How to Spot Your Blind Spots

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?”

Matthew 7:3 (NIV)

Before you judge someone else, remember that you have blind spots in your own life. Blind spots are attitudes or weaknesses in your life that you cannot see or refuse to see, even though they cause conflict with others.

For instance, you may be constantly argumentative and not realize you keep turning simple conversations into debates. Jesus says that when you feel the urge to judge someone because of their blind spots, think of it as an opportunity to uncover your own and to address them.

He talked about this in the Sermon on the Mount: “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye” (Matthew 7:3-5 NIV).

He’s saying, “How dare you? Why are you so concerned about the sin in someone’s else’s life when you haven’t dealt with the even greater sin in your own life? Take care of your blind spots so that you will be able to see clearly to help others.”

Have you noticed that you tend to judge in others what you dislike in yourself? If you’re lazy and you know it—and you don’t like that about yourself—then you tend to see it more in others and judge them. If you’re prideful or greedy, you tend to spot that quickly in other people. Whatever you tend to struggle with, you’ll notice in others more easily.

The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 11:31, “If we judged ourselves in the right way, God would not judge us” (NCV).

Think about what that verse is saying: If we would seriously examine our lives and self-evaluate our own weaknesses, faults, and failures, then God wouldn’t have to judge us.

God is for you, not against you. He already knows your blind spots, and he wants to help you address them so that you can mature in your faith.

Necesitas la Presencia de Dios, no su Explicación

“Sé paciente y espera las obras del SEÑOR”. Salmos 37:7a (PDT)

Una de las razones por las que las personas luchamos con el contentamiento, es porque siempre estamos buscando explicaciones del por qué suceden las cosas en nuestras vidas. Nos asusta que Dios no nos ofrezca explicaciones. ¿Por qué no lo hace?

Porque te está probando. Él te está poniendo a prueba para ver si dejas ir el control y aprenderás a estar satisfecho, ya sea que lo explique o no.

Dios no te debe explicación de nada, y no lo entenderías, aunque te la diera.

Pero incluso si consiguieras una explicación, todavía no quitaría el dolor. No vas a saber por qué la mayoría de las cosas suceden hasta llegar al otro lado de la muerte.

Dios no va a darte una explicación, pero te pondrá a prueba.

Recuerdo cuando era un niño, que la única vez que nuestra aula en la escuela estaba en silencio era durante una prueba. El maestro decía: “¡No deben hablar! Tomen sus lápices y contesten la prueba. “Incluso el maestro se quedaría en silencio.

Cuando Dios está en silencio en tu vida, estás pasando por una prueba. Cuando no escuchas a Dios y lo sientes como a un millón de kilómetros de distancia, ¡eso es una prueba! El maestro siempre está en silencio cuando los estudiantes hacen una prueba. Cuando Dios está en silencio en tu vida, tu fe está siendo probada. ¿Dejarás ir el control, o te aferrarás más fuertemente? ¿Aprenderás a estar satisfecho?

Cuando estés pasando por un dolor esta semana o el próximo mes o este año, realmente no necesitas la explicación de Dios. Necesitas la presencia de Dios.

What Makes You Vulnerable to Temptation?

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)

If you want to be able to fight the persistent temptations in your life, you need to know what makes you vulnerable to Satan’s efforts.

Ephesians 4:27 says, “Do not give the devil a foothold” (NIV). Don’t give Satan a place in your life to start leveraging your weaknesses and get you messed up.

What’s the most common foothold you can give Satan that allows him to push all these temptations? It’s any negative emotion. Anytime you have a negative emotion, you’ve just given Satan a foothold in your life, and you’re going to be more vulnerable than at any other time to temptation. That’s why the Bible says in Proverbs 4:23, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (NIV).

Your heart sits at the center of your emotions. But to defeat temptation, don’t focus on your behavior and what you’re about to do. Instead, identify the thoughts you’re having and the feelings that come out of those thoughts.

That’s how Satan hooks you—not with your behavior but with your thoughts. He plays with your emotions every day of your life. He hooks your feelings. He is a master manipulator of your moods. Satan gets certain emotions stirring by influencing your thoughts and causing you to doubt God’s Word.

Once he’s got you emotionally involved, you’re cooked. When your emotions have kicked in, the behavior is going to happen. Satan knows your negative emotions will lead you to sin.

You are far more vulnerable to temptation when you’re experiencing negative emotions. Satan knows what they are and will work them for your destruction. Shouldn’t you know what they are, too?

The only way you’ll be able to fight any persistent temptation in your life is to identify the emotions that make you vulnerable. Then, refocus your mind on God’s Word so that you can replace those negative emotions with God’s love.

