Kept my patience all these years,
this is what I know of my spirituality,
of the strength in the conviction
to call myself what I call myself.
Some would have thrown words,
sharpened and pointed, barbed
to stick and rip when forgetting is
attempted,
some would have thrown hands,
this I know to be true.
Not once have I descended into cruelty,
never have these hands done anything
but reach out to hold.
I am tender with those that have
never earned it, gentle in a way
that disrupts the misconceptions
they’ve clung to.
Proudly, I say Buddhist, and think
of every ounce of love I’ve given
when none was returned.
