Shuttered Affection by Rene Folsom
From the author of the Roommate Romance series comes a breathtaking tale of a girl trying to escape her past and focus on her future, all while coping with lust at first sight when she least expects it. To be read as the first novel in the Cornerstone series, I give you the cover of Shuttered Affections…
Synopsis
After escaping to a college town, Juliana Petersen was determined to put her troubled past behind her and make the most of life. She was satisfied with her current situation, or so she thought. It wasn’t until the day her new photography professor stole her parking spot that she realized there was such thing as lust at first sight. Now, she must struggle with the decision to break the rules and fall in love, or step back and let the chance of a lifetime pass her by—all while her past relationships come back to haunt her.
How many men will it take to break Julia’s hold on reality?
Excerpt
In an attempt to lighten the mood, I changed the subject. Uncrossing my legs, I planted my feet slightly apart in front of me and propped my elbows on my knees.
“I also brought some fruit… grapes and strawberries.” I smiled big at my attempt to be sweet.
“Ahh. Actually, grapes would be great, but I’m allergic to strawberries,” he said with a bashful look on his face.
“Oh, what a shame,” I said with a hint of seduction in my voice. “Because they’re very plump and juicy. I just love strawberries.”
“Oh, you do, do you?” he teased.
I nodded, biting my lip out of nervousness with what I was about to do.
Then, I did the most daring thing I could think of.
I grabbed one of the strawberries and slowly brought it to my mouth. I parted my lips and thrust my tongue slightly out to meet with the delicious red morsel. I bit down while sucking the juices slowly. My eyes fluttered and rolled shut as I enjoyed the delicious flavors bursting onto my taste buds. Seductively, I flicked the leftover green cap into the grass beside us, then began licking and sucking on the two fingers that were covered with the sticky juice.
After enjoying each slow chew, I opened my eyes to gaze upon a man with power and hunger in his eyes. Hunger for me.
The next thing I knew, Aiden was on his hands and knees, methodically making his way towards me.
Out of sheer instinct, I backed away while keeping my legs slightly apart and propping myself back on my arms. He continued his prowl until he was kneeling between my knees with both his hands braced beside me.
He edged closer to me, his lips hovering precariously close to mine. A sudden gasp of breath was all I could manage before our lips met.
His right hand steadied my upper back while he held himself up with his left, hovering over me. His chest pressed hot and hard against mine. Our tongues met and tangled together. I struggled for air but couldn’t pull away. He consumed me.

About the Author
Rene Folsom, author of paranormal romance and erotica, lives in Florida with her husband and three kids. She has officially diagnosed herself with creative ADD and, if it weren’t for her day job as a web programmer, she would have a million and one writing projects going at once. In addition to web design, she is also a graphic artist who loves to create custom book cover designs for indie authors. She is definitely an artist at heart and would love nothing more than to be elbow deep in clay during her waking hours.
Rene believes that all fiction is based on some form of reality—otherwise we would never have the inspiration or knowledge to dream up the realistic situations we portray with our words. She is proud to say that her personal experiences have been inspirational, though perhaps not always identical to that of her fictional characters. Where reality and fantasy diverge, however, must remain her little secret…

5 Stars
The summer after graduation, Charley has to make some decisions – does she stick with her original decision to go to college close to home or is this her chance to get away from the small town farm life and figure out who she is? She’s scared her parents will hate her if she doesn’t go where they expect her to, but her mom only wants her daughter to be happy. So at the last minute, Charley and her mom visit some schools, and of course options are limited. A couple weeks later, Charley is packing up to head to Southern College!
Her first day at Southern, Charley makes some new friends that she knows will play a huge role in her college experience. She also meets Joe – the HOT blonde surfer boy with the bluest eyes you’ve ever seen. She feels an attraction to him immediately but she’s learned the hard way that the hot, popular, bad boy isn’t the kind of guy she needs. And she also feels guilty because she knows Cash is at home waiting for her.
Cash has lived on the farm next door to Charley’s for as long as she can remember and he’s just a good ol’ sexy country boy. He’s made sure Charley knows he’s there for her whenever she’s ready, but she feels she needs to live a little while at school. Will she open herself up to Joe and give him a chance, leave her past behind? Or will she stick with Cash because he’s the only one who truly knows her and has always been there for her, especially through the hardest time in her life? Can she ever really get away from the past or will it continue to haunt her?
I loved this book so much and Charley should be my best friend! She’s your genuine home-grown country girl – she loves fishing, hunting, working on her family’s farm, and she’s not afraid to get dirty, but she also loves to dress up and go have some fun. She’s real and doesn’t change for anybody. I’m from the country myself and I can totally relate to the characters in this book, as well as Hank’s Tavern and Turtle’s Pool Hall, and I love me some Choice Cherry Gold! No Turning Back is an awesome debut novel from the even more awesome Casey Peeler and I’m looking forward to seeing her grow as an author. And I need to know what happens with Charley, like NOW…Finding Charley to be released in the Spring of 2014 but I can’t wait that long!

