Tu Sufrimiento Puede Producir Algo de Gran Valor

“ Él, [Dios] en cambio, conoce mis caminos; si me pusiera a prueba, saldría yo puro como el oro”. Job 23:10 (NVI)

Este devocional fue escrito por Kay Warren.

Cuando estaba pasando por un tratamiento para el cáncer de mama hace algunos años, seguía pensando en Job 23:10, que dice: “Él, [Dios] en cambio, conoce mis caminos; si me pusiera a prueba, saldría yo puro como el oro” (NVI).

No tomé ese versículo como garantía de sanidad física. Dios no me debía eso. Si Dios me sanó, fue maravilloso, pero no vi que la sanidad estuviera garantizada en el versículo.

Lo que sí vi fue potencial para producir lo que llamaría “oro” en mi vida. Si pasaba por la prueba de una manera que honrara a Dios, entonces podría producirse algo hermoso. Y anhelaba que el sufrimiento por el que estaba pasando diera a luz algo hermoso, algo de valor duradero, algo tan rico como el oro.

“Estas pruebas demostrarán que su fe es auténtica. Está siendo probada de la misma manera que el fuego prueba y purifica el oro, aunque la fe de ustedes es mucho más preciosa que el mismo oro” 1 Pedro 1:7 (NTV).

Si tu fe permanece fuerte después de haber sido probada por pruebas de fuego, te traerá mucha alabanza, gloria y honor el día en que Jesucristo sea revelado al mundo entero.

El oro se produjo en el fuego del cáncer en mi vida, y sigue produciéndose en el fuego del sufrimiento y el dolor de la pérdida de mi hijo Matthew. A través del cáncer de mama, adquirí una nueva capacidad para relacionarme con personas que sufren enfermedades potencialmente mortales. Miré a la muerte a la cara y ya no tenía tanto miedo. Adquirí un nuevo aprecio por la brevedad de la vida y estaba más comprometida que nunca a vivir cada día que Dios me da con pasión y propósito.

En el dolor y la devastación de perder a Mathew, he ganado un caminar más íntimo con Jesús al aprender a confiar en Él, en el lugar más oscuro en el que he estado. Tengo un mayor anhelo por el cielo. La resurrección de Jesucristo es mi esperanza más querida. Anhelo la restauración de los cuerpos y las mentes quebrantados que tendrá lugar en el cielo. Y en mi sufrimiento, he aprendido a consolar a las personas en su sufrimiento con el consuelo que Dios me da.

Este es el oro que Dios ha producido en mi vida. Él puede hacer lo mismo en tu vida cuando le permites usar tu dolor para su gloria.

Change Is a Choice

“Throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception.”

Ephesians 4:22 (NLT)

Change requires making choices. It’s not enough to dream of changing. It’s not enough to desire change. To change, you need to make a decision. You must choose to change.

Change is intentional. Are you going to be any different in six months? Are you going to be better a year from now? Are you going to be healthier, stronger, and more mature? Are you going to be happier? Are you going to be less in debt? Are you going to be more like God wants you to be?

I can tell you the answer right now: These changes will only happen if you choose to change—because change doesn’t happen accidentally.

Change requires a choice.

A lot of times we think we’re waiting on God to change us. No! God is waiting on you. He’s waiting on you to say, “Yes, Lord, I’m willing to make these changes.”

You will need to make intentional choices in order to grow. There is no growth without change, there is no change without loss, and there is no loss without pain. If you are going to grow, you will have to change. And change means you let go of some old things in order to grab hold of some new things.

It’s like swinging on a trapeze. The trapeze artist swings out on one bar and then has to reach out and grab the other one. At some point, he’s got to let go of one to grab on to the other, or he’s not going to make it to the other side. If he thinks he can hold on to both, what happens? He gets stuck in the middle, and he’s going to fall.

Some of you are stuck in the middle, and you’re falling because you haven’t let go of the old patterns, the old habits, and the old ways of thinking. You have to let go of your old ways.

