What to Do When Your Hope Dies

“Abraham, when hope was dead within him, went on hoping in faith . . . He relied on the word of God.”

Romans 4:18 (PHILLIPS)

How do you know when hope has died in your life? You start using the word “never.” I’m never going to get married. I’m never going to graduate. I’m never going to get well. I’m never going to get out of debt. I’m never going to be able to let go of my past and forget all of that shame and heartache. I’m never going to be able to change. I’m never going to see this situation turn around. That’s when hope has died—when you have reached a dead end and don’t see a way out.

What do you do when your hope dies? Romans 4:18 says, “Abraham, when hope was dead within him, went on hoping in faith . . . He relied on the word of God” (PHILLIPS).

When you are at a dead end—when it’s hard to hold on to hope—you need the Bible. Read it. Study it. Memorize it. Think about it. Write it down on little notecards and take them wherever you go. 

The Bible is full of promises, and nothing else can encourage you like it can. When you rely on the Word and trust in its promises, it will revive you emotionally. You won’t panic because you’ll be reminded that, even though something is out of your control, it’s not out of God’s control.

A dead end is a test of your faith. The Bible says in Hebrews 11:17, “While God was testing him, Abraham still trusted in God and his promises, and so he offered up his son Isaac” (TLB). When God said he wanted Abraham to sacrifice his son, Abraham didn’t blink an eye. He didn’t panic—because he remembered what God could do. He relied on what God had promised him. 

Sometimes, like it did for Abraham, it looks like God wants you to give up your most precious dream. Can you offer that to him in faith, trusting in God’s deliverance?

Maybe you’re at a dead end now, and it seems there is no way out. Hear this: Things are never as bleak as they seem. If you see no way out, it’s because you’re looking from a human viewpoint, not God’s. 

Romans 4:20 says, “Abraham never doubted. He believed God, for his faith and trust grew ever stronger, and he praised God for this blessing even before it happened” (TLB).

A promise is only as good as the character of the person who makes the promise. The Bible says God cannot lie because he is complete truth. If he makes a promise to you, he’s going to fulfill it. It will happen exactly as he has said. When you’re at your dead end, trust in God’s truth.

Tres Cosas para Enfocarte y Experimentar Libertad

“Pongan la mira en las cosas del cielo, y no en las de la tierra”. Colosenses 3:2 (RVC)

La verdadera libertad viene cuando enfocas tu mente en la verdad de Dios. Pero ¿cómo enfocas tu mente en las cosas correctas para que puedas experimentar libertad? Aquí hay tres cosas que puedes hacer, que harán una gran diferencia en la dirección de tu mente.

Primero, piensa en Jesús. Hebreos 12:3 dice, “Por lo tanto, mediten en el ejemplo de Jesús, que sufrió tanta contradicción de parte de los pecadores; por eso, no se cansen ni se desanimen” (DHH). ¿Qué te da la fuerza para seguir adelante? Piensa en Jesús, mantén tu mente en quien la Biblia dice que es Él y el ejemplo que Él te está dando sobre cómo vivir una vida que complace a Dios.

Segundo, piensa en los demás. “Busquemos la manera de ayudarnos unos a otros a tener más amor y a hacer el bien” Hebreos 10:24 (DHH). La mayoría de las personas en el mundo piensan primero en sí mismos. Así que cualquiera que piense más en los demás que en sí mismo va a brillar. Cuando eliges pensar sobre lo que otros pueden necesitar y como los puedes ayudar, encontrarás difícil dejar que tus problemas te hundan.

Tercero, piensa en la eternidad. La Biblia dice en Colosenses 3:2, “Pongan la mira en las cosas del cielo, y no en las de la tierra” (RVC). Cualquier cosa que te preocupe hoy, posiblemente no va a importar en cinco años, mucho menos en la eternidad. Todo se pone en perspectiva cuando piensas en tu vida bajo la luz de la eternidad.