Stop running! Running From Forever is LIVE!
Synopsis:
Recent college graduate, Kayla Reynolds was ready to leave the university, sorority life behind. Leaving her boyfriend of over three years, she packed her bags and moved four hours south to the big city…New York City. Bright lights, streets that never sleep, and a business lifestyle that she yearned to have were all at her fingertips.
Kayla Reynolds was chasing her dream.
Determined and eager to make it in the corporate world, Kayla changed everything- her image, lifestyle, and outlook on life, putting her career first and her personal life second. That was until her first day, the first time she got a glimpse of Miles Blackwell. Corporate CEO and part owner of ETV, and not to mention, incredibly handsome, Miles Blackwell took Kayla by surprise, stealing her heart as he did.
But nothing had ever come that easy for Kayla. Life had always seemed to have a personal vendetta against her, stepping in when everything seemed too good to be true, reminding herself of whom she really was. It wasn’t until she met Merrick Drake that she realized when to stop; when running was no longer an option. For the first time in her life she had someone she could relate to; someone who wouldn’t judge- who saw the person she was inside. She and Merrick connected…on more levels than one.
When life was too much to handle, they ran.
But there was only one person that could make Kayla stop for good. Only one man that made her want to stay.
Would Kayla finally stop running or would it all be too much to handle?

Excerpt:
She let out an exasperated breath. “No. No, I gotta figure this out.” She turned to face me, legs crossed, intertwined. “I don’t know what to do, Merrick.”
I felt it in my chest. She was lost, pleading for help. I didn’t know if I was the best person to help her. I’d lived just as fucked up a life myself. From the age I could run, I did, staying at friend’s houses almost every day of the week, stopping home quick after school just to make sure my mom hadn’t overdosed and was dead on the floor. I did this almost my whole life…up until I ran here.
“I can’t really help you, babe, if I don’t know what happened,” I told her as sympathetically as I could, looking into her sad eyes. Even if I wasn’t the most qualified person to give advice, I wanted to help, but I also needed to know what happened first.
Kayla rubbed her face with her hands, keeping them over her eyes for a minute longer. She was thinking; questioning if she was ready to spill. I didn’t want to force her to do it, so I sat there quietly. I wish I could just sweep her up and run far, far away; take her away from all the bad in her life permanently, but that would mean I had to run again, and I was done running. I couldn’t do it anymore.
“I loved him.” Her voice was a whisper. She removed her hands from her face but only to look down to her crisscrossed feet. She couldn’t look at me while she told me, and I was okay with that. “I let my guard down when I knew I shouldn’t have, but I couldn’t help it.”
About the Author:
Some may consider me a jack of all trades, but I consider myself well rounded. I’ve waitressed, styled hair, answered phones and, most recently, worked full time as mom to my two beautiful little boys. Then there was this book… Everyone and their brother started talking about this book series titled Fifty Shades of Grey by EL James. I didn’t really pay attention to the craze at first, since I wasn’t a big reader- okay, I didn’t read at all. But curiosity got the best of me, so I downloaded it to my kindle. I was immediately hooked. I read the whole series in three days. Yes, three books in three days. I kept finding all these great books that I HAD to read (just ask my credit card!). Then I started hearing voices. Voices that turned into stories; stories that were begging to get out of my head. I started writing them down on scraps of paper. Then I transferred them to my computer. Before I knew it, Planning on Forever was born. The voices in my head are still talking, so I’m still writing.

