Ingrid Seymour on becoming a writer...
[caption id="attachment_748" align="alignleft" width="200" caption="Keeper"]
[/caption]As you may know, the first installment of Keeper came out in February 2014 and the next three volumes will release one each month, leading to the omnibus edition in July of the same year. And guys, you have no idea how this sounds to me. It’s music to my ears! I practically hear little cherubs playing harps and singing in angelic voices. That’s how thrilled I am. It all begins seven years ago (that’s when I decided to become a writer.) In 2007, I started crafting my first novel, equipped with one awesome idea, absolutely no writing skills and a ten thousand pounds of naivety. Two years later—yep two, I know, even I cringe—I finished, and my awesome idea became a young adult fantasy novel, one that needed about two more years of work! O.o Now, don’t panic, that book IS NOT Keeper. That’s another book that shall not be mentioned *pulls out a garlic necklace on said book* And oh, boy! Did that book make me realize I had a lot to learn! Wow, just wow! Still, undeterred and more excited about writing than ever, I began working on another book, also an awesome idea . . . I mean teens who metamorph . . . how cool is that?! (Yep, I’m finally talking about Keeper.) With my fingers very well acquainted with the keyboard by that point, Keeper didn’t take as long to write. Incredibly, I cut my time in half and it took me only one insignificant year of work (notice the sarcasm?) But, as with any book, the journey had just began, because there’s always . . . revision time. Yay! Several rounds of those later, I thought I had a pretty good story and was ready desperate for some feedback. Yeah, authors can be pretty needy like that. Reviews, give me more reviews! *clears throat* Uh, what was I saying? Oh, yeah, feedback. Since I needed someone to tell me I should quit writing and find another hobby, I thought what better place to take my young adult novel than to a place where young adult readers congregated. So that's just what I did; I took Keeper to inkpop.com. Inkpop doesn’t exist anymore (it was absorbed byfigment.com) but this was a site created by HarperCollins to find talent and let writerly teens hang out, a site a lot like authonomy.com. Every month readers voted for their favorite books and every month the top five were read by an honest-to-God HarperCollins editor. What do you think happened to Keeper over at Inkpop? Something I still can’t believe. Within 3 months, the YA audiences there voted KEEPER not only to the top five, but to #1 where it stayed for the entire month!! Ahhhhh! How crazy is that? I was floored. This happened in 2010, since I’ve written 6 more books and have learned tons more about the craft. Since I’ve gotten an agent and I’m in the process of signing a book contract. Incredible! It took Keeper four years to finally be published, not because the book wasn’t ready, but because I was too busy writing other books, ‘cause that’s what I love to do most . . . WRITE. Then last year I finally said, “enough is enough, some of these babies have to go out into the world.”
So I did it, and now I give you my second baby, the one that came out looking very pretty—not the first one with the paper bag over its head—I give you: http://amzn.to/1g8ZKUp">KEEPER!

What to remember when promoting your book...
Last week my guest told you how to hire an editor. This week learn how to utilize reviews, bloggers, and promotion services to promote your book. And don't forget to enter the giveaway found after this post!
Hey everyone! My name is Ly, and I am a book blogger over at HEA Bookshelf. Through my blog, I provide a number of services for authors besides reviewing and promoting books for fun. Today, I will discuss a few things I believe authors should keep in mind when publishing a book.
1. Developing a relationship with bloggers:
A working relationship is very important, in my opinion. Instead of sending out an informal request right off the bat, take a moment to at least chat with the blogger/reviewer first. Get to “know” whom you’re sending out a request to. It’s a friendlier approach and a way to start building a contact list. Also, avoid re-sending the same message multiple times. It may take us a moment to reply, but that doesn’t mean we did not see it. If you are messaging different book pages on Facebook, try to at least personalize the messages. We know when we are all getting the same exact request, especiallywhen it is sent more than once to the same blogger. For instance, I have a profile and a page on Facebook. I use my profile to manage the page. Well, I’ve gotten the same, identical request on both. This only tells me that they didn’t even bother to notice whom they were messaging. I get that we are all busy, but still, show that you care and that it isn’t ‘just another message’ being sent.
