So long I’ve been doing this,
and it seems to be slowing down,
not speeding up.  
There were many of you, once,
so many that leaned in
and listened,
I was a single voice for a time,
words in an endless field
of images, then more came,
then more, some sounded as
I did, borrowed words from me,
permission-less, but what was one
to do?  

Less now, I drown in an ocean
I helped fill with letters,
with ache.  What I say
is so hardly a ripple anymore,
no one hears these
screams.  

Today, so many cling to short words,
to repetition manufactured
to seem monumental,
to the same cliche rearranged
to seem new, time and time
again.  

I’m still here, pouring out what
keeps refilling in me,
and one day, I’ll be the only one
to listen.

Everyone’s a day, they say,
the manifestation of how it feels
to live it.  Some are Friday nights,
all wide awake and in the thick of
the noise, ready for more, always
more. Some are Mondays,
the whole day, miserable about
every situation, never stop
reminding you how much they wish
they were a Saturday at around
seven thirty in the evening.  

She’s a Sunday morning, sometime
after eight a.m., I’m quite sure of it,
the smell of coffee and an early
Autumn breeze through the screen door,
she’s birdsong and sleepy eyes,
she’s comfort in a way you forget
you’ve ever been anywhere else.

I thought if she’s a Sunday morning,
I am probably a Wednesday afternoon,
and I have absolutely no idea
what that means.

There’s a vibration to humanity, a hum
subsonic and constant, a rumble of a
drone that comes from our speaking,
from the blades of flying machines,
from the rattle of engine as it
warms the planet with its emissions.  
We’re shaking this place,
disrupting and eroding stones older
than we can imagine,
unsettling what only knew stillness.

In how many ways can we undo
this place?

Will we be remembered for more
than those that brought
the ruin?