The Bible says, “Throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life” (Ephesians 4:22 NLT). In other words, let it go. Those old habits, those old hurts, those old patterns, those old sins in your life—let them go. The Bible says to throw them off and trust that God is working in you “to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose” (Philippians 2:13 NIV).

Talk It Over

What change have you been waiting on God to make in you? What do you think your responsibility is to make that change happen?
How is accountability with other believers helpful in making the choice to change and then following through on it?
What do you need to do once you make the choice to change? What steps will help you move forward?

Have you trusted Jesus for your salvation?

God wants to spend eternity with you, so he made the way to him simple: You believe, and you receive. You believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins, and you receive him into your life. God sent his Son to Earth to die for you.

No matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been, you’ve got a place in God’s forever family ready and waiting for you. The invitation is wide open. Just believe and receive.

Are you ready? Here’s a prayer you can start with:

“Dear God, I know that when I die I’m going to give an account of my life to you directly. I confess I have ignored you. I know have sinned against you, and I have lived by my plan, not yours. I want that to change, starting right now. I want to turn away from my sins and toward you.

“Thank you for sending Jesus to die for all I’ve done wrong so I don’t have to pay the penalty. I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness. I know only your grace can save me, Lord. I could never be good enough to get into a perfect place.

“Jesus, thank you for loving me so much that you took all my guilt on yourself. You made me acceptable for heaven, and I humbly ask you to save me. I ask you to save me from the sins and habits that are messing up my life right now. I believe in you, Jesus. And I believe you will keep your promise to save me instantly, certainly, completely, and eternally. In Jesus’ name. Amen."

Ten Paciencia Mientras Esperas en Dios

“Amados hermanos, tengan paciencia mientras esperan el regreso del Señor. Piensen en los agricultores, que con paciencia esperan las lluvias en el otoño y la primavera. Con ansias esperan a que maduren los preciosos cultivos. Ustedes también deben ser pacientes. Anímense, porque la venida del Señor está cerca”. Santiago 5:7-8 (NTV)

Es importante recordar que Dios siempre está trabajando detrás de escena, incluso a través de una pandemia global y cualquier otro problema que puedas estar enfrentando en este momento. Confía en Él y ten paciencia.

¿Cómo haces eso? ¿Qué haces mientras esperas? ¿Cómo se construye una fe que confía en Dios durante las demoras?

“Amados hermanos, tengan paciencia mientras esperan el regreso del Señor. Piensen en los agricultores, que con paciencia esperan las lluvias en el otoño y la primavera. Al igual que los agricultores, debes estar expectante. Mientras un granjero espera para la cosecha, él se prepara. No se sienta a pensar: “Me pregunto si esto va a crecer o no”. Tiene la expectativa de que crezca. Se prepara para la cosecha, para que cuando llegue, pueda cosechar los beneficios.

Necesitas estar expectante mientras confías en que Dios actuará y proveerá. Salmo 130:5 dice: “En Dios he puesto mi esperanza; con toda el alma confío en él, pues confío en sus promesas” (TLA). Esa promesa está en toda la Biblia, en versículos como Isaías 49:23, “Los que en mí esperan no serán avergonzados jamás” (NBV).

¿Qué has estado esperando que Dios haga? Quizás has estado esperando que Él transforme tu matrimonio, resuelva un problema financiero, sane un dolor o llegue a alguien de tu familia que no sea creyente. Sea lo que sea, que has estado esperando que Dios haga, ¿realmente espera que Él lo haga? Si no te estás preparando mientras esperas, realmente no esperes que suceda nada.

Muchas veces pensamos que estamos esperando en Dios, pero Dios solo está esperando por nosotros. Él está diciendo: “No estás listo para manejar la bendición que quiero darte. Quiero que crezcas primero. Estoy esperando por ti”.

Si estás cansado y agotado debido a esta crisis, debes recordar esperar en Dios. Necesitas estar quieto, seguir la Palabra de Dios y aprender a ser más como Él. Luego, ocuparte haciendo el trabajo para prepararte para la cosecha.

If You Want to Change, Then Face the Truth

“You have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him.”

