came over after Matthew died. They said, “We’re spending the night at your house. We’re not going to leave you here alone. We’re going to be with you.” They didn’t try to give us any words of wisdom. They just gave us the ministry of presence. They slept on our couches and on the floor. I’ll never forget how it held us up.

The Bible says, “Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2 NLT).

You don’t have to try to cheer people up when they’re grieving. Instead, try to enter into their grief and feel it with them. Sharing in someone’s pain leads to building fellowship, becoming closer to other people, and strengthening relationships.

Dilo como Podría Ser

“ [Dios] que llama las cosas que no son como si ya existieran”.   Romanos 4:17 (NVI)

Hay un enorme poder en tus palabras. Para convertirte en una persona de fe, debes cambiar tu forma de hablar. Tienes que anunciarlo para experimentarlo.

Algunas veces hablar en fe parece totalmente ingenuo, totalmente arrogante y totalmente fuera de foco para las personas que no comprenden la fe.

Abraham sabía esto. Dios vino a Abraham un día y le dijo, “Abram, te cambiaré el nombre de Abram a Abraham”. Abraham significa “el padre de una gran nación”.

Solo había un problema, que Abraham tenía 99 años de edad y su esposa ya no tenía edad para procrear hijos. Probablemente fue ridiculizado por su nombre. Pero Dios dice que no vivimos en un mundo de realidad humana sino que vivimos en un mundo de realidad espiritual, y lo vemos no como es, sino como podría ser, como debería ser, como Dios quiere que sea.

Romanos 4:17 dice “[Dios] que llama las cosas que no son como si ya existieran” (NVI). A eso se le llama hablar en fe —lo declaras para vivirlo.

Mi primer don espiritual es la fe; no lo digo como es, lo digo como podría ser, como debería ser, como Dios quiere que sea.

Hay personas que dicen las cosas exactamente como están en el mundo. Y hay muchas cosas en el mundo que están bastante mal. Así que critican esto y desprecian aquello, y tienden a ser negativos con justa razón, porque hay muchas razones para ser negativos. Ellos dicen, “yo simplemente lo digo tal como es”.

Esa es una forma de hacerlo, pero hay otra forma mucho mejor; no decirlo como es; ¡dilo como podría ser! Decirlo como es, nunca ha cambiado a nadie, solamente pone a las personas a la defensiva.

Por ejemplo, podrías decirle a un hombre, “eres un pésimo padre, no pasas tiempo con tus hijos porque tu carrera es más importante”. Cuando etiquetas a alguien, se lo refuerzas. En vez de eso, podrías decir, “veo en ti un hombre con un potencial para grandes cosas, si tan sólo permitieras a Jesucristo tomar el control de tu vida, no serías perfecto, pero podrías convertirte en un hombre de Dios con un carácter que tus hijos admirarían”. Ese es el tipo de conversación ¡que motiva al cambio!

No tienes que decirlo como es. Dilo como podría ser, como debería ser, como Dios quiere que sea. Dilo por adelantado y en fe.

Let Your Pain Draw You Nearer to God

“We were really crushed and overwhelmed . . . and saw how powerless we were to help ourselves; but that was good, for then we put everything into the hands of God, who alone could save us, for he can even raise the dead. And he did help us.”

2 Corinthians 1:8-10 (TLB)

When anything painful happens to you, you’ve got a choice: You can run to God, or you can run from God.

If you’re running away from God, what are you running to? Who could help you more in your pain than God?

In the years since my son Matthew died, I have had to choose over and over again to run to God. In fact, in those years I’ve spent more time alone with God than in all of the previous years of my life combined. Why? Pain has a way of drawing you close to God.

How do you draw closer to God when you’re in pain? The first thing you do is tell him exactly how you feel. It’s what you naturally do when you see a disaster like a hurricane or an earthquake and cry out, “Oh my God!”

Even if you cry out, “God, I don’t like this. I’m mad. I’m upset,” that’s still drawing close to God in prayer. It’s called the prayer of lament.

You need to learn how to worship God in all the phases of grief. In other words, you use prayer to express shock, to unload your sorrow, and to struggle with your emotions. You surrender your life to God when you don’t know which way to turn. You ask God to use pain for good in your life. You don’t suppress any emotion. You tell God exactly what you’re feeling and draw near to him.

You do what Paul did in 2 Corinthians 1:8-10: “We were really crushed and overwhelmed . . . and saw how powerless we were to help ourselves; but that was good, for then we put everything into the hands of God, who alone could save us, for he can even raise the dead. And he did help us” (TLB).

I have seen so many people transformed by the process of learning to worship, trust, and draw close to God when they’re in pain. They have learned that God is never closer to you than when you are brokenhearted.

Don’t waste your pain. Let it cause you to turn to God, spend more time with him and his Word, and be reminded of his promises to you.

Fe es dar Gracias a Dios por Adelantado

“Por eso les digo: Crean que ya han recibido todo lo que estén pidiendo en oración, y lo obtendrán”.  Marcos 11:24 (NVI)

Fe no es creer que Dios puede hacer algo. Fe no es esperar que Él lo va a hacer. Fe es agradecerle a Dios por adelantado.

Jesús dijo, “Por eso les digo: Crean que ya han recibido todo lo que estén pidiendo en oración, y lo obtendrán”  Marcos 11:24 (NVI).

Tú dices “¡Espera un minuto! ¿Debo agradecerle a Dios por adelantado antes de recibir algo para poder obtenerlo?” ¡Sí! Agradecer a Dios después de haber recibido algo, es gratitud. Cuando le agradeces por adelantado, a eso se le llama fe.

Usé esta ilustración hace algunas semanas, pero la vuelvo a mencionar porque verdaderamente ayuda a explicar la idea de agradecer a Dios por adelantado: si alguien te diera en este momento, un cheque por mil dólares, ¿esperarías a cobrarlo para entonces agradecerle a la persona? ¡No! Le darías las gracias inmediatamente. Aunque los mil dólares no serán realmente tuyos hasta que cobres el cheque, ya que ese cheque es simplemente una promesa. En el momento que recibes el cheque puedes genuinamente dar las gracias creyendo que la promesa es sólida y que la persona tiene suficiente dinero en el banco para cubrir esa cantidad.

Así es la fe. Es agradecerle a Dios por anticipado.

Jesús dijo, “Que se haga con ustedes conforme a su fe” Mateo 9:29 (NVI).
