Wrapping up what has been, without doubt, the most stunningly beautiful three weeks of my life. From showing the people I love the most the country I love the most, to marrying the woman of my dreams, to honeymooning for a quiet week to places we’ve never been, every moment has been one that will never leave me. Two nights remain, but the slideshow of memories will linger. What a life, what a world, what a woman.

Are there birds that follow the Fall,
autumnal migrators
that find solace in falling leaf,
in fog on mountains in early morning,
the light late to arrive?
Are we them, winged and peripatetic,
chasing the angled sun that
lends crispness to midday,
orange glow to the evenings?  

We’ll land shortly in Winter,
stay for the lights and softness
of snow on snow,
we’ll quiet and rest through
first growth in Spring, through
fire in our treetops when Summer
burns,

but it is Autumn we seek.

Counted back, used these snarled fingers
to keep tally, all the years I spent alone.
Hurdling down that empty road, headlights
spilling liquid like across the white line,
we watched for deer like half-asleep guards
given first watch then left, forgotten
for sleep.

I am beginning to forget who I was before you,
and this cannot be.  We are shaped by the years
we spend waiting, the meals eaten in silence
under bare bulb, later than we should,
but what’s the point of dinnertime
or breakfast time or any time when it’s
never shared?  

Lost count in the half blink after headlight
blindness, first car to come our way in
over an hour.  Tired hands from tiring days,
from holding steering wheels, fingers
letting go of the numbers they held,
of the years the numbers counted.  

We climbed the stairs, rinsed the residue
of the road from our skin
and climbed into bed,
together.
