This is what relief is, the realization that after so many years...

This is what relief is, the realization that after so many years of waiting, or suffering, of endurance that measured me beyond anything I thought I was capable of, the words were spoken and the lives were knotted together as one thing, unbreakable and true. This is the moment before even a kiss was shared, the moment of coming home after such a lifetime spent wandering.

Is it the sun’s departure, is it cloud
and snowfall covering light,
where do I go when the earth
tilts on its axis and the days
grow shorter?  No longer entirely I,
for sure and certain,
half the me I was, half a shadow
following me around.

Winter makes me less,
or I make myself less and blame
it on the seasons, though they’ve
always returned, though I know
their schedule by now.  

I wish I knew where I hibernated,
these pieces of me that wait
for thaw, for heat, for
deep thunder of late summer,
for first chill and the sound
of birds contemplating south.

I wish I knew wholeness
in the days of long darkness.

Kept my patience all these years,
this is what I know of my spirituality,
of the strength in the conviction
to call myself what I call myself.  
Some would have thrown words,
sharpened and pointed, barbed
to stick and rip when forgetting is
attempted,
some would have thrown hands,
this I know to be true.  

Not once have I descended into cruelty,
never have these hands done anything
but reach out to hold.  

I am tender with those that have
never earned it, gentle in a way
that disrupts the misconceptions
they’ve clung to.  

Proudly, I say Buddhist, and think
of every ounce of love I’ve given
when none was returned.