Cualquier situación que estés enfrentando hoy, haz un alto, y piensa sobre lo que estás pensando. Entonces elige enfocarte en Jesús, en otras personas y en tu hogar en la eternidad. Quitarás el enfoque en ti mismo, y vivirás con propósito. ¡Esto transformará tu vida!

When You’re at a Dead End, God Can Deliver You

“Abraham believed in the God who brings the dead back to life and who creates new things out of nothing.”

Romans 4:17 (NLT)

In this series, we’re learning how God takes us through the Six Phases of Faith—a dream, decision, delay, difficulty, dead end, and deliverance—over and over again throughout our lives to grow our faith and develop our character.

The fifth phase God uses to grow your faith happens when you hit a dead end and it seems like your dream has turned to dust. It may feel like the dream is over, but it’s not. You’ve just moved into the next phase God uses to grow your faith. 

During the dead-end phase, nothing makes sense. Things are out of your control, and you can’t do anything about it. In this phase you may hear—and experience—dead-end words like “cancer,” “divorce,” “bankruptcy,” “infertility,” or “unemployment.”

You’ll find yourself asking, “Why is this happening to me? God, did I miss your will? Was this dream just something I thought up myself and not from you?” When you start asking those questions, you’re at a dead end, and you need God’s deliverance. 

While you’re stuck and waiting for deliverance, you need to remember what God can do. The situation may be out of your control, but it’s not out of God’s control. When you face a dead end, don’t focus on what you can’t do. Focus instead on what God can do. 

Romans 4:17 says, “Abraham believed in the God who brings the dead back to life and who creates new things out of nothing” (NLT).

Here are two of the many things God can do that you can’t do: First, he can give life to the dead. Second, he can create something out of nothing. If God can give life to a dead man, he can give life to a dead career. He can bring life to your dead marriage. He can create something out of your dead dream. He can bring something new out of a financial dead end. 

Abraham believed in God. That wasn’t just positive thinking; it was faith. Positive thinking works fine in situations you can control. But positive thinking is not faith, and it’s not enough when you find yourself at a dead end. 

In situations that are out of your control, positive thinking is worthless. It doesn’t change the situation! When you face things that are out of your control, you need something more than a positive mental attitude. You need faith in God, because he can control what you can’t.

Jesus says in Luke 18:27, “What is impossible with man is possible with God” (NIV). God specializes in the impossible. He works miracles all the time—and he can work them in your life too! 

What dead end are you facing today? God is ready to turn your dead end into deliverance.

La Única Verdad que te Hará Libre

“y conocerán la verdad, y la verdad los hará libres”. Juan 8:32 (NTV)

Muchas cosas que son verdad no te harán libre. Puedes aprender a programar una computadora, pero eso no te hará libre. Puedes leer todos los libros de auto ayuda, pero eso tampoco te hará libre.

La única verdad que te hará libre es la verdad de la Palabra de Dios: “y conocerán la verdad, y la verdad los hará libres” Juan 8:32 (NTV). Muchas personas pueden mencionar este versículo, pero no todos conocen de lo que está hablando la Biblia o ni siquiera saben que viene de la Biblia.

Si conocer la Palabra de Dios es la única manera para ser libre, entonces tienes que hacer que leer y estudiar la Biblia sea una prioridad en tu vida. Tienes que alimentar tu mente con la verdad de la Palabra de Dios.

El antiguo rey israelita David, entendió que tan importante es la Palabra de Dios. Hubo un tiempo cuando él tenía tantos enemigos que fue realmente un fugitivo. Él estaba huyendo por su vida y escondiéndose en cuevas. Pero no importa lo que sucediera, él se alimentó con la verdad de Dios.

Salmo 119:95 es uno de los salmos que él escribió durante este tiempo, y dice: “Aunque los malvados se escondan por el camino para matarme, con calma, mantendré mi mente puesta en tus leyes” (NTV).

