What It Really Means to Repent

“So repent [change your inner self—your old way of thinking, regret past sins] and return [to God—seek His purpose for your life], so that your sins may be wiped away [blotted out, completely erased], so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord [restoring you like a cool wind on a hot day].”

Acts 3:19 (AMP)

Somewhere along the way, “repent” became a negative word.

When many people hear that word, they think of a guy holding a sign on the corner telling them to “turn or burn” because the end is near.

But the world’s idea of what it means to repent is totally wrong. “Repent” is actually the most positive, transforming word in the world.

The word “repent” just means you change your mind. It’s not when you stop doing bad things—that’s the result of repentance. It means you used to think one way and now you think another way.

You used to think guilty thoughts, and now you think forgiven thoughts. You used to think damnation and discouragement, and now you think peace. You used to think selfishness, and now you think of others first. You used to think ambitiously, and now you think about how to serve. You think about God as he really is—a kind and loving Father. You think about yourself as God sees you—with value and purpose. You think about what really has meaning in life.

Repentance is when you start rethinking your life in order to match how Jesus thinks. When you repent and turn from darkness to light, it’s not about not getting to do the things you want to do anymore. It’s about doing only the things that matter because your mind is set on what’s most important. It’s the most positive change in the world.

Do you need some refreshment? Do you need to recover from life’s hurts and be revived after loss or failure? Then you only need to repent. When you do, you’ll come into God’s presence and experience real joy and peace.

Why do you think people don’t like the idea of repenting? What do they think it will mean for their lives?
How is being in God’s presence refreshing?
Look at Acts 3:19. Why does repentance involve returning to God?

How to Take Every Thought Captive

“Letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.”

Romans 8:6 (NLT)

Have you noticed your mind doesn’t always do what you tell it to do?

Sometimes your mind has a mind of its own. Sometimes your thoughts go off in directions that you don’t intend. When you need to pray, your thoughts stray. When you want to ponder God’s Word, your thoughts want to wander.

The Bible says, when this happens, you need to take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5). What does that mean? The Greek word used in that verse literally means you take thoughts prisoner. You conquer them. You bring them under control.

That’s only possible when you use the two weapons every believer has available to them: the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.

First, you need to recognize the power of God’s Spirit inside you. Without him, you are defenseless. Romans 8:6 says, “Letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace” (NLT).

You need Jesus in your life because, without the Holy Spirit, your sinful nature controls your mind and will always lead you in the wrong direction. But when the Spirit controls you, you have the power you need to take every thought captive.

Second, you need the Word of God. Jesus says, “If you obey my teaching, you are really my disciples; you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32 GNT).

People like to quote the second part of that passage. In fact, it’s posted on university buildings all over the world. But very few people quote the first part, where it says you have to learn and obey God’s Word. People want the freedom without God’s truth.

In reality, there is no freedom without truth. And there is no truth without God’s Word. God has given you the direction you need for life, and you can trust every word the Bible says. The more you get to know God’s Word and fill your mind with his truth, the easier it will be to direct your thoughts where you want them to go.

When do you most often find yourself having to take a thought captive?
How does it make you feel to know that, if you want God’s power, you have to surrender control to the Holy Spirit?
Why do you think many people want to ignore God’s command to obey his Word? Why do people want freedom without the truth?

Dios quiere Salvarte, no Regañarte

Yo he venido a salvarte”.

Jesús vino a salvarnos, no a asustarnos.

Just a Nibble of Sin Will Get You Hooked

“Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away.”

James 1:14 (NLT)

For my dad, a day without fishing was a wasted day. He would manage, no matter what was going on, to go fishing for at least 30 minutes every day. As I watched my dad catch fish after fish (while I caught nothing), I learned really quickly that no fish bites a bare hook.

You can’t just throw a hook out in the water and expect to catch fish. You have to put bait on the hook, and a good fisherman knows different fish like different kinds of bait.

Just like a fisherman knows how to bait different kinds of fish, Satan knows just how to bait you. He knows your favorite flavors and what gets your attention. He knows exactly where your weak spot is—that unmet emotional need, that empty tank, that deep desire.

That’s why you’ve got to think about what you’re thinking about. The hook is sin, but the bait is whatever lie Satan wants you to believe he knows you’re vulnerable to: If you do this, you’ll feel better. If you do this, it will be rewarding. If you do this, everything will be okay.

Even when you know there’s a hook beneath the bait, you may still keep nibbling. Why? Because you buy whatever lie Satan is feeding you. If you think you can keep nibbling without getting hooked, you’re just fooling yourself. The idea that you won’t get hurt is another one of Satan’s lies.

One of the most common lies is that, whenever you’re tempted, something outside of yourself has tempted you. But the real problem is not external.

James 1:14 says, “Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away” (NLT).

Temptation starts with our inner desires—those vulnerable spots Satan uses for bait. Those desires lead to sinful actions, and those actions lead to death. What you think determines how you feel, and what you feel determines how you act.

Don’t get in the habit of blaming your circumstances. When you’re tempted, you may think you can’t help it. You canhelp it! It starts by changing the way you think.

When you’re tempted, stop and ask the question, “What lie am I believing?”

Then replace it with God’s truth. It will always lead to life.

PLAY today’s audio teaching from Pastor Rick >>

Talk It Over

What lies do you think Satan knows you’re vulnerable to?
When was a time you thought you could control yourself when you “nibbled” at temptation? What was the result?
How can you remind yourself of God’s truth when you’re tempted?

God loves you, no matter what you’ve done.

