Smoothed yourself
of ruffle and wrinkle
and stood at the edge
of all that darkness
wild look in wild eye
center black growing
if there was fear
it wasn’t showing
tree on tree until
nothing remained,
until all that dark
consumed
all that light
somehow
the shape of you
stood out
against the
gloom.

Unearthed as though
discovered,
found as though carved
from some single slab,
chisel marks left
like scars.
Maybe I was beneath it
all this while,
locked in and shouting
against the marble
and dirt, screaming out
for hands
though I knew not
what to call them.

and blood.

Strong contrast against the snow,
what was once a bird
lays flightless and still.
Her feet knew branches, I know this
because they curl and wrap
as if perched somewhere
I don’t have eyes to see.
Not yet.
Snowflakes grow as if on cue,
as if funeral instructed
and sympathetic, as if they’ve
done this before, and will
again. Burial, this December
storm, one layer at a time,
she’s no heat left to melt
the blanket that falls.
Tail feathers out, and I wonder
if she’s balanced
against some breeze, perched
where I cannot watch.
Silently I witness her vanish
beneath white quiet, and whisper
wordless things into the air
between myself and what was once
a bird.
