You Cannot Outgive God

“‘Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,’ says the LORD Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.’”

Malachi 3:10 (NIV)

The Bible says there’s only one way you can test God: through giving, specifically through tithing.

Malachi 3:9-10 says, “‘You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it’” (NIV).

I’ll never forget the first time I let God test my faith about giving. I was 19 years old, in college, and in debt. I owed my school $500 that was due at the end of the month. I owed 10 bucks to a friend. And all I had was $50 in the bank. I knew I couldn’t pay my debts, so I thought, “God says to put him to the test. I may as well try it.”

So I took the $50 out of the bank and decided I was going to send it to a Christian organization. I chose the American Bible Society, which prints Bibles and gives them away. I included a little note that said, “Whoever opens this letter, would you pray for me? I’m a poor, starving college student, and I’ve got some personal debts I need to pay off. I’m just trusting that God, when I put him first in my life, will meet all my needs. Please pray!” I didn’t know what was going to happen.

About three weeks later I got invited to speak at a church for a weekend youth event. On Sunday the pastor said, “We took up an offering for you, Rick.” I was really just there to help and had a great time. I never thought about getting paid! I waited until I was back at the dorm to open it. Inside was $561. I gave the college $500. I gave my friend $10. And I took the $51 and gave it back to God as a tithe. I was still poor, but I wasn’t in debt!

Since then, I’ve seen God do this hundreds of times.

You say you trust God with your salvation, forgiveness, freedom, and future in heaven—but do you trust him with your finances? If not, what’s the logic of that?

When it comes to your finances, you have to decide: Do you trust God to keep his promises? After a lifetime of following him, I promise he will!

La Fe Real Es Más Que Solo Creer

“Tú dices tener fe porque crees que hay un solo Dios.  ¡Bien hecho! Aun los demonios lo creen y tiemblan aterrorizados. ¡Qué tontería! ¿Acaso no te das cuenta de que la fe sin buenas acciones es inútil?” Santiago 2:19-20 (NTV)

¿Sabías que el Diablo cree en Jesús? También los demonios. Pero no encontrarás a ninguno de ellos en el cielo.

¿Por qué? Porque decir que crees en Jesús no significa que tienes fe en Él. Tampoco significa que tú confías en que Él cumplirá sus promesas.

Santiago dice que la fe es más que conocimiento intelectual solamente. Fe es algo que tú haces. Es activa, no pasiva. Una fe real envuelve hacer un compromiso de confiar en Jesús.

Ahora, esto no significa que podemos ganar nuestra salvación. La Biblia dice, “Porque por gracia sois salvos por medio de la fe… no por obras, para que nadie se gloríe” Efesios 2:8-9 (RVR1960).

Lo que Santiago estaba tratando de decir es que nuestra creencia y compromiso hacia Jesús se refleja en las cosas que hacemos. Nuestras buenas obras son evidencia de que nuestra fe es real y sólida.

Quizás has estado luchando para tratar de comprender por qué tu relación con Jesús parece no estar funcionando. ¿Podría ser que no has estado poniendo tu fe en práctica?

La Biblia dice, “Porque como el cuerpo sin espíritu está muerto, así también la fe sin obras está muerta” Santiago 2:26 (RVR1960). La palabra que ves a Santiago usar una y otra vez es “hacer”. Su mensaje es muy claro: una fe real se muestra en tu estilo de vida. Tu fe debería cambiarte a ti y las cosas que haces.

¿Qué puedes hacer hoy para demostrar a otros tu fe en Jesús? ¿Cómo puedes servirles, apoyarles, alentarles o incluso mostrarles cómo tu fe te está cambiando?

No hay mejor momento que ahora mismo de tomar una posición firme por Cristo Jesús y demostrar tu fe. Como 1 Corintios 16:13-14 dice, “Estén alerta. Permanezcan firmes en la fe. Sean Valientes. Sean Fuertes. Y hagan todo con amor” (NTV).

