Sin Grows from the Seeds of Selfishness

“There will be more and more evil in the world, so most people will stop showing their love for each other.”

Matthew 24:12 (NCV)

Someone once asked Jesus, “What’s the most important command in Scripture?” He replied, “There are two of them: Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself.”

If those are God’s two most important commands, then their opposite—not loving God and not loving your neighbor—is sin. Sin is always unloving.

Matthew 24:12 says, “There will be more and more evil in the world, so most people will stop showing their love for each other” (NCV). Have you noticed that today? People in general have become more critical, less civil, and ruder than ever. Why? Because as sin increases, love decreases.

Sin is unhelpful, unhealthy, unfair, unwise, untruthful—and it is always selfish.

We often tell ourselves we’re doing something for the benefit of others when we’re really doing it for our own benefit. The Bible says, “Wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind” (James 3:16 NLT). At the root of every sin is self-centeredness.

Why are you here on earth? God did not make you to live for yourself. You were made for something far bigger than that.

You were made by God and for God, and until you understand and believe that, life’s never going to make sense. God didn’t create you so you could center your life on yourself and push other people to the side. You were made to know God, enjoy him, have a friendship with him, serve him, and center your life on him.

Whatever you build your life around is your god, whether it’s your boat or your business or a sport or another person.

God wants you to center your life on him, but sin will always put the focus back on you. Choose love. Where love is abundant, selfishness will not grow.

Servimos porque Somos Salvos

“Dios nos salvó y nos ha llamado a formar un pueblo santo, no por lo que nosotros hayamos hecho, sino porque ése fue su propósito”. 2 Timoteo 1:9a (DHH)

Tú fuiste salvo para servir a Dios. La Biblia dice: “Dios nos salvó y nos ha llamado a formar un pueblo santo, no por lo que nosotros hayamos hecho, sino porque ése fue su propósito” 2 Timoteo 1:9a (DHH).

Dios te redimió para que pudieras hacer su “obra santa”. No eres salvo por el servicio, sino que eres salvo para el servicio. En el Reino de Dios, tienes un lugar, un propósito, un rol y una función que cumplir. Esto le da a tu vida un gran significado y valor.

Jesús pagó con su propia vida para comprar tu salvación. La Biblia nos recuerda: “Porque Dios los compró a un alto precio. Por lo tanto, honren a Dios con su cuerpo” 1 Corintios 6:20 (NTV).

No servimos a Dios por sentimientos de culpa o miedo o incluso por deber, sino por el gozo y la profunda gratitud que sentimos por lo que Él ha hecho por nosotros. Le debemos nuestras vidas. A través de la salvación nuestro pasado ha sido perdonado, nuestro presente tiene significado y nuestro futuro está asegurado. A la luz de estos increíbles beneficios Pablo concluye: “Por eso hermanos, puesto que Dios nos ha mostrado tanta misericordia, les ruego que entreguen todo su ser como sacrificio vivo a Dios” Romanos 12:1a (PTD).

El apóstol Juan nos enseñó que nuestro servicio de amor a los demás, demuestra que somos verdaderamente salvos. Él dijo: “Si amamos a nuestros hermanos creyentes, eso demuestra que hemos pasado de muerte a vida” 1 Juan 3:14 (NTV).

Si no tienes amor por los demás, ningún deseo de servir a los demás y sólo te preocupas por tus necesidades, debes preguntarte si Cristo está realmente en tu vida. Un corazón salvo es uno que quiere servir.

Reflexiona sobre esto:

¿Por qué servir a los demás es tan significativo en nuestro caminar con Jesús?
¿De qué maneras estás usando tu cuerpo para honrar a Dios (1 Corintios 6:20)?
Muchas personas piensan que están demasiado ocupadas o tienen demasiadas responsabilidades para ocuparse en servir a los demás. Si eso es lo que sientes, toma algún tiempo para orar y pedirle a Dios que te muestre lo que tienes que cambiar en tu vida para que puedas ser obediente a Él.