Because we’re human, we’ve taken Satan’s bait and been hooked into sin more times than we can count. But no matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been, you’ve got a place in God’s forever family ready and waiting for you. The invitation is wide open. Just believe and receive.

Are you ready? Here’s a prayer you can start with: “Dear God, I know that when I die I’m going to give an account of my life to you directly. I confess I have ignored you. I know I have sinned against you, and I have lived by my plan, not yours. I want that to change, starting right now. I want to turn away from my sins toward you.

“Thank you for sending Jesus to die for all that I’ve done wrong so I don’t have to pay the penalty. I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness. I know only your grace can save me, Lord.

“Jesus, thank you for loving me so much that you took all my guilt on yourself. You made me acceptable for heaven, and I humbly ask you to save me. I ask you to save me from the sins and the habits that are messing up my life right now. I believe in you, Jesus. And I believe you will keep your promise to save me instantly, certainly, completely, and eternally. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

If you prayed the prayer above, please write and tell me at Rick@PastorRick.com. I’d like to send you some materials as you begin your journey with Jesus.

You Need to Think About What You Think About

“Fools will believe anything, but the wise think about what they do.”

Proverbs 14:15 (NCV)

Every behavior is based on a belief.

If you act scared, it’s because you believe scary thoughts at that moment. If you act resentful, it’s because you believe you’ve been devalued, and so you’re going to defend yourself. If you’re acting prideful, it may be because you believe you’re not good enough, so you’re trying to compensate by being boastful.

If there is a behavior in your life you don’t like, go to the source and change the thought behind it. God says in Haggai 1:5, “Carefully consider your ways!” (GW).

Ask yourself: Why do I act that way with this person? Why do I act this way at work or school? Why do I act this way with certain neighbors? What thought triggered that response? What assumption is behind that action? What belief is beneath that behavior?

Have you ever been in this kind of conflict with your spouse or significant other: It starts off simple enough—but before you know it, something in the argument triggers your emotions, and you go from zero to 100 in emotional intensity in two seconds? Then you’re out of control, upset, nervous, or fearful. You may start sweating, or your voice may rise. Maybe tears start coming down your cheeks.

Something in that moment tapped into an unspoken belief. You may believe the other person is going to leave you. You may believe you haven’t been heard. You may believe your idea isn’t being given validation and you’re not being treated with respect. You believe something that suddenly triggered an emotional response.

If you’re ever in a situation like that, you need to ask this question: What am I believing right now? You need to examine the beliefs beneath your behavior.

The Bible says in Proverbs 14:15, “Fools will believe anything, but the wise think about what they do” (NCV).

To grow in any area of life, examine what’s going on in your mind. Start thinking about what you’re thinking about so your thoughts can lead to healthy, purposeful action.

¿Has aceptado a Jesús como tú Señor y Salvador?

When You’re Bullied, Remember Who You Are

“Dear children, you belong to God. So you have won the victory over these people, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”

1 John 4:4 (GW)

What is your identity? If you are a Christian, then you are a son or daughter of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. You are a part of God’s family. You were created in his image. God loves you. He made you for a purpose, and he has a plan for your life.

You need to remember who you are when you’re harassed or bullied. Why? Because bullies can smell weakness, insecurity, and low self-esteem a mile away. Bullies don’t usually go after confident or self-assured people. They look for someone who is feeling down or insecure or weak. They want to pick off people when they’re in their most vulnerable moments.

Who are you? You are not what other people say you are. You are who God says you are. God always speaks the truth, and it is the truth that sets you free and gives you confidence and courage. You’re going to be vulnerable to deception and manipulation until you’re confident in who you are. You need to settle today the issue of your identity and who you are in Jesus Christ because it will shape every area of your life.

God is your Creator. Jesus died for you. The Holy Spirit lives in you. You have the Trinity behind you. You don’t have to worry about bullies, because bullies have no real power over you.

The Bible says, “Dear children, you belong to God. So you have won the victory over these people, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4 GW). Satan may be trying to take you down through a bully. But the One who is in you is greater than he that is in the world.

Remember your identity, which is what David, one of the great Israelite kings, did when he wrote: “When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. I praise God for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me?” (Psalm 56:3-4 NLT).

If God is on your side, it doesn’t matter who’s against you. You may have heard the phrase, “One plus God equals a majority.”

If God is for you, what can people do to you that would change who you are and how God feels about you?

Not a thing.

Talk It Over

Choose one of the Bible verses from today’s Daily Hope devotional. Begin memorizing it today so it will encourage you when you are bullied.
What, besides Jesus Christ, have you based your identity on? How did or does it affect your confidence?
What does Psalm 56:4 mean when it says, “What can mere mortals do to me?” (NLT)? Does being a Christian mean you will never experience physical or emotional pain?

How to Join God’s Family

Today you’ve read about how—if you’re a Christian—your identity is as a son or daughter of God. If you haven’t yet made that decision to follow Christ, God invites you to join his family today.

The Bible says all people fall short of God’s perfect standard. Yet God still loves you—even though you sin and you’re flawed. In fact, God loves you so much that he sent his Son, Jesus, to cleanse you from your sins and to bring you into the family of God.

If you’re ready to enter God’s family, here’s a prayer you can start with: “Dear God, I know that when I die I’m going to give an account of my life to you directly. I confess I have ignored you. I know I have sinned against you, and I have lived by my plan, not yours. I want that to change, starting right now. I want to turn away from my sins toward you.

“Thank you for sending Jesus to die for all I’ve done wrong so I don’t have to pay the penalty.

¿Qué mal hábito has dejado que te defina?
