I have a heart built for loving every single living thing on this silly planet. I am drawn to wild things, so completely drawn.

I don’t know where these come from,
after all it’s just meat
between these ears,
electrified and humming,
but meat all the same.

Why are we gifted what we
are gifted, why do we
struggle with all that
plagues us?

Where, where is the source
of this?

I am frightened, often
by the pathless wander
these take,
the lack of cohesion,
the floating up
and off.

I am unstuck
and gravity searching,
lost
and I cannot translate
the signs.

This is what strength looks like. This is its form, the shape it adopts when it needs skin to wander in. This is what kindness looks like in the face of mistreatment, this is compassion for the unearned. This is what tenderness can be when it’s delivered to those who forget how to give it. This is strength, made tangible and real, made human. This is strength, and I am in awe of it.

Cohen called it
a mandate
to enter the dark,
said it was called down
from a deity
he dared not name,
threw hyphens
in place of o’s
out of respect.

Poetry is an order
shouted silently
to not stand still
at the edge
of some black forest,
but to wander in
and inside it
build what we may
once, call
home.