Ephesians 4:21 (NLT)

The secret to personal change is not willpower. The secret is to know and face the truth. So, if you want to change, you must know and face the truth about yourself and your nature.

You need to face the truth about your weaknesses, your relationships, your successes, your failures, your past, and your future.

Nothing changes until you know and face the truth. And that truth is found in Jesus Christ.

Why is it necessary to learn the truth before anything can change in your life? Here’s why: Behind every self-defeating habit in your life is a lie that you believe.

If you’re in debt, it might be because you believed some lies like “I can spend and get away with it” or “I can always pay it back.” You might have overestimated how much you were going to make, or you believed the lie that you needed a much bigger house.

But do you? Are you sure it’s the truth? Can you prove it’s the truth? Are you absolutely certain that what you’ve believed about your finances is true?

What about your relationships? What about the things you say to yourself about yourself? Is the way you think about your past true? Or is the truth what God says about it?

The Bible teaches that personal change starts with truth. The truth sets you free. The apostle Paul says, “You have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him” (Ephesians 4:21 NLT).

Who is the truth? It’s Jesus. And because Jesus is the truth, he will always tell you the truth. His Word is the truth. The Bible is his Word, and that means the Bible is truth. (You can read more about that in 2 Timothy 3:16-17.)

What you hear on television or read in books won’t always help you—because it’s not always the truth. In fact, if you consistently listen to what voices around you are saying, you’ll find your life built on a foundation of lies, misconceptions, deceptions, and half-truths. And you will never change.

But what God tells you is always the truth. God’s Word shows you how to get back to the life you were created to live, and then it shows you how to stay on God’s path. This is why it is so important for you to have a daily quiet time in the Word of God. Nothing will change until you get the truth into your heart.

Choose today to face and respond to the truth. Then you’ll begin to see positive change in your life.

Talk It Over

Where, other than God’s Word, have you looked for the truth about your life? How has that failed you?
When did God’s Word help you understand a truth about yourself?
What do you need to change about your schedule and priorities so that you can spend time every day reading God’s Word?

If you haven’t trusted in Jesus and committed to following him, why wait any longer?

Your sins separate you from God. And it is only God’s grace that can get you back into right relationship with him.

The Bible says, “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV).

If you’re ready to make peace with your Creator, then pray this prayer:

“Dear Jesus, I don’t want my sin to separate me from you any longer. I’ve looked for the truth about my life in many places, but now I know the truth is only found in you. You have promised that if I believe in you, everything I’ve ever done wrong will be forgiven, I will learn the purpose of my life, and you will accept me into your eternal home in heaven one day.

“I confess my sin, and I believe you are my Savior. You have promised that if I confess my sin and trust you, I will be saved. I trust you when you say salvation comes by grace, through faith, and not by anything I do. I receive you into my life as my Lord. Today, I’m turning over every part of my life to your management.

“I want to live the way you created me to live and use the rest of my life to serve you instead of serving myself. I commit my life to you and ask you to save me and accept me into your family. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

Vale la Pena Ser Paciente

“Consideramos dichosos a los que perseveraron”. Santiago 5:11 (NVI)

Dios recompensa la paciencia. Santiago 5:11 dice, “Consideramos dichosos a los que perseveraron” (NVI). En otras palabras, vale la pena ser paciente.

Cuando eres paciente, construyes tu carácter, evitas errores y cumplirás tus metas. Cuando eres paciente, otros te van a honrar y vas a tener relaciones más felices. Hay todo tipo de bendiciones y beneficios.

¿Has notado que es difícil ser paciente cuando estás cansado? Todos nos sentimos fatigados por la incertidumbre y el descontrol de la pandemia.

“Así que no nos cansemos de hacer el bien porque, si seguimos haciéndolo, Dios nos premiará a su debido tiempo” Gálatas 6:9 (TLA).

Recibiremos bendiciones durante esta temporada de espera durante la pandemia —en tu carácter, tus circunstancias, tu familia y la iglesia de Dios. Y no son solo recompensas para disfrutar al momento. La Biblia dice que van a ser recompensas en el Cielo, también.