Cuando miras alrededor a las cosas en el mundo, es fácil desanimarse. Cuando miras los noticieros y escuchas la radio, te vas a desanimar. Te vas a sentir desesperado. Pero cuando llenas tu mente con la verdad de la Palabra de Dios, entonces vas a tener más esperanza y mejor perspectiva en tu vida —incluso cuando estés en una crisis y huyendo de tus enemigos.

“Oh, ¡cuánto amo tus enseñanzas! Pienso en ellas todo el día” Salmo 119:97 (NTV). Puede ser intimidante intentar pensar sobre la Palabra de Dios durante todo el día. ¡Eso es porque a nadie le pasa naturalmente! Puedes luchar con pensar en la Palabra de Dios incluso una vez al día, pero puedes comenzar por alguna parte.

Intenta comenzar tu día con la Palabra de Dios. Pasa diez minutos leyendo la Biblia en la mañana, y entonces puedes pensar sobre lo que leíste durante el día. Y el Espíritu Santo te ayudará a recordar lo que has leído cuando lo necesites en tiempos difíciles.

In Difficult Times, What Happens in You Is Most Important

“Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, ‘Unless these men stay with the ship, you cannot be saved.’”

Acts 27:31 (NIV)

When you experience problems, difficulties, or hurts in life, they can either make you better or bitter. You really have a choice. You can either grow up or give up. You can become who God wants you to be, or you can become hard-hearted. 

When you go through difficult times, what happens to you is not nearly as important as what happens in you. You’ll take your character with you into eternity—not your circumstances.

How you respond to life’s unfairness is up to you. That’s why you want to decide now what you will do.

Acts 27 teaches three responses to avoid in trials, and from them, we can learn how God wants us to respond instead:

1. Don’t drift; stay focused. “The ship was caught by the storm and could not head into the wind; so we gave way to it and were driven along” (Acts 27:15 NIV). The ship carrying Paul and other prisoners to Rome was in the middle of the Mediterranean and hadn’t seen the sun for 14 days. They couldn’t get any bearings, and they started to drift.

When some people face difficulty, they start drifting through life. They have no goal, purpose, ambition, or dream. Today we call this “coasting.” The problem with coasting is that you only coast when you’re headed downhill. Life is not a coast; life’s tough. Don’t lose your ambition or your dream when life gets hard. 

2. Don’t discard; hold on. “We took such a violent battering from the storm that the next day they began to throw the cargo overboard” (Acts 27:18 NIV). The men in charge needed to lighten the ship, so they threw the cargo overboard, followed by the tackle and the food. Because the storm was so overwhelming, they were discarding things they needed.

When you get in a storm and the stress becomes unbearable, you may start abandoning values and relationships you would normally hold onto in better times. You might say, “I’m giving up on my marriage” or “I’m giving up on my dream to go to college.”

But God says, “Stay with the ship!” God uses difficult situations to change people. It’s rarely God’s will for you to run from a difficult situation. God wants you to learn, grow, and develop—and he is there with you all the time.

3. Don’t despair; hope in God. “We finally gave up all hope of being saved” (Acts 27:20 NIV). After 14 days and after giving up their cargo, tackle, and food, the passengers finally gave up hope. But they’d forgotten one thing: Even in a storm, God is in control. He hasn’t left you. You may not feel him, but if you feel far from God, guess who moved? It wasn’t him!

God is with you in the storm, and he’ll help you through it. And on the other side of the storm, you’ll find that he’s grown your character and deepened your faith.

Talk It Over

In what part of your life are you just coasting right now? How can you start chasing a goal instead?
When did you run from a difficult situation? When did you stay in a difficult situation? How did your response in each situation shape your character?
Is there something in your life that's tempting you to despair? Spend some time in prayer, letting God know you trust that he's with you, even if you can't feel his presence.

What is your choice about Jesus?

God proved his love for you through his Son, Jesus Christ. The Bible says, “For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16 CSB).

Are you ready to trust God to fulfill his promise of eternal life? If so, start with this simple prayer:

“Dear God, I don’t want my sin to separate me from you any longer. You have promised that if I believe in Jesus, you’ll forgive me for everything I’ve ever done wrong, you’ll show me the purpose of my life, and you’ll accept me into your family and bring me to heaven one day to live with you for eternity.