4 Stars
Vanessa Smith has had bad luck with men. Thankfully her 4-year-marriage to Shane, the verbally abusive a-hole cheater, is almost over…well, it’s been over for quite some time, but at least now the divorce is almost finalized. She decides she doesn’t need a man in her life, besides, who would want her? She looks plain, she’s boring, and she’s a worthless wife, at least that’s what she’s been told for the last 4 years.
Jackson Berrios is new in town, he is the new star player for the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team, and he is H-O-T! He has a reputation of being a ladies man, but his life is changed the day he literally runs into Vanessa. He is immediately taken in by how breathtakingly beautiful she is and convinces her to let him take her to lunch to make up for knocking her down. At first Vanessa doesn’t recognize Jackson, but after seeing him on TV during their lunch, she is surprised. How can someone as beautiful and famous as him be interested in plain ol’ her? Surely he’s just being friendly.
Can Vanessa let her guard down and trust Jackson? Can Jackson convince Vanessa that she really is beautiful and that he is not the person the gossip magazines make him out to be? Or can one misunderstanding ruin everything?
Guarded is short and sweet, exactly what you expect from a novella, but it is jam packed with feels! I felt like some situations were sort of rushed through, but despite being a novella, the characters were well-developed and you can’t help but fall in love with them. I would love to see more of Vanessa and Jackson and where their relationship takes them.

Excerpt:
“You are the first woman I’ve ever made love to.”
His confession hit me hard.
“What do you mean?” I couldn’t believe we were discussing this in the middle of sex, but I wasn’t about to stop him from sharing something so intimate about himself.
He crawled up and laid next to me, turning me on my side so that we faced each other. He swept my hair behind my ears and calmed his breathing, “I have always been the Dom, Jen, that’s what I do best. I inflict pain and make women beg for me. All my past relationships, if you can even call them that, have been Dom and sub. I’d never given up my control for anyone, and I never planned to until you came along.
“You changed something inside of me. I’m not sure I’m ready to give up all my control, and I may never be ready, but you make me feel like it’s okay to make love. It’s okay to express how fucking in love with you I am. I want to be raw with you. I want our relationship to be happy and exciting. If I ever lost you, I would go crazy. Literally, bat shit crazy.”
We both chuckled.
“You are the light of my life. I know sometimes I may be unreasonable, but be patient with me. I promise I won’t let you down.”

Casey’s Review
I honestly just finished Before the Storm, and couldn’t wait to write my review. Currently I’m an emotional wreck, crying like a baby, and at a complete understanding of Haven from the Storm. This book is by far the most emotional book I have read in a while. This book made me feel the book from beginning to end, but especially the end.
This is book #2, but actually is more like book #1. Before the Storm is the story of Easton, Lilly’s brother. Easton has always been overprotective, and at times to a fault. He doesn’t want to end up like his father- controlling, angry, and abusive. He does everything in his power to change that and look out for his sister. I will say it is almost a hindrance for both Lilly and Easton, but Easton does what he does because he cares for Lilly above anyone else… except maybe Taylor
Before the Storm is written in the past and present. This allows you to know what happen that summer so many years ago when Taylor came to Kolby to visit her Aunt to escape her life from her parents and sick sister. She is finally able to live. Taylor feels that she is invisible to her parents. She decides to allow Lilly and Easton to get close to her; she begins to live. Her summer isn’t full of roses. Instead she has to deal with a girl named Bailey who is nothing more than a mean girl. I can’t comprehend Bailey’s reasoning for wanting to be mean to Taylor. I felt that her life must be pretty miserable for her to have to take it out on Taylor. My only other thought is that she wants Easton. I mean dang, she was just taking out the trash, and from that point on she made her life hell.
When the book is in the present, Taylor is back in town. Easton notices her, but can’t identify this girl across the gym. All he knows is that he is drawn to her. Lilly is the one makes the connection from the moment she sees her. Within this book, you see Easton trying to reconnect with Taylor, Easton trying to keep Dean away from Lilly, and how one natural disaster impacts the lives of the characters in Haven from the Storm.
Before the Storm is a book that will have you with all of your emotions out on the table. You want Easton ad Taylor to be together, but will that happen? You see the impact that Grandma Violet makes on Dean, Easton, Taylor, and Lilly. Your heart will hurt for Easton and Lilly’s home life. I just wanted to take them both in my arms and protect them from their father. When the book ends, you now understand the impact of that awful day when a tornado took lives, but lives end for many other reasons.
Before the Storm is a phenomenal story of how lives are impacted by child abuse, love of friends, natural disasters, overcoming your fears, finding your one true love, and living life to the fullest. Personally, I know want to pic up Haven from the Storm and read it again. I now know the full emotions of Lilly and Dean. The story behind their story, and why a red hawk is so important!