It is very important to also remember our manners. Be polite. Just as you don’t like someone sending you a message ‘demanding’ you to share something or read a book, we bloggers, don’t like it either. It leaves a bad and unprofessional taste.
On this point, I want to mention quickly the Street Teams. They can help an author, but just as well cause damage. A lot of bloggers strongly dislike when people post things on their “walls” without their consent or approval, so I would suggest you advise team against doing that. Also, instead of having them message bloggers, please consider doing that yourself. This goes hand-in-hand with what I mentioned above.
Finally, some bloggers even prefer to be emailed. Politely ask if you could send them an email with your information and go from there. Establish an author-blogger 2. Reviews:Reviews are super important, even negative ones when written respectfully. Not every book is for everyone. Please keep that in mind. Just because a reader did not like your book, doesn’t mean it isn’t any good or that you aren’t a talented writer. Simply, the book wasn’t for him/her.
Learn from the constructive criticism. Don’t automatically hate the blogger for being honest. Also, if you get a negative review and it is disrespectful, do not go and start World War III with that blogger. I highly recommend that you do not engage in any type of argument. It hurts, I know, but trust me. While people may be reading ‘bad things’ about your book, if the review is hurtful and mean, people will be talking about how unprofessional that blogger truly is. In turn, they lose credibility, not you or your book. But if you do choose to go after that blogger, then you may end up having other bloggers decline your requests in fear that if theydon’t like the book (even if they are truly professional about it), you may go after them.
Positive reviews. BLAST THEM. Promote them on your different social media accounts. Quote them to your fans and readers! Don’t rely on just bloggers to get the word out there. Which takes me to my next point….
3. Promotion:Promotion is key. You need to market yourself in this industry. Brand yourself and your books. Make it so that when people see an image or a cover, a book or series title, they automatically think of you. Link yourself to your books.
If you have an upcoming release date, BLAST it everywhere. Make readers aware. I recommend you make promotional graphics where three things are visible: release date, book title, and your name.
I think pre-sale promotion is important. It creates hype. Post teasers, quotes, graphics, introduce your characters, essentially, get your book out there before you hit ‘publish’. Let readers know it’s coming! Interact with your fans and readers, and upon the release go all out. Consider Release Day Blitz tours, make more teasers and promotional pictures, make your purchase link accessible to readers...in fact, BLAST that buy link. ARCs (Advance Reading Copy) work too....sometimes. You have to know who to target. Great reviews pre-release can be quoted and used to spike the curiosity in readers. However, be careful who you give ARCs to. You want to avoid getting a negative review before release.
Street Teams: a group of fans where they can share and promote you and your book(s). I mentioned this briefly in my first point, but I will elaborate more here. Be careful who you add. Establish rules to follow. Keep in mind that they should not spam bloggers or other authors while promoting you. Also, if they are representing you, make sure they do so professionally. I suggest that if a member of your street team is rude to a blogger while mentioning you or your books, that you either explain that this is not acceptable or simply, remove that person from your group. Have them post teasers of your books on their walls, have them share things with their friends. Do not have them randomly post about your books on the blog’s wall, unless they have the blogger’s consent. When a blog page writes a post asking about authors or books (for example “What book are you most excited to read?”) have your team members comment about your book. That is okay. You can also have them share your sales or new releases. Really, Street Teams are good when used properly.
4. Book Tours:I believe that if done properly and professionally, Blog Tours, Blitz Tours, Release Day Tours, ETC, can be an effective marketing strategy. They can get you a lot of exposure, but again, IF done properly. Do some research before hiring a blogger to organize any of these for you. Ask around. Get testimonials if needed. Follow on-going tours and see if that is something you would like to consider. Essentially, hire someone that knows what they are doing and doesn’t over-charge for their services.
These points are all my opinion based on different experiences I’ve had when working with authors. If you are interested in chatting with me, feel free to email me to: heabookshelf@gmail.com.

How To Hire An Editor
Last week I shared my personal experiences about becoming a self published author. Now I'm going to share the advice of some of the people who have helped me...
Hello! My name is Mickey Reed, and I'm a freelance editor for independent and self-published authors. I provide many different editing services tailored to the needs of writers. Today I will be talking about six important factors authors should look for when hiring an editor.
