Neighborly Affection hardcovers are coming

I’ve been working behind the scenes for a couple of months to get Neighborly Affection hardcovers in the pipeline, and they’re finally starting to roll out!

Playing the Game: Neighborly Affection Book 1 is available in hardcover now, and the rest of the books in the series will follow. I can’t wait to hold them! That’s my author proof copy of Playing the Game below; dog for scale. The real thing won’t have the gray “Not for Resale” warning on it. (Scroll down for an outtake from the photo sh...

New release: Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories

Today is the day! Creating Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories: A Neighborly Affection Companion has been a multiyear endeavor, and I’m delighted to finally be sharing Jay’s wisdom and vulnerability with everyone who loves the Neighborly Affection series.

A note for those who haven’t read the series: Tuesdays with Jay is not the place to start, unless you’re reading it in tandem with Playing the Game and Crossing the Lines. Jay’s storytelling complements Alice’s recounting of the developing ...

Coming soon: Tuesdays with Jay No. 31: Signaling Silence

M.Q. Barber's oh-so-fancy workspace: one laptop, a handful of Post-It notes, a pad of blank notes and a pencil, and printouts of notes for the chapter in the works. Oh, and caffeine. That's a must. Writing and revising a new novel involves bringing together a lot of notes I’ve jotted in various places, printing out some sections and scribbling new revisions on those pages, and meshing it all into a coherent chapter on the laptop.

2020 is going to be a big year. It’ll have a lot of hard work at the beginning, but all of that effort will be going toward making things run more smoothly afterward.

That’s basically where Jay is in Tuesdays with Jay No. 31: Signaling Silence — in the...

Can’t find the books? Here’s why

So I got an email from a reader today asking why Finding Their Balance (Neighborly Affection No. 5) was listed as “unavailable” at an online vendor.

That was the first I’d heard about it, so naturally I went looking to see what was going on. After confirming that all of my books except one–Playing the Game (Neighborly Affection No. 1)–had been removed from digital sales, I reached out to my publisher. Turns out they made a miscalculation and removed the books from online vendors before...

Coming soon: Tuesdays with Jay No. 30: Submissive Signaling

A cornfield under a cloudy sky at the beginning of fall. Summer gives way to fall in my neighborhood. I like to walk down to the cornfield in the mornings and see what the clouds say.

Fall is my favorite season. The crisp, cooling air under blanketing clouds; the leaves changing their shades as each day passes; the mugs of hot chocolate and apple cider around a roaring bonfire: I try my hardest to fill up on them all so the joy will last me the rest of the year.

And, of course, fall is when my writing group holds its annual retreat. This year, I...

Coming soon: Tuesdays with Jay No. 29: Mastered Submissive

Summer served up a fleeting moment of beauty during some yard work this week.

The muggy, oppressive heat of summer has settled in. I’m not fond of summer on the best of days–give me a crisp autumn breeze–but I’m especially not fond of days when, for example, a massive medical expense hits, the bathroom door breaks, and wasps build their fourth (!) nest in your yard in two months.

On those days, it really helps to take a step back and turn to a trusted friend for a compassionate ear and wise...

Coming soon: Tuesdays with Jay No. 28: Love, Mastered

Spring flowers amid green grass. Spring fills the world with glorious color.

Some days, you’re just happily going about your business, enjoying the beauty and warmth of spring, when life jumps up and smacks you in the face by turning your phone into a brick.

So yeah, that happened.

Jay is having a crisis of his own this month. His is more emotional, but then he’s also lucky enough to have Henry there to make his world right again.

The April edition of Tuesdays with Jay is No. 28: Love, Mastered. It’s a double-length jour...