Sin Is the Opposite of God

“Everything he does is good.”

Psalm 111:7 (NCV)

When you ask people what sin is, you’ll get a wide range of answers, from murder to forgetting to call your mom on Mother’s Day.

Most of the time, people think of sin as bad behavior. And your bad behaviors often do reveal sin. But the Bible tells us that God pays more attention to our thoughts than our behaviors. Because it’s sinful thinking that leads to sinful behavior.

So what is sin? Sin is the opposite of God. The Bible says, “Everything he does is good,” “he is good to everyone and has compassion on all he made,” and “everything that God has created is good” (Psalm 111:7 NCV; Psalm 145:9 GNT; 1 Timothy 4:4 GNT).

For example, when you use prescription drugs the right way, they can bring helpful relief. But when you misuse and abuse drugs, something good becomes something harmful. Money is neither good nor bad. It can be used for great good, but it also can be used for incredibly bad things.

God expects you to turn from your sins and start walking faithfully toward him. Part of faith is trusting that God has your best interests in mind. You don’t have to wonder what God is like. The Bible says clearly that he is perfect and does not sin.

While you will never be perfect on earth, you can become more like Jesus. This starts by turning away from sin and making choices every day to pursue what is good and godly.

Dios Toma tu Problema y lo Hace Suyo

“Dios los salvó por su gracia cuando creyeron. Ustedes no tienen ningún mérito en eso; es un regalo de Dios. La salvación no es un premio por las cosas buenas que hayamos hecho, así que ninguno de nosotros puede jactarse de ser salvo”. Efesios 2:8-9 (NTV)

¿Qué es la gracia? Es cuando Dios te da lo que necesitas, no lo que te mereces. La gracia es cuando Dios dice, “Voy a tomar tu problema y voy a hacer que sea mi problema”. La gracia es; la riqueza que Dios te ha dado por medio de Cristo.

La Biblia dice, “Dios los salvó por su gracia cuando creyeron. Ustedes no tienen ningún mérito en eso; es un regalo de Dios. La salvación no es un premio por las cosas buenas que hayamos hecho, así que ninguno de nosotros puede jactarse de ser salvo” Efesios 2:8-9 (NTV). En otras palabras, no te puedes ganar el camino al cielo. No puedes pagar tu entrada al cielo. Es sólo un regalo.

Sé que no lo parezco ahora, pero durante tres años yo fui un salvavidas. Y cada socorrista sabe que no puede salvar a la gente mientras estén tratando de salvarse a sí mismos. Si alguien se está ahogando y agitándose en pánico, un salvavidas sabe que debe permanecer separado de él por unos segundos y esperar a que esa persona se rinda. Porque si tratas de salvar a otros mientras están tratando de salvarse a sí mismos, te van a hundir también.

Cuando finalmente desisten, ellos se relajan; colocas tu brazo alrededor de ellos y simplemente nadas hacia la orilla. Es realmente muy fácil.

Dios quiere salvarte. Jesucristo quiere salvarte de tus heridas, tus hábitos y tus complejos. Quiere salvarte para Su propósito y por Su gracia. Pero tienes que dejar de intentarlo por ti mismo. Tienes que relajarte. Necesitas soltarte y dejar a Dios ser Dios.

Three Things to Focus on Instead of Yourself

“Let heaven fill your thoughts; don’t spend your time worrying about things down here.”

Colossians 3:2 (TLB)

True freedom comes when you focus your mind on God’s truth. But how do you focus your mind on the right things so you can experience freedom? Here are three things you can do that will make the biggest difference in managing your mind.

First, think about Jesus. Hebrews 12:3 says, “Think about Jesus’ example. He held on while wicked people were doing evil things to him. So do not get tired and stop trying” (NCV). What gives you the power to keep on going? You think about Jesus. Keep your mind on who the Bible says he is and the example he’s given you for how to live a life that pleases God.