1. Someone who uses correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
You will most likely be communicating with your editor via email and social media. Perhaps you'll visit editors' websites to compare prices and services. Use those platforms to decide whether or not the potential editor is trained and knows English grammar, spelling, and punctuation rules. You may not know all of them yourself, but comma usage, missing/extra words, and homophone mix-ups (your vs. you’re, etc.) are key signals that the editor may not be able to spot every type of error in your manuscript. If you're looking for a content editor, this may not matter as much.
2. Someone who is pleasant and present.
You will be working very closely with your editor and trusting him or her with your manuscript. Make sure you find someone with whom you can easily communicate. It will make editing a breeze if you have an editor who can return emails or phone calls in a timely manner as well. You'll be less stressed about the whole process if you get along with your editor, so if you don't feel right about working with someone, don't do it. You want a solid team behind your book. Don't feel like you need to settle.
3. Someone with referrals or testimonials.
Feel free to check into testimonials or referrals. These usually mean that the editor has experience in the field, but chatting with an author who has used that editor may help ease your mind or move you in the right direction. Testimonials are usually on the editor's website, and authors who love their editors generally aren't shy about sharing information. Ask around and get recommendations. Or if you’ve read a self-published book with great editing, check who the editor was. Sometimes, an editor is just starting out and won't have these things. Check the other two points above in that case.
4. Someone who works well with deadlines.
As an author, you'll probably have release dates you'll want to hit. Your editor should be willing to work with you to meet your goals. In turn, you should be realistic with those goals. Editing requires time, so make sure you give your editor enough to do his or her job. But if you're married to your release date and there is a reasonable amount of time to get the job done, your editor should respect that. This is where communication (see #2 above) comes in very handy.
5. Someone who charges a reasonable rate.
There is an industry standard out there for what freelance editors can charge (http://www.the-efa.org/res/rates.php). If someone is charging more than that, you can move on or decide if it's worth the extra money. If someone is charging less, he or she likely either just started the business or is having a promotional period. This isn't always a 'you get what you pay for' kind of deal. So this is where #3 (referrals) will be of use.
6. Someone who will provide a sample.
An editor should be willing to edit a sample of your own work for you. Some editors may charge for this, but some do not. In either case, it’s usually helpful to see what someone will do with 2000 words or so of your actual work before you make a decision. It shows the editor what they’ll be working with, and then sample will help you determine if you’ll make a good author/editor team.
These are just my suggestions. You may find a gem of an editor who has no experience yet and doesn't reply to your emails for three days. If you are comfortable with that and feel good about it, go for it. These aren't hard and fast rules, but I've heard horror stories and cleaned up nightmares that might have been avoidable. I always want what's best for authors out there, and handing your manuscript over to the wrong person is not in your best interest.
If you're interested in my editing services, please check out my website (www.mickeyreedediting.com) or email me (imabookshark@yahoo.com).

What I've learned about being an Indie writer
A little over a year ago I finished my first book, Fighting Destiny (Central Coven 1). I didn't expect to become an overnight success, but I wasn't prepared for how difficult self-promotion would be. I wrote a second book Self Destruct (Destroy 1), but I've only increased my fan base a little.
I've gotten some great reviews, and some not so great reviews, but overall I was pleased with the response. But still, not many people have discovered my work.
That was when I started this blog. Soon after I created an author FaceBook page, and discovered Twitter. (You can find me @centralcoven)
I thought that I was taking all of the right steps to promote my work, but I was still relying on people finding me. I wrote a book about magic, but I shouldn't have expected people to magically find it.
That's when I learned one of the best things about being an Indie author: other authors are amazing. It is the best group of people, and they willing give you advice.
Now I will share the steps I have learned to better promote a book (and plan to use on Destroy Me later this spring):
Write a good book Edit, edit and then edit again.Pay for a good book cover, because let's face it we all judge books by their cover.Make friends with bloggers/reviewers and pay them to host a reveal/release/and blog tour.Giveaway free stuff: books, t-shirts, gift cards, whatever makes sense for your book.Give advance copies to get reviews. Reviews sell books. Write more books.repeatThat is what I've learned so far. I wish I knew steps 4-6 before I started, but writing, like life is a journey. Hopefully we get better at both over time. And like life when something doesn't work right, edit and try again!

