To Grow Spiritually, You Need Other People

“Put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”

Ephesians 4:24 (NIV)

As I mentioned yesterday, your character is essentially the sum of your habits; it’s how you habitually act. The Bible says, “Put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:24 NIV).

You form your habits through your time in God’s Word, your time with people, and the way you face your circumstances. All three are indispensable for character development. God’s Word provides the truth you need to grow. God’s people provide the support you need. And circumstances provide the environment to practice Christlikeness.

If you study and apply God’s Word, connect regularly with other believers, and learn to trust God in difficult circumstances, I guarantee you will become more like Jesus.

Many people assume they just need solitary Bible study and prayer for spiritual growth. But some issues in life will never be changed by solo Bible study or individual prayer. God uses people. God often chooses to do his work through people so that we will learn to depend on each other. He wants his children to grow together.

In many religions, the people considered to be the most spiritually mature and holy are those who isolate themselves—they live in mountaintop monasteries, uninfected by contact with other people.

But this is a gross misunderstanding. Spiritual maturity is not a solitary, individual pursuit!

You cannot grow to Christlikeness in isolation. You must be around other people and interact with them. You need to be part of a church and community.

Why? Because true spiritual maturity is all about learning to love like Jesus. You can’t practice being like Jesus without being in relationship with other people.

Remember, the Christian life is all about love—loving God and loving others.

La Mejor Manera de Comenzar y Terminar tu Día

“La gente no vive solo de pan, sino de cada palabra que sale de la boca de Dios”. Mateo 4:4 (NTV)

Durante estos días de incertidumbre y malestar, es importante comenzar y terminar el día recargando tu alma. Tu alma es la forma en que piensas, sientes y eliges. Así como tu cuerpo físico necesita ser alimentado todos los días para mantenerte saludable, lo mismo le sucede a tu alma. Si no estás alimentando tu alma, vas a estar agotado emocional y espiritualmente.

¿Cómo recargas tu alma? Entrando en la Palabra de Dios todos los días. Jesús dijo: “La gente no vive solo de pan, sino de cada palabra que sale de la boca de Dios” Mateo 4:4 (NTV). ¡La Biblia es vida!  No solo la lees cuando tienes un problema y necesitas un consejo. No solo la abres cuando necesitas ser levantado. Te alimentas de ella todos los días para que estés constantemente nutrido y creciendo en verdad y amor.

No comiences tu día navegando en tu teléfono o escuchando las noticias. No dejes que lo último que llene tu mente cada día sea algo en la televisión. Ninguna de esas cosas va a alimentar tu alma.

Si solo desarrollas un nuevo hábito durante esta pandemia, que ese hábito sea comenzar y terminar tu día en la Palabra de Dios. Dondequiera que dejes tu Biblia déjala abierta si puedes. Si la Biblia está cerrada, tendrás la tendencia a pasarla por alto. Pero si  la dejas abierta en donde leíste la última vez, te será más fácil recordar que debes ser consistente en la lectura de la Biblia.

No importa cuánto tiempo leas. Importa cómo dejas que la Palabra de Dios te cambie: cómo te ves a ti mismo y a los demás a la luz del amor de Dios, cómo veas tus circunstancias y cómo tu relación con Dios se vuelve más profunda y crece.

“El Señor Soberano me ha dado sus palabras de sabiduría, para que yo sepa consolar a los fatigados. Mañana tras mañana me despierta y me abre el entendimiento a su voluntad”  Isaías 50:4 (NTV).

¿Estás cansado y exhausto? Nutre tu alma y mantente emocionalmente saludable al comenzar y terminar cada día con la Palabra de Dios.

¿Cuáles son tus metas espirituales para este año? ¿Cómo quieres haber crecido en tu camino cristiano durante esta pandemia?¿Cómo necesitas ajustar tu horario para que tengas tiempo para estudiar la Biblia y también cuidar de tu salud física?¿Has sido cambiado más por el mundo o por la Palabra de Dios durante esta pandemia?

Obedience Unlocks God’s Power

“Let the Spirit change your way of thinking.”

Ephesians 4:23 (CEV)

Over and over again, the Bible illustrates this important truth: The Holy Spirit releases his power the moment you take a step of faith.

When Joshua faced a seemingly impassible barrier, the floodwaters of the Jordan River receded—but only after the leaders stepped into the rushing current in obedience and faith. Obedience unlocks God’s power.