Ríndete y Reconoce que Dios está en Control

“¡Ríndanse! ¡Reconozcan que yo soy Dios! ¡Yo estoy por encima de las naciones! ¡Yo estoy por encima de toda la tierra!”. Salmos 46:10 (DHH)

Cada día, tienes que decidir quién va a estar en control de tu vida, tú o Dios.

Esa decisión es una batalla. Hay cosas en tu vida que deseas controlar. Quieres hacer tus propias reglas. Pero siempre el alivio del estrés comienza con dejar a Dios ser Dios. Siempre empieza diciendo, “Dios, estoy renunciando al control, porque tú puedes controlar las cosas que están fuera de control en mi vida”.

Salmos 46:10 dice, “¡Ríndanse! ¡Reconozcan que yo soy Dios! ¡Yo estoy por encima de las naciones! ¡Yo estoy por encima de toda la tierra!” Salmos 46:10 (DHH).

No sé lo que vas a enfrentar esta semana. Tú tampoco lo sabes. Pero te puedo decir lo que Dios quiere que hagas: ríndete y sabrás. Rinde el control y sabrás que Dios está en control. ¡Ríndete y sabrás! Este es el primer paso para la serenidad en tu vida.

Cuando nos enfrentamos a situaciones fuera de control, tendemos a ir hacia uno de los dos extremos. Para algunos de ustedes, entre más fuera de control está tu vida, más tratas de controlar. Algunos de ustedes hacen exactamente lo contrario: ¡sólo te rindes! Haces una fiesta de compasión y te invitas a ti mismo.

Estas dos reacciones al estrés son tontas. No funcionan.  En lugar de ser víctima o ser hiperactivo que controla, debes hacer la oración de rendición.

La razón número uno por la que estás bajo estrés, es porque estás en conflicto con Dios. Estás tratando de controlar cosas que solo Dios puede controlar. Tú no puedes controlar a tu esposo o a tus hijos o a tu esposa o tu trabajo, tu futuro, tu pasado o cualquiera de esas cosas. Cuanto más lo hagas, más estás tratando de jugar a ser Dios, y te pones en oposición a Dios. No sólo vas a perder ese conflicto, sino que también vas a cansarte.

Millones de personas hacen la oración de la serenidad, que se basa en la oración del Señor, pero la mayoría no ha leído nunca las últimas líneas de la oración: “Viviendo un día a la vez; disfrutando un momento a la vez; aceptando la dificultad como el camino hacia la paz; tomando, como Jesús lo hizo, este mundo pecador tal cual es, no como seria; confiando que Tú harás que todo salga bien. Si me entrego a Tu voluntad; Para que sea razonablemente feliz en esta vida. Y sumamente feliz contigo por siempre en la eternidad. AMEN”.

¡Ahí es donde está el poder! Hay poder cuando le rindes a Dios las cosas que has intentado quitarle el control.

Learn to Relax in Your Limitations

“We have this treasure from God, but we are like clay jars that hold the treasure. This shows that the great power is from God, not from us.”

2 Corinthians 4:7 (NCV)

You’re always going to get discouraged when you try to be a superhero and do more than is humanly possible. You need a more realistic view of yourself: You can’t fix everybody’s problems. You can’t be in more than one place at one time. You can’t do everything you want to do. You can’t spend money you don’t have.

You need to learn to relax in your limitations. Anytime you live outside of the limitations of your life, you’re going to get discouraged. It’s easier to fill your schedule than it is to fulfill your schedule. It’s always easier to get in than it is to get out. It’s easier to make a promise than to keep a promise. It’s always easier to get into debt than it is to get out of debt.

Often the first signs of overextending show up in your body. The apostle Paul says in 2 Corinthians 4:7, “We have this treasure from God, but we are like clay jars that hold the treasure. This shows that the great power is from God, not from us” (NCV). In other words, you need to know your limits. You need to recognize your warning signs when you’re overextended and realize you’re just the vessel and God is the power.

Our bodies are like clay jars—we’re all a little cracked because we’ve all been dropped here and there. But God often puts his greatest gifts in the weakest people, and that gives us the opportunity to point back to him and say, “That’s got to be God. That could have only happened through God’s power.”

Throughout history, God has used flawed instruments to put his glory on display. Nothing would get done if God only used perfect people, because there aren’t any!

You may think it’s best to hide your weaknesses, but God wants to use them in your life. But first, you’ve got to recognize and respect your limitations. Then, you trust in God’s power and not your own to accomplish his purpose for you.

Dios está Cerca

“El Señor está cerca de quienes lo invocan”. Salmos 145:18a (NVI)

Dios no está tan lejos como la estrella más lejana. Él está tan cerca como tu siguiente latido. Él está justo ahí contigo a cada momento. La Biblia dice en Hechos 17:27 que, “Dios quería que la humanidad lo buscara y, aunque fuera a tientas, lo encontrara. Pero en realidad, Dios no está lejos de ninguno de nosotros” (PDT).