“Jesus, I confess my sin, and I believe you are my Savior. I trust you when you say salvation comes by grace, through faith, and not by anything I do. I ask you to come into my life as my Lord. Today, I commit my life to you.

“I want to live the way you created me to live—at peace and rested—and to use the remainder of my life to serve you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

¿Te Estás Diciendo la Verdad?

“Los que están dominados por la naturaleza pecaminosa piensan en cosas pecaminosas, pero los que son controlados por el Espíritu Santo piensan en las cosas que agradan al Espíritu”. Romanos 8:5 (NTV)

¿Te has sentido como si fueras rehén de tus pensamientos? Tal vez no has podido sacar un pensamiento de tu mente. O a menudo te encuentras haciendo cosas que no quieres hacer. Conscientemente te atas a un comportamiento contraproducente. Sabes que algo no es bueno para ti, pero lo haces de todos modos.

Romanos 7:23 dice, “pero hay otro poder dentro de mí que está en guerra con mi mente. Ese poder me esclaviza al pecado que todavía está dentro de mí” (NTV).

Debido a tu naturaleza pecaminosa, piensas en ti mismo y en tus deseos, por encima de los deseos de Dios. Es una batalla en tu mente, y la estás perdiendo. Tu vieja naturaleza —quien eras antes de que Jesús cambiara tu vida— no es tu amiga. Es el origen de todos tus hábitos contraproducentes que tienden a derribarte.

¿Quieres romper esos hábitos y tener más control sobre la forma en la que piensas?

Entonces necesitas escuchar y entender esta verdad: No tienes que creer todo lo que piensas.

Tu mente te miente todo el tiempo. Solamente porque piensas que algo es verdad no lo hace verdad. Solamente porque sientes que algo es cierto no lo hace cierto. Tu mente y tus emociones a menudo te mienten. Parte del crecimiento espiritual —ser más como Jesús— es aprender a conocer la diferencia entre los pensamientos que son verdad y aquellos que no lo son.

Una de las disciplinas más importantes en las que puedes basar tu vida es retar tus propios pensamientos. Habla contigo mismo: “Sé lo que estoy pensando, pero ¿eso es realmente verdad?”.

No importa que tan lejos llegues en tu andar espiritual, tu edad, la naturaleza pecaminosa continuará intentando tomar el control de tus pensamientos. Tienes que aprender a cuestionar tus pensamientos, no solo una vez, ¡sino durante tu día y a través de tu vida!

Cuando comienzas a pensar que a nadie le agradas, pregúntate si eso es realmente verdad. Si crees que nunca vas a mejorar, pregúntate si eso es verdad. Cuando pienses que tu vida es inútil, pregúntate de qué te está tratando de convencer satanás. Entonces, recuerda lo que sabes a través de la Palabra de Dios, lo que es verdadero.

Every Storm Is a School, Every Trial a Teacher

“This small and temporary trouble we suffer will bring us a tremendous and eternal glory, much greater than the trouble.”

2 Corinthians 4:17 (GNT)

When we go through difficulties in life, the first thing we often try to do is blame somebody else. But it doesn’t matter where your problem came from—God still has a purpose for it in your life. 

Even when you do something foolish, God can use it. Even when other people hurt you intentionally, he can use it. Even when the Devil tries to mess things up, God can bring good out of it. 

God’s purpose is greater than your problems and your pain. He has a plan! You need to look past the temporary pain and look instead at the long-term benefit in your life. 

Romans 5:3-4 says, “We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that . . . they help us learn to be patient. And patience develops strength of character in us and helps us trust God more each time we use it until finally our hope and faith are strong and steady” (TLB).

What’s the purpose of your problems and difficulty? God wants you to learn something. Every storm is a school. Every trial is a teacher. Every experience is an education. Every difficulty is for your development.