In these situations, God’s power follows your action. But you don’t have to wait until you feel powerful or confident. Just move ahead in your weakness; do the right thing, despite your fears and feelings. This is how you cooperate with the Holy Spirit; it’s how your character develops and how you grow spiritually.

The Bible compares spiritual growth to a seed, a building, and a child growing up. Each metaphor requires active participation: Seeds must be planted and cultivated, buildings must be built—they don’t just appear—and children must eat and exercise to grow.

Effort has nothing to do with your salvation—but effort is essential to your spiritual growth. At least seven times the New Testament tells you to “make every effort” in your growth toward becoming like Jesus (Luke 13:24, Romans 14:19, Ephesians 4:3, 2 Timothy 2:15, Hebrews 4:11, Hebrews 12:14, 2 Peter 3:14).

You can’t just sit around and wait for it to happen. You need to act.

Paul explains in Ephesians 4 your three responsibilities in becoming like Christ.

First, choose to let go of old ways of acting. “Everything—and I do mean everything—connected with that old way of life has to go. It’s rotten through and through. Get rid of it!”  (Ephesians 4:22 The Message). Your new life is based on God’s truth and living according to his Word. That means there may be some behaviors you need to change in your life.

Second, change the way you think. “Let the Spirit change your way of thinking” (Ephesians 4:23 CEV).

The Bible says you are “transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2 NIV). The Greek word for “transformed” is metamorphosis. It’s used today to describe the amazing change a caterpillar goes through in becoming a butterfly. It is a beautiful picture of what happens spiritually when you allow God to direct your thoughts. You’re changed from the inside out. You become more beautiful, and you’re set free to soar to new heights.

Third, put on the character of Christ by developing new, godly habits. Your character is essentially the sum of your habits; it’s how you habitually act. The Bible says, “Put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:24 NIV).

Don’t just sit around and wait for spiritual growth to happen—it never will on its own. Instead, be obedient so that you can unlock God’s power in your life!

La Gracia es Necesaria Ahora Más que Nunca

“Y él da gracia con generosidad. Como dicen las Escrituras: ‘Dios se opone a los orgullosos pero da gracia a los humildes”. Santiago 4:6 (NTV)

Para lograrlo a través de la extraordinaria crisis de la pandemia y malestar social, necesitas tratarte a ti y a otros de la forma como Dios te trata: con gracia, misericordia y perdón.

Gracia significa que Dios siempre te da lo que necesitas, no lo que mereces. Si obtuvieras lo que mereces, ni siquiera estarías aquí. Y él da gracia con generosidad. Como dicen las Escrituras: ‘Dios se opone a los orgullosos, pero da gracia a los humildes” Santiago 4:6 (NTV).

Dios se opone a los orgullosos y arrogantes porque ellos piensan que pueden hacer las cosas por sí solos, separados de Dios. Ellos no piensan que necesitan a Dios o su gracia. Ellos enfrentan la vida —incluso en las turbulencias— con la mentalidad, ‘Si así debe ser, depende de mí”.

Pero cuando eres humilde y admites que no puedes lograrlo por ti mismo, Dios abre las compuertas del cielo. Él derrama su gracia. Y Él espera que aquellos a quienes se les ha mostrado su asombrosa gracia muestren esa gracia a otros.

Todos están pasando tiempos difíciles ahora mismo. Para mantener tu salud emocional, necesitas ser menos severo contigo mismo y con los demás. Todos se sienten estresados, particularmente los millones de personas que están sin trabajo y preocupados sobre su futuro, quizás incluso pensando cómo van a lograrlo hasta el próximo día. Sé amable. Sé gentil. Aún las personas más difíciles de amar están pasando por algún tipo de batalla ahora mismo y necesitan tu gracia.

Esto muchas veces requerirá de bastante humildad. Con las tensiones altas, es más fácil ahora mismo devolver mal por mal, responder con aspereza, no darles a los demás el beneficio de la duda, y hablar antes de escuchar.

Tu vecino necesita tu gracia. Tus hijos necesitan tu gracia. La persona con la que tienes desacuerdos políticos necesita tu gracia. El mundo está a la defensiva, y no hay nada que desarme más a las personas que recibir una gracia inesperada.

Dios te ha dado montones de gracia. Ve y extiende esa gracia a otros para que echen un vistazo de lo que Jesús ha hecho por ellos.