Jesús dijo en Mateo 5:11-12 “Dichosos serán ustedes cuando por mi causa la gente los insulte, los persiga y levante contra ustedes toda clase de calumnias. Alégrense y llénense de júbilo, porque les espera una gran recompensa en el cielo” (NVI). Cuando alguien te lastima, uno de tus deseos más fuertes es vengarte. Las personas han experimentado mucho resentimiento últimamente y esto incide en cómo elegimos responder a la pandemia. Y con eso viene mucha tentación de responder con hostilidad y contraatacar.

Cuando eres criticado y tentado a responder, piensa primero: ¿Vale la pena perder el premio prometido para ti en el cielo? No lo vale. Como líder, me critican mucho. Las personas me juzgan mal y cuestionan y dudan y creen que tengo intenciones ocultas todo el tiempo. He aprendido a no defenderme. Me mantengo quieto, porque he descubierto que eres más como Jesús cuando no te defiendes. Eres más como Jesús cuando rehúsas contraatacar.

Incluso cuando Él fue acusado y maltratado, Jesús eligió hacer lo que era correcto y no tomar represalias en medio de una crisis. Si eliges permitir que Dios controle cuando alguien te lastima, Él lo ve. Y Él te bendecirá.

What Does God Say to Lonely People?

“He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.”

Isaiah 53:3 (NIV)

If you woke up feeling lonely this morning, God has something to say to you: “I understand exactly how you feel.” God is with you during this difficult season.

If you think Jesus doesn’t understand loneliness, you’re wrong.

Jesus was despised and rejected by the people he created. He experienced loneliness throughout his entire life.

During his final hours, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. This was an emotional time for him. He knew the very next day he would be crucified on the cross, separated from his Father.

Since Jesus had a need for human companionship, he took his three best friends—Peter, James, and John—with him into the garden. He said to them, “I’m very sad . . . Stay here and keep alert with me” (Matthew 26:38 CEB).

What did they do? They fell asleep! Jesus came back and said, “Couldn’t you stay alert one hour with me?” (Matthew 26:40 CEB).

Jesus must have felt so lonely in that moment.

The next day, he was nailed to a cross, where he cried out, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” (Matthew 27:46 GW). Since Jesus was carrying the sins of the world, the Father couldn’t look at sin—at him. He was truly alone.

Jesus knows what it’s like to feel lonely. And he wants to relieve your loneliness. He cares about you and wants to help you.

Maybe loneliness isn’t an issue for you today. However, you might be surprised by who the lonely people around you are. Loneliness doesn’t care whether you’re beautiful, wealthy, successful, or popular. Even married people can be lonely; some couples never share any true intimacy, closeness, and fellowship. The pandemic has made it clear that no one is immune to loneliness. Eventually, each one of us experiences it.

If you’re lonely today, Jesus understands and he wants to give you relief. The ultimate way that Jesus can relieve your loneliness is by making you part of his family. Through his own lonely death and then his Resurrection, Jesus made it possible for you to belong to God’s family.

When you’re part of God’s family, you still may face seasons when you feel lonely. But you will never truly be alone again.

Are you ready to join God’s family?

Being a Christian doesn’t mean that you’ll never be lonely again. But it does mean that you’ll never really be alone. You’ll be part of God’s family forever. If you’re ready to commit your life to Jesus, then pray this prayer:

“Dear Jesus, you have promised that if I believe in you, everything I’ve ever done wrong will be forgiven, I will learn the purpose of my life, and you will accept me into your family forever and into your eternal home in heaven one day.

“I confess my sin, and I believe that you are God, my Savior. I receive you into my life as my Lord. Today, I’m turning every part of my life over to you. I want to follow you and do what you tell me to do.