Most of us are slow learners. If you don’t learn something the first time, God will bring it up again in your life. It will come back because God is more interested in your character than he is in your comfort. He is more interested in seeing you become more like Christ than he is in making things easy for you.

Maybe you are facing a major difficulty right now. It may be an illness, guilt, a financial problem, or strain in a relationship. Does God have a word for you while you’re going through your difficulty? Absolutely. God is essentially saying to you, “Don’t give up; grow up. Let me make you more like me through this painful situation.” 

Through your difficulty, let God fulfill his purpose in you—to transform you more and more into the person he created you to be. 

Trust this truth: “This small and temporary trouble we suffer will bring us a tremendous and eternal glory, much greater than the trouble” (2 Corinthians 4:17 GNT).

Cómo ver el Propósito en tu Dolor

“…Jesús soportó la cruz, sin importarle la vergüenza que esta representaba. Ahora está sentado en el lugar de honor, junto al trono de Dios”. Hebreos 12:2 (NTV)

Si eres un adulto muy maduro, probablemente has aprendido que puedes manejar más dolor de lo que pensabas. De hecho, probablemente tuviste que pasar por tiempos difíciles para que te dieras cuenta cuanto podrías manejar.

Los seres humanos logran manejar una enorme cantidad de dolor, si pueden ver el propósito y la recompensa una vez terminado el dolor. Eso es exactamente lo que Jesús hizo cuando fue a la cruz. Él sufrió un dolor insoportable, pero Él miró más allá del dolor, miró la recompensa en el cielo. Él tuvo una perspectiva eterna.

Jesús no solamente estaba mirando el aquí y el ahora. Si lo estuviera, su futuro se vería desolado, y Él se habría desesperado. Pero Jesús miró más allá del dolor a la recompensa en el cielo. Él valoró que la recompensa eterna era mucho más que cualquier alivio temporal en la tierra.

Cuando estás en dolor y solo miras el aquí y el ahora, puedes desanimarte y deprimirte. Algunas veces puedes sentir ganas de rendirte. La única forma en la que lo vas a lograr a través de los tiempos más difíciles en la vida, es mirar más allá del dolor, mirar la recompensa en el cielo.

Hebreos 12:2 dice, “…Jesús soportó la cruz, sin importarle la vergüenza que esta representaba. Ahora está sentado en el lugar de honor, junto al trono de Dios” (NTV).

Jesús soportó el dolor vergonzoso en la cruz porque Él sabía la alegría que tendría después. La más grande alegría para Jesús —y nosotros— es la esperanza de una eternidad en el cielo, donde estaremos en la presencia de Dios para siempre.

Cuando tienes la mente de Cristo, comienzas a pensar como Jesús piensa —sobre tu pasado, tu presente, tu futuro, Dios, la vida, la muerte, el pecado, la salvación, tus amigos y tu confianza. Te das cuenta de que hay más en la vida que solamente el aquí y el ahora, y eso te da la fuerza para soportar.

Reflexiona sobre esto

¿Qué te da más esperanza? ¿Qué te da el mayor confort?¿Cómo puedes recordarte de lo que Dios te ha prometido en el cielo para que puedas aguantar a través de tu dolor?¿Qué tipo de propósito pudo Dios tener en permitirte aguantar dolor?En esta temporada de incertidumbre, ¿Cómo cambia tu perspectiva el tener la mente de Cristo y la esperanza de la eternidad?

Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más? Si estás listo para cruzar esa línea y tomar la decisión de creer en Jesucristo y seguirlo; haz esta oración .

Three Ways to Follow God Through Difficulties

In this series, we’re learning how God takes us through the Six Phases of Faith—a dream, decision, delay, difficulty, dead end, and deliverance—over and over again throughout our lives to grow our faith and develop our character.

The fourth phase God uses to grow your faith is when you encounter difficulties on the journey toward your dream. These difficulties are tests, giving you a chance to follow God’s guidance.