Muchas de las conversaciones que necesitas tener ahora se enfocan en temas sensibles. ¿Cómo la humildad y la gracia pueden hacer esas conversaciones más productivas?¿Por qué la gracia es tan inesperada para la mayoría de las personas?¿Cuál es un área de tu vida donde necesitas mostrar más gracia? Insecure? Remember Whose You Are

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”

John 8:12 (NIV)

When Jesus said, “I am the light of the world”, he was defining himself. He was saying, “I know who I am.”

At least 18 times in the Bible, Jesus said, “I am”—and then gave a description. He described himself as the door, the bread of life, the way, the truth, the resurrection, and the life. Over and over, he defined himself. Jesus knew who he was (and still is) and, as a result, he was not under pressure.

Jesus understood his identity—and it’s crucial that you understand yours too.

When you’re unsure about your identity, you’ll be pressured to fit into other people’s molds. They will try to make you what they think you should be, rather than who God made you to be.

Stress comes from trying to be somebody you’re not—when you fear you’ll accidentally drop your façade and people will discover who you really are.

The way to counterbalance external pressures is to have an internal sense of satisfaction about who God made you to be. You discover who you are by knowing whose you are.

The Bible says you were created by God. You are deeply loved by him. You are accepted as you are. He has a plan for your life. When you understand this, you’ll find yourself free to serve other people.

Jesus constantly did things that surprised everyone else—because he was free; he felt no pressure to meet people’s expectations. He chose to serve others, regardless of how it might be perceived. He washed his disciples’ feet—something they were too insecure to do for each other. Jesus always served from a position of strength. He knew who and whose he was.

Do you want to live in the same freedom Jesus did? Find security in knowing that you are a dearly loved and accepted child of God. There’s no need to pretend to be anyone else.

Cómo Superar El Pecado Del Prejuicio

“Por supuesto, hacen bien cuando obedecen la ley suprema tal como aparece en las Escrituras: ‘Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo’; pero si favorecen más a algunas personas que a otras, cometen pecado. Son culpables de violar la ley”. Santiago 2:8-9 (NTV)

El prejuicio es un pecado serio. No es una simple infracción a la que Dios le guiña el ojo. Llamarlo de otra manera aparte de un pecado sería ir en contra de lo que la Biblia enseña. “Por supuesto, hacen bien cuando obedecen la ley suprema tal como aparece en las Escrituras: ‘Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo’; pero si favorecen más a algunas personas que a otras, cometen pecado. Son culpables de violar la ley” Santiago 2:8-9 (NTV)

Está bastante claro. Pero a medida que he viajado alrededor del mundo, he llegado a la conclusión de que el prejuicio, particularmente el prejuicio racial, pudiera ser el pecado más predominante del mundo. No importa a donde vayas en el mundo, a alguien no le gusta alguien más. Lo puedes encontrar en todas partes. Y como se manifiesta de maneras incontables en la sociedad, muchas personas pudieran negar que tienen algún prejuicio en contra de otros.

Para moverse hacia la superación racial, tenemos que admitir y confesar nuestros prejuicios. ¿Por qué? Porque el racismo es un problema de pecado, no un problema de piel. Esto no es un problema menor para Dios. Esto está en el corazón del Evangelio.

Como muchas personas, posiblemente te criaron para desconfiar o mantenerte alejado de aquello que es diferente. Tú posiblemente te sientes más cómodo con personas parecidas a ti. Esto es naturaleza humana.

Pero aún tenemos que aprender a ver a las personas de la forma como Dios lo hace. ¿Cómo aprendes a ver las personas que llegan a tu vida como Dios lo hace? “El SEÑOR no ve las cosas de la manera en que tú las ves. La gente juzga por las apariencias, pero el SEÑOR mira el corazón” 1 Samuel 16:7 (NTV). Tú tienes que mirar el corazón.

Si quieres conocer el corazón de alguien, entonces tienes que ir más allá de las bromas y las conversaciones superficiales. Necesitas conocerlos. Necesitas hacer preguntas y ser un buen oyente. Tienes que ser empático y lleno de gracia.

Comienza con tu corazón. Confiesa el pecado del prejuicio. Luego, pídele ayuda a Dios para ver a las personas como Él las ve y que te use para ayudar a reconciliar a personas unas con otras, y lo más importante, con Él.