Excerpts
Aiden's POV
We both sit quietly for what seems like forever, just watching the girls dance and laugh. “I still can’t believe she’s going to be my wife,” Liam says out of the blue. I laugh. “Yeah, I never thought I would see the day that Liam MacCoy settled down,” I chide him. “Just wait, dude, when you find it, you’ll understand.” I don’t say anything to that, because well…I have a feeling I may have found the one that could get me to change my way of thinking, but I won’t let myself have her. My eyes find Hailey as they always do, and I take in her movements, her laughter. I love to hear her laugh. The next song is a slow one, “Can’t Fight This Feeling” by REO Speedwagon. Liam jumps up and makes his way to Allison, pulling her into his arms. I watch them, wishing it was Hales and me. “Don’t leave me hanging, Emerson,” I hear her say. I look up to find her standing there with her hand held out, waiting for me. I reach out and take her hand, tugging her close. She wraps her hands around my neck and begins running her fingers through my hair. I place my arms around her waist and pull her as tight as I can get her. I glance over her shoulder and see that Liam and Allison are in there own little world. Good, that means there is less of a chance of them witnessing this. I told myself that I would keep my distance, but I can’t. I will never be able to turn her away, tell her no. Hailey brings her arms down and places them around my waist, hugging me close as she rests her head against my chest. I lean down and kiss the top of her head, and try like hell to memorize every minute, every single fucking second, of what it feels like to have her in my arms. This song, fuck me, it’s perfect for us, for me. I sing softly in her ear, hoping she understands what I’m trying to say. The song ends and Hailey slowly lifts her head from my chest. “Thanks for the dance,” she whispers as she leans up and kisses my cheek. I release her from my hold and she stumbles a bit. I would love to think that it’s my effect on her, but I’m pretty sure it’s the alcohol. I reach out and catch her with my arms, helping her regain her balance. “Looks like she’s had enough too,” Liam says as he steps up beside us. “Yeah, I think you’re right.” My voice is thick with emotion. I pray that he doesn’t notice. “I’m taking Allie to bed. Can you make sure Hales gets settled in?” “Sure, man. I’ll see you guys in the morning,” I tell him. Liam scoops Allison up in his arms and carries her into the house. Hailey falls against my chest, losing her balance once again. I wrap my arms around her. I can’t seem to control myself where she’s concerned. “I can’t feel my legs,” she mumbles against my chest. I kiss the top of her head. “I got you, angel,” I say, bending down and scooping her up in my arms. I carry her in the house and set her on the couch. I run back to the door, closing and locking it. I find Hailey where I left her, eyes closed breathing softly. She looks peaceful. I gently pick her up and carry her upstairs. Once I reach her room, I place her down on the bed, careful not to wake her. Her eyes pop open as I am pulling my arms out from underneath of her. My face is so close to hers, all I would have to do is lean in just a little and I could taste those sweet lips. Hailey loops her arms around my neck. “Don’t go,” she whispers.