In Acts 27, Paul set sail for Rome along with other prisoners on a journey with many difficulties. On one leg of the voyage, Paul warned the crew that if they continued to sail, they would be caught in a major storm and the results would be disastrous. The crew decided to sail anyway.

To avoid the mistakes the crew made—and faithfully follow God instead—here are three things to remember when you’re facing difficulties:

Follow God, not others’ opinions. On Paul’s journey, “the centurion, instead of listening to what Paul said, followed the advice of the pilot and of the owner of the ship” (Acts 27:11 NIV). Because the “expert” said it was okay, the centurion ignored a warning from God and agreed to head back out to sea. 

If God tells you to do one thing and all the experts in the world tell you to do something else, listen to what God says. His voice is the only one that counts. 

Follow God, not the majority. On Paul’s ship, “the majority decided that [they] should sail on” (Acts 27:12 NIV). The harbor where Paul’s ship had taken refuge was exposed and not a good choice for spending the winter, and so the majority on board wanted to sail on. But the majority is often wrong! 

Peer pressure often keeps people from doing what God wants them to do. Remember that God is a majority of one.

Follow God, not your circumstances. “When a gentle south wind began to blow, they saw their opportunity; so they weighed anchor and sailed . . . Before very long, a wind of hurricane force . . . swept down from the island” (Acts 27:13-14 NIV). Paul warned the others that they were heading into a storm, but they sailed anyway. 

Just because you’re given an opportunity, it doesn’t mean you have to take it. You shouldn’t accept every job you’re offered or date everybody who asks you out. Satan can arrange circumstances too! You need to ask God for his direction.

No matter what difficult circumstances you face in life, you can remain faithful by listening to what God says, remembering his voice is the only one that counts, and following his guidance.

Cómo Rendirte a la Voluntad de Dios cuando Estás Sufriendo

“Abba, Padre, todo es posible para ti. No me hagas beber este trago amargo, pero no sea lo que yo quiero, sino lo que quieres tú”. Marcos 14:36 (NVI)

Tener la mente de Cristo significa que quieres hacer la voluntad de Dios, incluso cuando duele, incluso cuando es difícil, incluso cuando parece imposible. Jesús nos dio el máximo ejemplo de esto la noche antes de ir a la cruz.

En el jardín del Getsemaní, Jesús estaba en agonía sabiendo el dolor que iba a enfrentar el día siguiente —no solo el dolor físico sino el dolor emocional y espiritual de estar separado de su Padre mientras el llevaba la vergüenza y peso de nuestro pecado.

Incluso entonces, Jesús oró, “Abba, Padre, todo es posible para ti. No me hagas beber este trago amargo, pero no sea lo que yo quiero, sino lo que quieres tú” Marcos 14:36 (NVI). En Getsemaní, Jesús dijo que Él quería hacer la voluntad de Dios, no la suya, incluso si era dolorosa.

Cuando estás en dolor, haz la oración del jardín del Getsemaní. Hay tres partes en ella. La primera parte es fe. Jesús creyó que Dios tenía el poder de cambiar su situación. También puedes hacer esta oración. Cualquier tipo de situación que estés pasando justo ahora, puedes comenzar orando con fe, “Dios, Yo sé que tienes el poder de cambiar esto”.

Entonces pídele a Dios su ayuda. Es apropiado decir, “Dios, te pido que me ayudes. Estoy en mucho dolor justo ahora, y necesito alivio. Te pido un milagro. Yo sé que tienes el poder de cambiar mi situación, y te pido que lo hagas”.

La tercera parte de la oración del Getsemaní es rendirse, y es la clave para aprender a tener la mente de Cristo. Ora como lo hizo Jesús: “Señor, aunque te estoy pidiendo que quites de mí este dolor, me rindo a ti, por encima de cualquier otra cosa, incluso más que el alivio, busco tu voluntad no la mía”.

¿Estás listo para decir eso a Dios en tu hora de mayor necesidad? Cuando lo haces, muestras madurez espiritual y plena confianza que Dios continuará proveyendo para ti y usando cada problema para bien.