Reflexiona sobre esto:

¿Cuál es tu reacción cuando las personas inician una conversación sobre raza? ¿Qué piensas que es la primera cosa que Dios desea que hagas cuando las personas comparten sus experiencias con el prejuicio?Para verdaderamente aprender algo, necesitas practicarlo activamente. ¿Cuáles son algunas maneras en las que puedes practicar la reconciliación racial esta semana?

Ama a tu Prójimo como a ti Mismo

Santiago nos dice que para movernos hacia la superación racial, tenemos que admitir y confesar nuestros prejuicios. ¿Por qué? Porque el racismo es un problema de pecado, no un problema de piel.

Comienza con tu corazón. Confiesa el pecado del prejuicio. Luego, pídele ayuda a Dios para ver a las personas como Él las ve y que te use para ayudar a reconciliar a personas unas con otras, y lo más importante, con Él.

Every Christian Is a Minister

“You come to him as living stones, a spiritual house that is being built into a holy priesthood.”

1 Peter 2:5 (GW)

God says you are a priest. Depending on your background, that may be scary, confusing, or exciting to you.

In the Bible, Peter says, “You come to him as living stones, a spiritual house that is being built into a holy priesthood” (1 Peter 2:5 GW). What he means is this: The spiritual benefits that priests have are now available to everyone who is a believer.

In the Old Testament, priests did two things.

First, they had the right, privilege, and responsibility to go directly to God. They could talk to God, worship God, and fellowship with God. Everyone else had to go through them.

Second, priests had the privilege and responsibility of representing God to the people and of ministering to the needs of the people—by serving them.

When you become a believer, those two things are true of you, too.

You have direct access to God. You don’t have to go through someone else to pray, confess, or fellowship with God. You can read your Bible, talk with the Lord, and fellowship directly with him.

In the biblical temple, a veil separated the Holy of Holies (where God’s Spirit was) from where people were allowed. Only priests could go behind that veil, and that just happened once a year. When Jesus died on the cross, God ripped that veil—about 70 feet—from top to bottom, symbolizing that there is no longer a barrier between God and people.

As a believer, in addition to having direct access to God, you also have been gifted for ministry—to serve other people. Every Christian isn’t a pastor, but every Christian is a minister.

Can you be a minister in a sales office? Absolutely. Can you be a minister as an accountant? Of course. Driving a truck? Sure. Any time you’re helping other people in God’s name, you’re ministering. 

The next time you’re struggling to know who you are, remember that you are a priest! You have access to God and the privilege of ministering to people.

Antídoto al Racismo: Ama Como Jesús

“Hermanos míos, ustedes que creen en nuestro Señor Jesucristo no deben favorecer más a unas personas que a otras”. Santiago 2:1 (NBV)

El racismo inicia con una falta de amor. No puedes amar a una persona como Jesús lo hace y guardar prejuicios en tu corazón contra esa persona. Eso es imposible. Debemos amar a todos como Jesús los ama.

Jesús es muy específico sobre esto en Juan 15:12: “Este es mi mandamiento: ámense unos a otros de la misma manera en que yo los he amado” (NTV). ¿Cómo nos ama Jesús? Incondicional, libre, completa y continuamente. Así que ¿cómo debes amar a otras personas, incluyendo a los de otras razas? Incondicional, libre, completa y continuamente.

Amar no significa que aprobemos todo lo que hace la otra persona. Jesús no aprueba todo lo que hacemos, pero aun así nos ama.

La Biblia dice: “Hermanos míos, ustedes que creen en nuestro Señor Jesucristo no deben favorecer más a unas personas que a otras” Santiago 2:1 (NBV). Aunque una persona parezca ser un vagabundo, debes tratar a esa persona como tratarías a un alto ejecutivo o al CEO de una empresa.

El amor es muy práctico. Una pareja que está en mi grupo pequeño tiene siete hijos, cuatro biológicos y tres por adopción de Rwanda. Conociendo que los tres niños de Rwanda posiblemente han experimentado el racismo, les pregunté recientemente cómo ellos entienden que los cristianos deberían tratar con las razas. Ellos respondieron con formas muy prácticas de amar a las personas de otras razas.