Podrás sentirte como si Dios estuviera a un millón de kilómetros de distancia. Pero tus sentimientos no siempre están en lo correcto —todos sabemos eso. La verdad es, que Dios está contigo justo ahora.

Porque Él es un Padre cercano:

Dios nunca está demasiado ocupado para ti. Así de cerca está. Ese es el tipo de amor que Él tiene. Salmos 145:18 dice. “El Señor está cerca de quienes lo invocan”. Cada vez que le llamas, Dios está cerca. Él piensa mucho en ti, más de lo que tú piensas en Él. Dios pensó en ti antes de que nacieras. Él piensa en ti, cada momento del día. La verdad es que muchas veces estamos demasiado ocupados para Dios. Pero Él nunca está ocupado para nosotros.

Dios ama satisfacer tus necesidades. Él nunca lo hace con desagrado. ¡Él te ama! Mateo 7:11 dice, “Pues si ustedes… saben dar cosas buenas a sus hijos, ¡cuánto más su Padre que está en el cielo dará cosas buenas a los que le pidan!”. Puedes alegrarte del hecho de que Dios disfruta darte cosas buenas.

Dios comprende tus heridas. Algunos de ustedes están atravesando por algo difícil esta semana, y necesitan este versículo: “El Señor está cerca de los quebrantados de corazón, y salva a los de espíritu abatido” Salmos 34:18 (NVI).

Dios está cerca de ti, y Él te entiende. Vuelve a Él.

It’s Not About You

“Our message is not about ourselves. It is about Jesus Christ as the Lord. We are your servants for his sake.”

2 Corinthians 4:5 (GW)

The more you lead a self-focused life, the more you’re prone to discouragement. Every time you forget that it’s not about you, you’re going to get prideful or fearful or bitter. Those feelings will always lead to discouragement because they keep you focused on yourself.

The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 4:5, “Our message is not about ourselves. It is about Jesus Christ as the Lord. We are your servants for his sake” (GW).

It’s not about you! God put you on this earth, and he has a message he wants to declare to the world through you. But your life message is not about you. It’s about Jesus Christ.

I chose those four words—“It’s not about you”—to start The Purpose Driven Life because that’s the most countercultural message you could give in today’s world. Nearly everything in society—songs, video games, TV shows, news stories, and advertisements—says you’ve got to think about yourself first.

Sometimes I wish I hadn’t put that sentence in the book, because I had no idea that for the rest of my life I was going to be constantly tested on that phrase. I have to repeat it to myself 20 times a day! When someone praises me, criticizes me, misjudges me, or disagrees with me, I have to remind myself, “It’s not about me.” Why? Because when I focus on me, I’m going to get discouraged.

Instead, as Paul says in today’s verse, we are servants for Jesus’ sake. That means we are motivated to serve others because of what Jesus has done for us.

God is always more interested in why you’re doing what you’re doing than he is in what you’re actually doing. He cares about the motivations of your heart. Why you’re doing something always determines how long you’re going to do it. If you’re motivated by selfish ambition, that will never be good enough. You’ll eventually get discouraged and quit.

But when you’re motivated to do something because of how it advances the Gospel and glorifies Jesus, you will have the encouragement you need to see it through.

Puedes Contar con Dios

“Toda buena dádiva y todo don perfecto descienden de lo alto, donde está el Padre que creó las lumbreras celestes, y que no cambia como los astros ni se mueve como las sombras”. Santiago 1:17 (NVI)

Cuando todo está cambiando a tu alrededor, es importante recordar que Dios es un Padre consistente. Él nunca te abandonará. Puedes contar con Él. Dios es confiable, Él es digno de confianza.

Santiago 1:17 dice, “Toda buena dádiva y todo don perfecto descienden de lo alto, donde está el Padre que creó las lumbreras celestes, y que no cambia como los astros ni se mueve como las sombras” (NVI).

Los padres humanos a menudo son impredecibles. He hablado con personas que han dicho, “Mientras crecía, nunca supe cómo me iba a tratar mi padre. Nunca sabía si iba a estar callado o violento. Nunca supe si me iba a abrazar o a golpear. Nunca supe si me aceptaría o rechazaría”. Los padres inconsistentes producen hijos inseguros.

Pero Dios no es temperamental. Tu Padre celestial es consistente. Una de las cosas con las que puedes contar es que Dios siempre será el mismo contigo.

La Biblia dice en 2 Timoteo 2:13 “Si somos infieles, él permanece fiel, pues él no puede negar quién es” (NTV).