Second, think about others. “Let us think about each other and help each other to show love and do good deeds” (Hebrews 10:24 NCV). Most of the people around the world think about themselves first. So anybody who thinks more about others than they do about themselves is going to shine. When you choose to think about what others may need and how you can help, you’ll find it’s hard to let your problems get you down.

Third, think about eternity. The Bible says in Colossians 3:2, “Let heaven fill your thoughts; don’t spend your time worrying about things down here” (TLB). Whatever you’re worried about today is probably not going to matter in five years, much less in eternity. Everything is put into perspective when you think about your life in light of eternity.

Whatever situation you’re facing today, stop and think about what you’re thinking about. Then choose to focus on Jesus, other people, and your home in eternity. It will take the focus off of yourself, which is how God intended for you to live. And it will transform your life!

Estás Llamado a Servir a los Demás, No a Ti Mismo

“Cada uno de nosotros dará a Dios cuenta de sí mismo”. Romanos 14:12 (NTV)

Al final de tu vida aquí en la tierra, te presentarás ante Dios y Él va a evaluar lo bien que serviste a otros con tu vida. La Biblia dice: “Cada uno de nosotros dará a Dios cuenta de sí mismo” Romanos 14:12 (NTV).

Piensa en las consecuencias de eso. Un día Dios comparará la cantidad de tiempo y energía que gastamos en nosotros mismos en comparación con lo que hemos invertido en el servicio a los demás.

En ese momento, todas nuestras excusas por egocentrismo sonarán huecas: “yo estaba demasiado ocupado” o “yo tenía mis propias metas” o “estaba preocupado con el trabajo, divertirme, o prepararme para la jubilación”. Para todas las excusas Dios responderá: “Lo siento, respuesta incorrecta. Te he creado, salvado, y te llamé y te mandé a vivir una vida de servicio. ¿Qué parte de esto tú no entiendes?”.

La Biblia advierte a los incrédulos, “Pero los que por egoísmo rechazan la verdad para aferrarse a la maldad recibirán el gran castigo de Dios“ Romanos 2:8 (NVI), pero para los cristianos significará una pérdida de recompensas eternas.

Nosotros sólo estamos plenamente vivos cuando estamos ayudando a los demás. Jesús dijo: “Porque el que quiera salvar su vida la perderá; pero el que pierda su vida por mi causa y por el evangelio la salvará“ Marcos 8:35 (NVI); véase también Mateo 10:39, 16:25; Lucas 9:24, 17:33.

Esta verdad es tan importante que se repite cinco veces en los Evangelios. Si tú no estás sirviendo, tú apenas estás existiendo, porque la vida es para el ministerio. Dios quiere que aprendas a amar y servir a otros desinteresadamente.

¿Cuál ha sido el efecto sobre ti mismo cuando sirves a los demás?
¿Por qué quiere Dios que aprendamos a amar y servir a los demás? ¿Qué dice eso acerca de Él?

The Only Truth That Sets You Free

“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8:32 (NLT)

A lot of things that are true won’t set you free. You can learn how to program a computer, but that won’t set you free. You could read all the latest self-help books, but that won’t set you free either.

The only truth that sets you free is the truth of God’s Word: “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32 NLT). A lot of people can quote this verse, but not everyone acknowledges that it’s talking about the Bible or is even from the Bible.

If knowing God’s Word is the only way to be free, then you’ve got to make reading and studying the Bible a priority in your life. You’ve got to feed your mind on the truth of God’s Word.

The ancient Israelite King David understood how important God’s Word is. There was a time when he had so many enemies that he was actually a fugitive. He was running for his life and hiding in caves. But no matter what happened, he fed himself with God’s truth.

Psalm 119:95 is one of the psalms he wrote during this time, and it says, “Though the wicked hide along the way to kill me, I will quietly keep my mind on your laws” (NLT). 