Reflexiona sobre esto:

¿Cómo la fe y las obras son ambas partes de una vida cristiana en crecimiento?¿Cuáles son algunas formas en las que tu vida demuestra que tienes una relación significativa con Jesús?

La Biblia es clara en cuanto a que somos salvos por medio de la fe en Jesús, no hay nada más que añadir a esto: “Dios los salvó por su gracia cuando creyeron. Ustedes no tienen ningún mérito en esto; es un regalo de Dios. La salvación no es un premio por las cosas buenas que hayamos hecho, así que ninguno de nosotros puede jactarse de ser salvo” Efesios 2:8-9 (NTV).

Pero, por medio de nuestra fe, Dios nos transforma de manera que nuestras actitudes y acciones se convierten en evidencia de nuestra confianza en Él. Efesios 2:10 dice, “Pues somos la obra maestra de Dios. Él nos creó de nuevo en Cristo Jesús, a fin de que hagamos las cosas buenas que preparó para nosotros tiempo atrás” (NTV).

Generosity Leads to Joy

“There is more happiness in giving than in receiving.”

Acts 20:35 (GNT)

Do you want to be known as a joyful person? I don’t mean someone who is always happy. That’s just not possible. I mean someone who has the joy of the Lord, whose hope is not shaken by life’s ups and downs. A joyful person sees God at work, even in their trials.

This is how you become a joyful person: Jesus said in Acts 20:35, “There is more happiness in giving than in receiving” (GNT).

I’ve always loved this verse because it’s so honest. Does Jesus say there’s no happiness in receiving? No. There is happiness in receiving. But Jesus says there’s more happiness in giving.

That’s the exact opposite of the way the world thinks. Most of the world thinks there’s more happiness in getting. The more you get, the happier you’ll be. But Jesus doesn’t think like the world. He knows you are most like him when you are giving—and that giving produces joy.

When people visit Saddleback Church, they notice it’s a joyful church. Do you know why? Because it’s a generous church. People love to give! And when you’re generous, it results in joy. It feels good to give.

God wants us as individuals and churches to be more generous, because it makes us more like him. He uses our giving to bless others. And, in turn, he uses our generosity to bless us.

Do you want your family to be more joyful? Then be more generous as a family. Do you want to be a more joyful person? Then be more generous as a person.

Your joy will be a light to those around you who do not know Jesus. Your generosity will be a blessing.

La Verdad Sobre las Sombras

“Aun si voy por valles tenebrosos, no temo peligro alguno porque tú estás a mi lado; tu vara de pastor me reconforta”. Salmo 23:4 (NVI)

Una de las fuentes comunes de estrés es la pérdida. Puedes perder tu trabajo, tu salud, tu dinero, tu reputación o un ser querido. Y la pandemia de COVID-19 probablemente amplifica el estrés.

Cuando las personas pasan por una pérdida, hay dos reacciones comunes. Una es miedo y la otro es dolor. La pena es buena. El dolor es la forma en que superamos las transiciones de la vida. De hecho, si no te afliges, ¡te atascas! El dolor no te matará si lo dejas salir.

El miedo, por otro lado, puede ser algo malo. Ni una sola vez en la Biblia dice: “No te aflijas”, “No te entristezcas”, “No llores” o “No te agobies”. Lo que sí dice es “no temas”. ¡Y dice eso 365 veces! Porque el dolor no nos paraliza, pero el miedo sí.

En el Salmo 23:4, David dice: “Aun si voy por valles tenebrosos, no temo peligro alguno porque tú estás a mi lado; tu vara de pastor me reconforta” (NVI).

David sabía que los pastores siempre llevaban una vara y un bastón para proteger a sus ovejas. Y sabía que Dios tenía el poder de protegerlo. Entonces David confió en Dios, incluso en los valles más oscuros.

Estamos atravesando colectivamente un valle oscuro en este momento, y podemos elegir confiar en Dios, incluso en las sombras, donde no tiene sentido y cuando puede parecer un largo camino fuera del valle.