Easton
Present…
I finally got away from my sister’s watchful eye. I didn’t have anywhere I needed to be today and even more importantly there wasn’t anywhere I wanted to be. I wanted a break, a timeout from life. Everything was spinning out of control because they were all losing their minds…or I was losing my mind, I wasn’t exactly sure.
I heard footsteps approaching in the dry sand of Sunflower beach.
“What in the hell are you doing here?” I yelled at Dean.
“Well I assume the same thing you’re doing here – trying to get away from you and everyone else.”
I didn’t respond I just glared at him.
“Lily’s upset.” He said like I didn’t know my own sister was unhappy and that we were the cause.
“I know! What did you say to her?” I demanded.
“I told her what you wanted me to, I told her we were done and we could never be.” He took a deep breath and closed his eyes. “Isn’t that what you wanted?”
“No, that’s not what I wanted. I wanted you to stay away from her in the first place. Stay away from her until you grow up enough to deserve her.” I stood from my place on the rock and moved toward him. “Why would you think you could be with Lily when you were just messing with that red head? Are you trying to hurt her?”
“I didn’t do anything with Mindi. Not that I expect you to believe me, but it’s the truth. You’re determined to turn me into the bad guy and I think you’re doing a good job at it.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” I snapped.
“The harder you push the more you hurt her, not me.”

Lightning flashed brightly, and Sami noticed for the first time that the curtains were pulled back and the balcony door open. The distant thunder had moved in closer as the second round of storms rapidly approached. A sudden breeze carried in the fresh scent of rain, blowing the white curtains inward so they billowed like ghostly arms that reached out to touch her.
“It’s coming.”
“What is?”
“The rain.” He kissed her softly while the Beatles were replaced with something less familiar to her. Just a clean and simple guitar arrangement, something almost resembling folk music with a male vocalist whose mellow voice was warmly pastoral.
“What is this song?”
“Time Has Told Me.”
“I’ve never heard it before. It’s beautiful.”
“You like?” He continued to move dreamily with the music, his hands resting lightly against the small of her back. She allowed her own hands to roam freely over his smooth, solid chest, feeling his steady heartbeat through her fingertips. And she wanted that heart to belong only to her. He began to hum softly, and then to sing along with the lyrics in a beautiful voice that was a perfect replica of the one coming from the stereo’s surround sound.
She looked up at him in amazement. “Ash! That’s not you, is it?”
“Of course not. It’s Nick Drake. I’m just imitating him.”
“That’s incredible…you sound just like him!”
His lips curved slightly. “You might say I have a rare talent for impressions.”
“Your voices are identical. I didn’t know you could sing like that…you should have gone into the music industry.”
“Like Rick Radcliffe?” He raised a cynical eyebrow.
Was he kidding? There could never be even the remotest of comparisons. “Rick has nothing on you.”
“You’re right. He doesn’t.” The hands at her back pulled her more firmly against him. His lips grazed her ear. “No one does. So are you ready, Samara?”
“Ready for what?”
“To open your eyes. To see the truth.”
Maybe she was and maybe she wasn’t…but her need to know all was a ravenous hunger aching to be fed. “Yes. I’m ready.”
“‘Secrecy involves a tension which, at the moment of revelation, finds its release.’”
“Are you quoting philosophers now?”
“Oh, I’m quite the philosopher.” Releasing her, he walked out onto the balcony as the lightning lit up the sky brilliantly. A deafening crash of thunder followed on its heels.
“Come and look.”
Trying to ignore the concern that they both might be struck by lightning, she sidled up beside him. “What are we looking at?”
“The beach. It’s completely deserted.”
Well, that was no surprise. One would have to be crazy to be out there in weather like this. Another flash lit up the sky and she could clearly see the wall of heavy rain making its way toward them.
“There’s no one around to see what I’m about to do.”
About the author:
A resident of sunny Florida, Allie Gail is the author of Unconventional Scars, Winter’s Touch: Immortal Touch Book One and Fire and Ash: Immortal Touch Book Two. Allie’s had an obsession with reading ever since the day she was issued her first Sally, Dick and Jane reader. (Never mind how long ago that was!) When she isn’t busy obsessing over the lexicon of her novels, she can usually be found with her nose in a book, a cat on her lap and music impairing her hearing from headphones turned up way too high. Or sometimes roaming about Azeroth as a night elf rogue. Yep, that’s right.
And yes, on occasion…at the beach