When you look around at things in the world, it’s easy to get discouraged. If you scroll through your news feed, listen to talk radio, or watch the news, you’re going to get down. You’re going to feel hopeless. But when you fill your mind with the truth of God’s Word, then you will have more hope and a better perspective on your life—even when you’re in a crisis and running from your enemies. 

“How I love your law! I think about it all day long” (Psalm 119:97 GNT). It might be intimidating to try to think about God’s Word all day long. That’s because it doesn’t come naturally to anyone! You might struggle to think about God’s Word even one time in your day, but you can start somewhere.

Try starting your day with the Word of God. Spend 10 minutes reading the Bible in the morning, and then you can think about what you read throughout your day. And the Holy Spirit will help you recall what you’ve read when you when you need it in difficult times.

Estudio Bíblico: Mantenlo Simple

“Examíname, oh Dios, y sondea mi corazón; ponme a prueba y sondea mis pensamientos. Fíjate si voy por mal camino, y guíame por el camino eterno”. Salmos 139:23-24 (NVI)

Una vez que te has convencido de que un tiempo diario a solas con Dios, es necesario para tu crecimiento espiritual, ¿qué debes hacer para lograr tenerlo? Puede que estés motivado, pero no sabes cómo hacerlo una realidad.

Alguien ha dicho: “Si le apuntas a nada, le atinarás siempre”. Para tener un tiempo devocional significativo, necesitas un plan o algún tipo de bosquejo general a seguir.

La principal regla es esta: mantén tu plan simple.

Primero, asegúrate de tener una Biblia, un cuaderno para anotar lo que el Señor te muestre y para hacer una lista de oración y un himnario en caso de que quieras cantar alabazas.

Luego, sigue estos tres pasos sencillos: relájate, pide y lee.

Espera en Dios (relájate). Quédate quieto por un minuto; no entres apresuradamente en la presencia de Dios, ni comiences a hablar de inmediato. Sigue el consejo de Dios: “Quédense quietos, reconozcan que yo soy Dios” Salmos 46:10a (NVI). Quédate quieto por un momento a fin de tener una actitud reverente.
Ora brevemente (pide). Este no es tu tiempo de oración, sino una breve oración de apertura para pedir a Dios que limpie tu corazón y te guíe en ese tiempo juntos. ¡Debes estar sintonizado con el Autor antes de que puedas comprender su Libro! Dos buenos pasajes para memorizar de la Escritura son Salmos 139:23-24 y Salmos 119:18.
Lee una sección de las Escrituras (lee). Aquí es donde comienza tu conversación con Dios. Él te habla a través de Su Palabra, y tú le hablas en oración. Lee tu Biblia.


Pausadamente. No lo hagas apurado; no trates de completar un pasaje demasiado largo; no corras en la lectura.
Repetidamente. Lee un pasaje una y otra vez, hasta que comiences a comprenderlo en tu mente.
Sin detenerte. No te detengas en medio de una frase para salirte por la tangente y comenzar un estudio doctrinal. Lee esa sección por el puro gozo de hacerlo, y permite que Dios te hable.
En voz alta pero suave. Leer en voz alta aumentará tu concentración. También te ayudará a comprender mejor lo que lees porque lo verás y lo escucharás. Sin embargo, lee con una voz suave para no perturbar a nadie.
Sistemáticamente. No uses el método de “leer donde te caiga el dedo”

—un pasaje aquí, un capítulo allá, lo que te gusta más aquí, una porción interesante allá. Lee la Biblia tal como fue escrita: un libro o carta a la vez, ordenadamente. 

Reflexiona sobre esto:

¿Por qué es importante escribir lo que Dios te dice o te muestra, en tu tiempo a solas con Él?
¿Que necesitas cambiar en tu horario de cada día para tener un tiempo a solas con Dios, dónde puedas cubrir cada uno de esos pasos?
¿Qué otros aspectos de tu tiempo a solas con Dios te ayudarán a permanecer enfocado y tener una experiencia verdaderamente significativa?