“Jesus, I am grateful for your love and your sacrifice that makes it possible for me to join you in heaven. I know I don’t deserve it. And I thank you that I don’t have to earn or work for my salvation, because I know that is impossible. I want to use the rest of my life to serve you instead of serving myself. I humbly commit my life to you, and I ask you to save me and accept me into your family. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

Como Estar Confiado en Tiempos Inciertos

“ Ustedes también deben ser pacientes. Anímense, porque la venida del Señor está cerca ”. Santiago 5:8 (NTV)

Estamos viviendo en tiempos inciertos y extraños. No sabemos qué está pasando en el mundo. Vemos información contradictoria de cada fuente. No sabemos cuánto va a continuar esparciéndose este virus. No estamos seguros de cómo tomar decisiones sabias sin tener toda la información que necesitamos.

Cuando tantas cosas son inciertas, podemos seguir seguros de esta verdad: Dios está en control.

“Por tanto, hermanos, tengan paciencia hasta la venida del Señor. Miren cómo espera el agricultor a que la tierra dé su precioso fruto y con qué paciencia aguarda las temporadas de lluvia. Así también ustedes, manténganse firmes y aguarden con paciencia la venida del Señor, que ya se acerca. No se quejen unos de otros, hermanos, para que no sean juzgados. ¡El juez ya está a la puerta!” Santiago 5:7-9 (NVI).

¿Por qué Santiago nos recuerda varias veces en este pasaje que el Señor ya viene? Porque es la prueba definitiva de que Dios está en control.

La historia cuenta la historia de Dios. No es circular. No existe el círculo de la vida. La historia es lineal, y se está moviendo al momento culminante. Dios tiene un plan. Dios tiene un propósito. Y un día Jesús va a regresar. Todo está preparado. No sabemos cuándo va a regresar, pero la Biblia habla más sobre la segunda venida de Jesús que de su primera venida. Eso significa que debemos cambiar la manera como vivimos nuestra vida cada día. ¡Debemos vivir con una gran expectativa!

Aunque la situación puede parecer fuera de control y lo que estás pasando puede ser doloroso, nada está fuera del control de Dios. Sé paciente. El tiempo de Dios es perfecto. Él nunca llega tarde. Él está en control.

Santiago 5:8 dice: “Tengan también ustedes paciencia; afirmen su corazón, porque la venida del Señor está cerca”. Jesús va a regresar un día. Nada va a detener eso.

Conociendo que la historia está bajo el control de Dios y que Jesús ha prometido regresar, eso nos debería dar toda la confianza que necesitamos en tiempos inciertos. Cuando sientas que no puedes confiar en nada, cuenta con esto: Dios se encarga de todo. Y Jesús regresará pronto un día para corregir todo y hacerlo nuevo.

We Know How the Story Ends

“The Good News about God’s kingdom will be preached in all the world, to every nation. Then the end will come.”

Matthew 24:14 (NCV)

History’s conclusion is inevitable.

I believe this with all my heart. It’s a fait accompli. It’s done. It’s finished. There’s no doubt. I’ve read the final chapter.

God’s Word tells us how it’s going to end. One day God’s going to wrap it all up here on Earth, and he’s going to take his children home to heaven to be with him forever. The Bible says, “The Good News about God’s kingdom will be preached in all the world, to every nation. Then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14 NCV).

I’m going to tell you something really important. We are not trying to set up a kingdom here on earth. We are trying to populate the Kingdom of heaven. We want all our friends and everybody else to be with us in heaven. Our goal is to bring people into God’s Kingdom so they can be with him for eternity.

How do we bring glory to God? He gets glory when we love him with all our hearts. God gets glory when we love other people in the family of God. God gets glory when we love the people who are unlovable. God gets glory when we share the Good News with everybody. God gets glory when we trust him with problems in our lives that cannot be solved except through a miracle. And God gets glory when we know and trust that the end is inevitable and that he wins.

Does that sound like the way you want to live your life? If so, pray this simple prayer today:

“Dear Jesus Christ, I want to be a part of what you’re doing in the world. I believe you want to use me. I want to return to my first love: you. I want to be your hands and feet in the 21st century. Help me to believe and live by your convictions. In your name I pray. Amen.”