Pero, aquí están las buenas noticias para recordar sobre sombras grandes y aterradoras. No puedes tener una sombra sin luz. Si ves una sombra, eso significa que hay una luz que brilla cerca.

Entonces, la clave cuando atraviesas el valle de la sombra es darle la espalda a la sombra y mirar la luz. Porque mientras mantengas tus ojos en la luz, Jesús, la luz del mundo, la sombra no te asustará.

Al igual que David, confía en Dios en los valles oscuros y ora: “Cuando me siento agobiado, solo tú sabes qué camino debo tomar” Salmo 142:3 (NTV).

Your Heart Is Where Your Time and Money Are

“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Matthew 6:21 (NIV)

The Bible says, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21 NIV).

So where is your heart today?

It’s simple, really. Your heart is wherever you put your money and time. For some of you, your heart is in your home—because that’s where you put your money. Maybe your heart is in your boat. Or your cabin. Or the sport you spend your time and money on.

Wherever you put your money is where your heart is going to go. Do you want to get interested in a particular company? Buy some stock. From the moment you buy it, you’ll be very interested in that company. But when your money—your treasure—isn’t there, you will likely never think about the company.

Where you spend your time also reveals your priorities. You say you love your kids, but do you spend time with your kids? No? Then you don’t really love them the way you think you do. You can say you love to be in shape, but do you exercise? No? Then you don’t really love being in shape.

You can say you love Jesus, but if you don’t spend any time with him, then you don’t love him as much as you think you do.

Here’s how you know what’s really important to someone: Look at their calendar, and look at their bank statement. The way you spend your time and money shows what’s really important to you.

You can say, “This is really important to me.” But what you say in this case doesn’t really matter. If you don’t spend time on it and you don’t spend money on it, then your heart isn’t really there.

When you give to God, guess where your heart goes? It turns toward him and the things he loves. When you spend time with God, you become closer to him as you know him more. Giving God your time and money is an act of worship—it’s a way you align your heart with his.

Where is your heart today? Where do you want it to be? Decide where you want your heart to be and start investing your time and money there. Soon you’ll find your heart there too.

Dios Puede Usar Los Tiempos Oscuros Para Bien

“Por todos lados nos presionan las dificultades, pero no nos aplastan. Estamos perplejos, pero no caemos en la desesperación. Somos perseguidos, pero nunca abandonados por Dios. Somos derribados, pero no destruidos”. 2 Corintios 4:8-9 (NTV)

Ninguno de nosotros está exento de sufrimiento, soledad, desánimo o crítica injusta. ¿Por qué?

Porque esas son cosas que Jesús experimentó, y necesitamos experimentarlas también para que Dios desarrolle el carácter de Cristo en nosotros.

¿Significa esto que Dios causa tragedias? No. Dios es bueno y no causará mal ni hará el mal. Pero Dios puede usar tiempos oscuros y estresantes como estos para siempre. Él puede usar nuestros problemas actuales para enseñarnos a confiar en Él, para mostrarnos cómo ayudar a los demás y para acercarnos a otros creyentes.

La Biblia dice en 2 Corintios 4:8-9: “Por todos lados nos presionan las dificultades, pero no nos aplastan. Estamos perplejos, pero no caemos en la desesperación. Somos perseguidos, pero nunca abandonados por Dios. Somos derribados, pero no destruidos” (NTV).

Entonces, ¿qué debes hacer cuando atraviesas tiempos difíciles?

Primero, rehúsate a desanimarte. Entonces, recuerda que Dios está contigo. Finalmente, confía en la protección y guía de Dios.

La luz de Dios brilla incluso en las sombras más oscuras.

Humility Leads to Happiness

“Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.”

Philippians 2:6-8 (NLT)

Happiness comes from harmony, and harmony comes from humility. Jesus is your ultimate example of humility. So if you want to be a happy, humble person, you have to learn to ask yourself: “What would Jesus do?”

What would Jesus do in this problem? What would Jesus do for that person who’s hurting? What would Jesus do at the office, on the golf course, or in your marriage?