Sabemos que el mundo está cambiando más rápidamente ahora. Alvin Toffler escribió un libro llamado “El choque futuro”, en el cuál él dijo que, en tiempos de cambios rápidos, las personas necesitan lo que él llama “islas de estabilidad”. Cuando todo está en el aire, necesitas algo en tu vida que nunca cambie como una ancla para tu alma. Necesitas una isla de estabilidad para manejar el estrés.

Sólo hay un problema: En este planeta, nada dura para siempre. Hay sólo una cosa en la que puedes contar y que nunca cambia: el amor cuidadoso y consistente de tu Padre Celestial.

“En su amor inagotable, mi Dios estará a mi lado” Salmos 59:10ª (NTV).

Puedes contar con ello.

Be Who God Created You to Be

“We don’t try to trick anyone or distort the word of God.”

2 Corinthians 4:2 (NLT)

Nothing is more discouraging than trying to be something you’re not.

If you maintain a façade because you’re afraid other people might find out who you are or God might not love you, then you’re going to miss out on God’s best for your life.

God does not bless fakes or phonies. If you want God’s blessing on your life, stop living for the approval of other people and start being who God made you to be. God didn’t create you to be somebody else. When you get to heaven, he isn’t going to ask, “Why weren’t you more like your sister or the popular kid or your successful friend?” He’s going to hold you accountable for how you fulfilled his purposes for your life.

The world doesn’t need two of you or anybody else. But the world does need you to do the work God has for you on earth. He shaped you and gifted you in a unique way, and we’re all missing out if you’re determined to be anyone but yourself.

Paul says in 2 Corinthians 4:2, “We don’t try to trick anyone or distort the word of God” (NLT). In other words, we’re not putting on a disguise or a phony mask. We’re not pretending we’re something we’re not. And we don’t twist the Word of God. Instead, we teach the truth plainly, showing everyone who we really are.

Nothing is more discouraging than trying to please everybody. I’ve been on the cover of Newsweek magazine twice, once as the hero and once as a zero. That’s just life! Even God can’t please everyone. When somebody’s praying for a snow day, someone else is praying for blue skies.

If you’re always trying to be something you’re not, you’re always going to be under stress and fear being exposed, and you’re going to be prone to discouragement.

To defeat discouragement, just be who God made you to be. You don’t have to be perfect for God to bless you—just be authentic.

Dios es Consciente y se Preocupa

“Tan compasivo es el Señor con los que le temen como lo es un padre con sus hijos”.  Salmos 103:13 (NVI)

Dios es cuidadoso, amoroso, padre compasivo. Él te ama más de lo que jamás llegarás a comprender. Dios te ama más de lo que puedas entender. Dios es amor, y Él te hizo para amarte. Él demuestra Su amor por ti en cada cosa que hace, y Su compasión es su cualidad más sobresaliente. Dios es un Padre que se preocupa.

La Biblia dice en Salmos 103:13 “Tan compasivo es el Señor con los que le temen como lo es un padre con sus hijos” (NVI). Él se preocupa compasivamente por todo en tu vida.

La mayoría de los discípulos eran pescadores profesionales. Un día cuando ellos estaban pescando, Jesús, que estaba cansado se recostó en uno de los bordes del bote y se durmió. Cuando la tormenta llegó, esto no debió haber molestado a los discípulos. Como pescadores, ellos estaban acostumbrados a las tormentas. Pero esta debió haber sido una muy grande, porque realmente se asustaron. El bote se balanceaba y se agitaba, y el agua se estaba entrando. Ellos estaban nerviosos y despertaron a Jesús, para hacerle una de las preguntas más importantes de la vida “Señor, ¿no te importa?”.

Tú y yo le hemos hecho esta pregunta a Dios todo el tiempo y de muchas formas: Dios, ves el reporte del médico, ¿no te importa? Ves el desastre en el que está mi matrimonio, ¿no te importa? Ves el poco dinero que tenemos en nuestra cuenta bancaria y todas las facturas por pagar que tenemos, ¿no te importa? Ves como mis hijos están teniendo dificultades en el colegio, ¿no te importa? Tú conoces este miedo que se aferra a mi mente y del cual no puedo deshacerme, ¿no te importa?

La respuesta es sí, a Dios le importa. De hecho, a Él le importa más que a ti. Él quiere ayudarte más de lo que tú quieres Su ayuda. Él sabe que es lo que más te ayudará, mucho mejor que tú. Él está consciente y le importa.

“Pongan todas sus preocupaciones y ansiedades en las manos de Dios, porque él cuida de ustedes” 1 Pedro 5:7 (NTV).

Si tú supieras y pudieras sentir cuanto tu Padre Celestial se preocupa compasivamente y constantemente por ti, lo amarías mucho más. Si sientes que Dios está a miles de kilómetros de distancia, es porque no entiendes la clase de Padre amoroso que tienes. Ese entendimiento es el primer paso para tu paz interior.