Busca Entender antes de Ser Entendido

“No se ocupen solo de sus propios intereses, sino también procuren interesarse en los demás. Tengan la misma actitud que tuvo Cristo Jesús”. Filipenses 2:4-5 (NTV)

Cuando estás en conflicto, la forma cristiana y amorosa de desactivar la tensión es buscar entender antes de buscar que te entiendan. Intenta averiguar lo que la otra persona está pensando y diciendo antes de que comiences a intentar convencerlo de tu punto de vista.

No puedes esperar ser entendido hasta que estés dispuesto a hacer lo mismo por los demás. La Biblia dice, “Precipitarse a responder antes de escuchar los hechos es a la vez necio y vergonzoso” Proverbios 18:13 (NTV).

A menudo estamos tan ocupados intentado hacer que las personas vean nuestro punto de vista que no nos detenemos a escuchar lo que ellos están diciendo.

Por eso es qué necesitas decir: “Tú primero”, y entonces, después de que hayan compartido, di, “Ahora, déjame ver si entendí. Estás diciendo (repites lo que entendiste de lo que te comunicaron). ¿Es correcto?” Eso les dará la oportunidad de corregir y no solo ser escuchados, sino también sentirse entendidos.

Buscar entender primero también te permite ver la perspectiva de la otra persona. Filipenses 2:4-5 dice “No se ocupen solo de sus propios intereses, sino también procuren interesarse en los demás. Tengan la misma actitud que tuvo Cristo Jesús” (NTV).

Estamos en el grosor de una pandemia llena con muchas discusiones acaloradas sobre la mejor manera de salir adelante. Todos tienen su perspectiva, pero parece que nadie está dispuesto a ver la perspectiva de los demás. Todo lo que podemos ver es nuestro lado de las cosas.

Si no estás dispuesto a buscar entender y reconocer otras perspectivas, no vas a ser capaz de ver el dolor de otras personas. No podrás ver su temor, su dolor o la injusticia que han enfrentado.

Así no es la manera de Jesucristo. Él siempre estaba viendo más allá de sí mismo hacia las necesidades de otros. Incluso en la cruz, Él estaba pensando en ti.

No es fácil pensar en otros antes que en ti mismo. Ciertamente no es natural. Tú eres, por naturaleza, una persona egoísta. ¡Yo también! Dedicado a mis propios dispositivos, siempre elijo ver por mí, antes de ver por otros.

Solo Jesús puede cambiar mi perspectiva —y la tuya. Solo Jesús puede hacer que estés más interesado en los intereses de alguien más que en los tuyos. Cuando tienes el carácter de Cristo, el deseo de entender antes de ser entendido se vuelve más natural. Solo entonces tú puedes trabajar a través del conflicto mientras piensas en otros antes que en ti.

Reflexiona sobre esto:

Trust God to Do Great Things

“Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’”

Matthew 19:26 (NIV)

Everything is possible with God.

“Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible’” (Matthew 19:26 NIV).

Why did Saddleback Church launch the PEACE Plan? What makes us think we could lead thousands of other churches to go after the five biggest problems on the planet? The answer is that we have a big God.

People say, “Who do you think you are?” Wrong question. The question is, “Who do we think God is?” My God can do anything.

Jesus said, “According to your faith let it be done to you” (Matthew 9:29 NIV).

God wants to use you. He wants to bless you. He wants to do amazing things in your life. He wants you to be a world changer. But he’s waiting for you to trust him.

Stop saying, “I can’t.” “I can’t make this marriage work.” “I can’t do what God wants me to do.” “I can’t love those who are different than me.” Those are lies! All things are possible with God.

Ephesians 3:20 says, “Now glory be to God, who by his mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of—infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes” (TLB).

That’s why, through these devotionals, I push you. It’s because I know you have enormous potential—far beyond what you ever imagined. God wants to use you, and according to your faith it will be done to you.

Do you know what the greatest opposition to your faith is? It’s not other people. It’s not critics. It’s not even the devil. It’s your own unbelief.

You have a choice. You can choose to believe God—or not. You can choose to trust God—or not. There are many things you don’t have control over. But you can choose to have faith in God. Do you want God to do big things in your life? Then start believing.