When you ask what Jesus would do, your answer will always be a humble one that builds harmony and happiness rather than difficulty, defeat, bitterness, and resentment.

So, what does it mean to act like Jesus?

1. Don’t demand what you think you deserve. Philippians 2:6 says, “Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to” (NLT).

Do you know how countercultural it is to give up your right to something? Yes, you have rights, but demanding your rights isn’t the best way to get your needs met. You can be tender without surrender; you can be understanding without demanding.

2. Look for ways you can serve. Philippians 2:7 says, “Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being” (NLT).

If you want to be like Jesus, you have to learn to serve. If you’re uncertain how or where to serve, analyze your SHAPE and look at the needs around you.

3. Do what’s right, even when it’s painful. Philippians 2:8 says, “He humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross” (NLT).

Jesus is the ultimate model of humility. In fact, Philippians goes on to say that, because of Jesus’ humility, “God elevated him to the place of highest honor” (Philippians 2:9 NLT).

When you follow Jesus’ example, God will honor your humility too with harmony and happiness.

Antes de Abrir la Palabra de Dios, Créela

“Así que quiten de su vida todo lo malo y lo sucio, y acepten con humildad la palabra que Dios les ha sembrado en el corazón, porque tiene el poder para salvar su alma”. Santiago 1:21 (NTV)

No siempre entiendes lo que la Biblia dice. Pero para anclar tu vida en el sólido fundamento de la Palabra de Dios, necesitas aceptar con humildad cualquier cosa que Dios te diga.

En el versículo de hoy, la palabra “acepten” viene de la palabra griega dechomai. Es un término para hospitalidad. Significa que recibes a un extraño. Tu estás recibiendo la Palabra de Dios completamente en tu vida. Esto significa que antes de abrir tu Biblia, le dices a Dios que aceptas cualquier cosa que Él te diga. Estás de acuerdo y crees en Su Palabra, no importando si la entiendes o no.

Mira la primera parte del versículo de hoy. Con el fin de aceptar la Palabra de Dios, primero debes tener cuidado de las cosas sucias en tu vida. ¡Y limpiarlas! Ahora, esto no significa que debes limpiar tu vida antes de venir a Dios; en lugar de eso, significa que el pecado puede impedir que escuches a Dios. No puedes oírle cuando tienes algo más llenando tu mente y corazón. Tienes que hacer espacio para la verdad. Creer y aplicar la verdad que hay en la Palabra de Dios te cambiará y te hará más como Jesús.

En la Biblia, Dios a menudo compara la aceptación de su Palabra con la jardinería. Él quiere que aceptemos las semillas que está plantando en nuestra mente y corazón. Pero antes de la siembra y el abono viene el deshierbe. Antes de reunirte con Dios, debes sacar la basura emocional y espiritual de tu vida. Lo haces al confesar y al alejarte del pecado. Admites a Dios lo que has hecho que va en contra de su Palabra.

Entonces, a través de la aceptación y la confesión, Dios puede producir el fruto de la obediencia en tu vida.

5 Ways Couples Can Grow Spiritually Together

“Keep your roots deep in him, build your lives on him, and become stronger in your faith.”

Colossians 2:7 (GNT)

You can do many different things to keep your marriage growing. You can show affection, act unselfishly, and forgive each other. But by far the most important decision you and your spouse can make in your marriage is to remain committed to following Jesus together.

The Bible says, “Keep your roots deep in him, build your lives on him, and become stronger in your faith” (Colossians 2:7 GNT). Both you and your spouse may have committed your lives to Jesus at some point, but you need to ask yourself, “Are we continuing to live out our faith as a couple?”

Here are some practical ways you can follow Jesus together (many of these ideas can apply to other family relationships too):

1. Get baptized together. If you haven’t done so already, publicly identify yourself as a Christian. If Jesus is going to be the center of your marriage, it only makes sense that you both tell the world you’re following him. I love to see husbands and wives get baptized together. It’s a wonderful way to declare you’re committing your lives and marriage to Jesus.