Are You Telling Yourself the Truth?

“Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.”

Romans 8:5 (NLT)

Have you ever felt like you are a hostage to your thoughts? Maybe you just can’t get a thought out of your mind. Or you often find yourself doing things you don’t want to do. You knowingly engage in self-defeating behavior. You know something is not good for you, but you do it anyway.

Romans 7:23 says, “I see a different law at work in my body—a law that fights against the law which my mind approves of. It makes me a prisoner to the law of sin which is at work in my body” (GNT).

Because of your sinful nature, you think of yourself and your wants more than what God wants. It’s a battle in your mind, and you’re losing it. Your old nature—who you were before Jesus changed your life—is not your friend. It is the source of all your self-defeating habits that tend to take you down.

Do you want to break those habits and have more control over the way you think?

Then you need to hear and understand this truth: You don’t have to believe everything you think.

Your mind lies to you all the time. Just because you think something is true doesn’t make it true. Just because you feel something is true doesn’t make it true. Your mind and your emotions often lie to you. Part of spiritual growth—becoming more like Jesus—is learning to know the difference between thoughts that are true and those that are not.

One of the most important disciplines you can build in life is to challenge your own thoughts. Say to yourself, “I know what I’m thinking, but is that really true?”

No matter how far you go in your spiritual walk, your old, sinful nature will keep trying to take control of your thoughts. You have to learn to question your thoughts, not just one time but throughout your day and throughout your life!

When you start to think nobody likes you, ask yourself if that’s really true. If you think it’s never going to get better, ask yourself if it’s true. When you think your life is worthless, question what Satan is trying convince you of. Then, remember what you know from God’s Word to be true.

“Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit” (Romans 8:5 NLT).

La Eternidad debe Dar Forma a Tus Metas

“Por eso yo corro cada paso con propósito”. 1 Corintios 9:26a (NTV)

Los propósitos de Dios para tu vida no son sólo para aquí y ahora; son para siempre. Si tú piensas que esta vida es todo lo que existe, entonces establecerás metas, como si esta vida es todo lo que hay.

Por otro lado, si te das cuenta, un día vas a estar delante de Dios —y Él te va a preguntar, “¿Qué hiciste mientras estabas en la tierra? ¿Aprendiste lo que tenías que aprender? ¿Confiaste en mi hijo?”— entonces eso definirá como ves tus metas.

¿Te ayudan tus metas a conocer a Dios, a crecer en Dios, a servir a Dios, a compartir de Dios, a amar a Dios y a hablarles a los demás de Dios?

Lo que te estoy preguntando es, por ejemplo, ¿Cómo oras? Cuando tú oras, ¿Oras para que Dios te ayude con tu propio propósito o en cambio oras para alinearte con el propósito de Dios? Si dices, “Dios, sólo quiero hacer lo que tú me pusiste en la tierra para hacer”, te garantizo, Dios va a bendecir todo lo que toques, porque Él está buscando personas que pueda utilizar para cumplir Sus propósitos.

Las metas de Dios tienen la eternidad en mente. Pablo da un ejemplo de esto cuando dice: “Por eso yo corro cada paso con propósito” 1 Corintios 9:26 a (NTV). ¡Pablo tenía un propósito! Él se negó a distraerse.

La Biblia compara a menudo la vida con una carrera, así que quiero que pienses en esto: En una carrera, la meta final está predeterminada, y avanzas un paso a la vez.

Lo mismo pasa con las metas. Trabajas en ellas un paso a la vez y trabajas con propósito en cada paso.

¿Cuál es tu meta? ¿Cómo esa meta refleja una perspectiva eterna?
¿Te ayudan tus metas a conocer a Dios, a crecer en Dios, a servir a Dios,

a compartir de Dios, a amar a Dios y a hablar a los demás de Dios?
¿Qué paso puedes tomar hoy para acercarte a tu meta?