No seas ciego al color. A ellos les agrada su color, así que no tienes que ignorarlo. Solo evita tomar decisiones sobre ellos basado en su raza.No les digas a las personas que han sido tratadas injustamente que los entiendes. No los entiendes. Nadie conoce las injusticias que otros han enfrentado. Decir que sí es simplemente no darle la debida importancia.Recuerda que tu historia no es la misma de ellos. Alguien nacido en la ciudad de Chicago y una persona nacida en un rancho en Gallup, Nuevo México tienen diferentes historias. Y la historia es importante.No ignores la historia o digas “Supéralo”. El dolor importa. Estos tres niños con los que estaba hablando eran huérfanos porque a sus padres los habían matado en un genocidio. Tus padres no murieron en un genocidio. No hay forma en la que puedas entender su dolor.Lucha en contra de todos los estereotipos. Todos en este mundo se sienten estereotipados. Pero los estereotipos nunca son verdaderos. Comprometámonos a ver a cada una de las personas como individuos, no como alguien estereotipado por causa del color de su piel, credo o nacionalidad.

Juntos, cuando amamos como Jesús lo hace, podemos erradicar el racismo.

How the Cross Proves Your Value

“Come to the Lord, the living stone rejected by people as worthless but chosen by God as valuable.”

1 Peter 2:4 (GNT)

God says that you’re accepted—and that you’re valuable!

How much do you think you’re worth? I’m not talking about your net worth; I’m talking about your self-worth. Don’t ever confuse your tangible valuables with your value as a person. Being rich or poor has nothing to do with your worth as a person.

Two things determine value in life:

What someone is willing to pay for something.Who has owned it

The Bible says, “You have been bought and paid for by Christ, so you belong to him” (1 Corinthians 7:23 TLB).

You belong to God, and Jesus paid for you with his life. The cross proves your value. Nobody has ever paid a greater ransom than God paid for you! You’re acceptable, and you’re valuable.

Peter uses the imagery of a building project to illustrate your value. He paints a picture of God constructing a stone building. That building represents the church, the family of God.

Peter says, “Come to the Lord, the living stone rejected by people as worthless but chosen by God as valuable” (1 Peter 2:4 GNT). Jesus is the living stone. He was perfect, but some people still rejected him. You may think, “If I could just be perfect, then I would be accepted.” No! Jesus was perfect, but even he wasn’t accepted by everyone. Yet he was “chosen by God as valuable.”

You are one of God’s chosen, valuable stones too. When you gave your life to Christ, you became a building block in God’s great plan.

The next time you’re questioning your own self-worth, remember that Jesus thought you were worth his life, and you’re now forever part of God’s family.

Se Bendecido por el Color, No Cegado por el Color

“El SEÑOR no ve las cosas de la manera en que tú las ves. La gente juzga por las apariencias, pero el SEÑOR mira el corazón”. (1 Samuel 16:7 NTV)

Algunas personas dicen, “Cuando miro a las personas, no veo su raza. No veo su color”.  Hay una palabra para eso: ¡Mentiroso!

Nadie está ciego al color cuando se refiere a raza. Y Dios no quiere que seas ciego al color. Él quiere que seas bendecido por el color.

Dios ama el color. ¡Sólo mira afuera! Todo lo que Él hace tiene color, como el atardecer y las flores. Mira todas las diferentes personas alrededor del mundo. ¡Dios ama el color! La forma como te creó demuestra esto.

Nosotros necesitamos aprender a ver a todas las personas de la manera como Dios las ve.

La Biblia dice, “El SEÑOR no ve las cosas de la manera en que tú las ves. La gente juzga por las apariencias, pero el SEÑOR mira el corazón” 1 Samuel 16:7 (NTV).

Francamente, eso es una exigencia exagerada para muchos de nosotros. No es natural ver el interior antes que el exterior. Estamos entrenados para hacer juicios rápidos basados en la apariencia externa.

Confías en algunas personas sólo al mirarlas, pero no en otras. Los libros son juzgados por sus portadas. Los hogares son juzgados por el atractivo exterior. Las personas son juzgadas por la forma como ellos se ven, visten y hablan.

Así que pídele a Dios que te ayude para que comiences a mirar a las personas de la forma como Él las ve. Mira su corazón, no su piel.

Esto es uno de los primeros pasos para la superación del prejuicio en tu vida —y en el mundo a tu alrededor.

¿Cuándo te han juzgado por tu apariencia en vez de ser juzgado basándose en cómo eres en el interior? ¿Cómo eso te afectó?¿Qué prejuicios mayormente tienes en contra de otras personas?