2. Get in a small group together. Challenge your marriage spiritually by connecting with other Christian couples. As you learn together to apply God’s Word to your marriages and lives, you’ll sharpen one another spiritually. You’ll also be challenging each other to serve in ministry and share your faith regularly. Growing as a follower of Christ and as a spouse requires consistent accountability from other believers.

3. Renew your wedding vows. If you’ve committed your life to Jesus or renewed your commitment in a meaningful way since you first said your wedding vows, consider renewing those vows. It’s likely they’ll mean something different to you today.

4. Pray for and with each other. “Make this your common practice: Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you can live together whole and healed” (James 5:16 The Message). Who doesn’t want a marriage where you live together whole and healed? The Bible says this can happen when you confess to one another when you’re wrong and pray for and with each other.

5. Follow God’s Word. When couples read God’s Word together and apply it to their lives, it transforms their relationship and establishes a firm foundation for a lifetime together.

Your marriage may be going through a difficult season, but there’s still hope. Your marriage can find life again. But it has to start with you putting Jesus at the center of it. Do what God tells you to do in his Word, and your marriage can start growing again.

Jesus is the glue for any marriage. When everything else is tearing you apart and you feel like giving up, he will hold you together.

Cinco Maneras en que la Palabra de Dios es un Regalo

“Todo lo que es bueno y perfecto es un regalo que desciende a nosotros de parte de Dios nuestro Padre, quien creó todas las luces de los cielos. Él nunca cambia ni varía como una sombra en movimiento. Él, por su propia voluntad, nos hizo nacer de nuevo por medio de la palabra de verdad”. Santiago 1:17-18 (NTV)

Si vas a anclar tu alma a algo que nunca cambia, entonces debes tratar la Palabra de Dios como un regalo. La Biblia dice, “Todo lo que es bueno y perfecto es un regalo que desciende a nosotros de parte de Dios nuestro Padre, quien creó todas las luces de los cielos. Él nunca cambia ni varía como una sombra en movimiento. Él, por su propia voluntad, nos hizo nacer de nuevo por medio de la palabra de verdad” Santiago 1:17-18 (NTV).

Santiago dice cinco cosas importantes acerca de la Palabra de Dios en este pasaje.

La Palabra de Dios es buena.
Está para tu beneficio. Si no estás leyendo la Biblia, te estás perdiendo todas las promesas, la instrucción y los beneficios que Dios quiere darte. La Palabra de Dios es perfecta.
Es un “regalo perfecto”. Si es perfecta, significa que es infalible. No hay error en ella, Puedes contar con ello. Y, si es perfecta, significa que tiene exactamente lo que necesitas. La Palabra de Dios es verdad.
Dice, “la Palabra de verdad”. La escritura siempre te dirá las cosas correctas para hacer. Nunca te guiará en la dirección incorrecta. Siempre es correcta. ¡Y la verdad te hará libre! La Palabra de Dios no cambia.
La Biblia dice que Dios nunca cambia, y que su Palabra nunca cambia. Algunos regalos que recibes en la vida se desgastan —se desvanecen, se oxidan y se descomponen. Nunca puedes depender de ellos, pero siempre puedes depender de la Palabra de Dios. La Palabra de Dios da vida.
Santiago dice, “(Dios) nos hizo nacer de nuevo por medio de la palabra de verdad”. Fuiste hecho a la imagen de Dios, lo cual significa que tienes la habilidad de amarlo y de ser amado por Él. Dios te creó y te dio su Palabra para que puedas conocerle. Es el único camino para la vida verdadera.

“De hecho, todo lo que se escribió en el pasado se escribió para enseñarnos, a fin de que, alentados por las Escrituras, perseveremos en mantener nuestra esperanza” Romanos 15:4 (NVI). Todo en la Biblia fue escrito para darte esperanza, incluso las partes que tal vez no entiendes.

La única cosa que puedes necesitar en este momento —aliento— está en este libro.