Allison's POV
Allison decides she wants to take a nap, so she and Liam go to their room. I am too comfortable to move. I am curled up on the couch. It’s a rainy day, so there is not much else to do. Once I’m awake, it’s hard for me to go back to sleep no matter how tired I am. I’m weird like that. Aiden comes into the living room and I automatically lift my legs, inviting him to sit with me on the couch. I keep reminding myself that we are friends and we have done this exact thing a thousand times. He takes a seat on the opposite end of the couch and I rest my legs on his lap. “We watching a movie?” he asks me. “Yeah, but you can pick,” I tell him, tossing him the remote. Aiden grins and starts flipping through the channels. My head is turned towards the television, but my eyes are trained on Aiden. He is gorgeous. His brown hair is messy. I can tell he just ran his fingers through it after his shower this morning. I love his thick locks. My fingers itch to touch him. To run my fingers through his hair. Aiden settles on the Lifetime Movie Network. I smile. He knows me so well. “For me?” I ask and bat my eyelashes. Aiden just smiles and winks. He picks up my left foot and begins to massage it. This is new; he’s never done this before. Friends can give friends a foot massage, right? I lie there with his hands on my feet, working their magic. I’m trying to concentrate on the movie, but I can’t. I close my eyes to try to calm my racing heart. I focus on taking in deep even breaths. I feel my body relax and I start to drift off to sleep. I slowly wake up and open my eyes. I see that the television is muted and the house is quiet. I lift my head and I see that Aiden is still at his end of the couch. He’s awake and he’s watching me. “Hey. Sorry I fell asleep on you,” I say my voice raspy. I could really use something to drink. As if he can read my mind, Aiden leans over, plucks a bottle of water from the coffee table, and hands it to me. “Thanks,” I say, taking it from him and chugging half of it. Much better. “How was the movie?” I ask, my voice now back to normal. Aiden shrugs his shoulders. “I’m not sure, I didn’t finish it,” he says. “I glance at the television and see that it is, indeed, still on.” I look back at Aiden and raise my eyebrows in question. “You looked so peaceful, I didn’t want it to wake you up.” He shrugs. “I know you didn’t get a lot of sleep last night and needed to rest.” “So…uh…what did you do?” I ask. I’m not sure how to take his last statement. Do friends just do that? Do they go out of their way to make sure the other gets rested after a drunken night? He’s in the same spot as when I fell asleep. Did he…did he watch me? Aiden’s face flushes slightly. “I watched you,” he says softly. He watched me! I open my mouth to respond, and no words will come out. I’m stunned speechless. I open and close my mouth again, still nothing. I know I look like a damn fish right now, which is totally embarrassing, but… Holy Shit! Aiden watched me sleep for, what, like an hour? “You could have moved. I probably wouldn’t have woken up,” I tell him. “Yeah, that really wasn’t an option for me. Why would I want to move, when I can be close to my angel when she’s sleeping?” he asks.

Excerpt
Following after her, I find her bent over in front of the refrigerator holding the door open and staring at the contents inside. The way her ass is sticking out unleashes something inside me, and I go semi-hard just from watching her. I instantly feel the need to show her that I’m not some weak, damaged man. I walk up behind her and grab her by the waist, turning her around. Kicking the door shut behind me, I push her to the island, and if I thought I could get away with it, I’d be pressing myself up against so she could feel what she’s doing to me. She’s staring up at me with confusion in her big, brown eyes, and I wonder what the hell I’m doing.
“Hop up,” I tell her, and she complies immediately, surprising me by not fighting it.
I place my hands on her knees, spreading them and stepping closer to her so my hips are between her legs. As best as I can, I take a hold each one and wrap them around my waist, and she involuntarily tightens them around my middle, although her ass is still firmly planted on the counter. This isn’t how I imagined her legs wrapped around me for the first time, but I can’t deny that I don’t love the feel of her gripping my waist tightly.
“Arms around my neck, Charlie.” The confused expression on her face deepens, but she does as she’s told.
“What are you doing, Knox?” she asks, looking up at me, her face only inches from mine.
Swallowing hard, I ignore her question and bring my forehead to hers. “Just do this for me, okay? Don’t fight me on it. Just this once. I need to do this.”
She nods, and I’m not sure she knows what to expect, confirming it when I pull her off the counter. Gasping, she starts to struggle, and I have to brace myself against the counter to keep from falling. Jesus, this woman is so damn defiant, and it can be both sexy as hell and annoyingly irritating.
“Knox, what the hell?! Put me down!”
Fuck, I know I should probably listen to her, but I’ve gotten to this point and I’m not stopping until I can prove to myself that I haven’t completely lost all of my strength. She’s not exactly heavy, but her struggling is making it difficult to keep my one good arm around her as I make my way down the hallway, heading into the guest bedroom. Somewhere along the way she stops struggling, apparently having given up and figuring that it’s just easier to let me do this.
I’m slightly out of breath by the time I get to her bed, and I’m more than happy to release her from my arms. Relief washes over me when she plops on the bed, bouncing once. Whether the relief is from having been able to do it or from having freed myself of her weight. Either way, I’m fucking ecstatic, and even though I’m breathing heavy, it was a small victory for me and my bruised ego.
I begin backing away from her because I know the verbal assault is coming, and I don’t blame her, but I don’t regret it.

Excerpts
