God’s Image and Likeness – Atheists Welcome

What does it mean to be ‘made in the image and likeness of God?’

Does it mean God acts, thinks and looks like us?

Or, like so many other things where the one power we call ‘God’ is concerned, we’ve got it backwards?

Could it be that we’ve made God in our image as an anthropomorphic idol instead of It’s image?

What would the one power we call ‘God’ – the energy in and through everything – what would its image and likeness be in human beings?

Certainly not like us in form. But then like us, how?

Peace, Kindness, Joy, Innovation, Love, Creativity, Compassion, Forgiveness, Respect, Grace.

And what of Fear, Anger, Grievances, Blame, Punishment, Hatred? Could they be the misuse we make of the one power we share with God that we project, like a movie in a movie theater, onto the God we’ve made in our own image and likeness?

No doubt primitive humanity needed an anthropomorphic God. But do we?

Labor Day

The Way We Worked – A Time of Transition – If We Always Do What We Always Did….

First, has it ever been ‘we’? Hasn’t there always been a deep divide between the have a lots and the have less? There was a time for the 25-30 years after WWII, when the gap was smaller and the so-called middle class seemed to be growing. But that was because Europe and most of the world was in ruins and unable to compete. But as the world rebuilt with equipment and infrastructure newer than our own and as we continued with pre-war infrastructure and policies, the competition increased and as we shifted to the right and distrust of government grew, we’ve kept ourselves from making the necessary investments in infrastructure and education. Globalization and technology have also contributed to this trend. So, gradually the middle class shrunk and the divide has roared back.

Yes, the middle class American Dream has always been the ideal. But we seem to be living in a new gilded age, akin to the way ‘we’ worked in the 1890’s – some of us barely making it, others conspicuously consuming and a small middle class.

Yet globalization and technology offer the hope, not just of a return of the middle class, but of a world that works for everyone and everything. Air pollution, water shortages, latent racism, diminishing natural resources, and climate change are all opportunities to put people to work.

If we always do what we always did, we’ll always get what we always got.

Is it time for new private/public partnerships, not just giving community functions over to for-profit corporations and walking away, but intelligent, non-bureaucratic, on-going regulation oversight and cooperation between private and public entities?

If we always do what we always did, we’ll always get what we always got.

Is it time for a new spirituality, not a punishing, jealous external sky-god, but an internal compassionate and blessing one.

If we always do what we always did, we’ll always get what we always got.

Is it time to let go of the old shibboleths of ‘socialized medicine,’ a ‘war’ on drugs and poverty, and of war, period? How many aircraft carriers and submarines do we need? How well are they protecting us from IS?

If we always do what we always did, we’ll always get what we always got.

What else could we do with all the money going into defense, the NSA and the so-called justice system?

The way we worked, isn’t working anymore. Isn’t it time we changed? There’s nothing wrong with our ideals and dreams, it’s just that the way we work at them is broken. Isn’t it time for a change?

A Finger Pointing at the Moon

I was half way thru my tai chi outside this morning when I noticed the moon. It had been there all along, I just hadn’t noticed it. It was nearly full, beautiful and inspiring. I always get good vibes when I see the moon. That reminded me of a famous zen concept. Something to the effect that once you raise your arm to point to the moon, you no longer need to keep pointing at it. You see it and you can lower your arm.

To me, that’s how religion could be. Spirit is fully present all the time. But we don’t notice It. Once religion helps us notice it, become aware of the moon – experience the wonder of our reality as spirit, we can lower our arm. That is, religion has accomplished its purpose and we can transcend it. It’s not the rituals, prayers and ceremonies that are spirit. They’re merely reminders of Spirit, the finger pointing to the moon. Once we have seen the moon, we can lower our arm.

Bloated Nothingness

It isn’t: ‘Get your bloated nothingness out of the way,’ but rather, let your bloated nothingness be taken from you. Spirit is our fundamental reality. If we let our bloated nothingness be taken from us, Spirit is all that remains. Each situation, thought or desire is an opportunity to let your bloated nothingness go.

Haven’t you noticed how grace works in your life when you let it? How intuition, creativity and innovation just ‘pop’ into your mind? Why does it work that way? Because we’ve let our bloated nothingness go. The rabbi Jesus said something similar: “It is not I who doeth the work, but my father in heaven (your father/mother God within your heart and mind) who doeth it.” So take a step back. Take a deep breath. Count to ten, let your bloated nothingness be taken from you and let the power within doeth the work.

Get Your Bloated Nothingness Out of the Way of the Divine Circuits

Are you telling God how to behave? What to think and what to do? What’s good and bad? For example, ‘family’ – whatever that means, is it good or bad? What about crime ‘families’? Is it God or us who says families are good, but only if they’re two parent, heterosexual families, behave well and go to church regularly?

No, really. Aren’t we limiting God with all our twisted, dogmatic convoluted beliefs? What if God is so beyond our traditional puny beliefs that we are missing our chances for connection with It?

When was the last time God spoke to you? Are you sure it was ‘Him’? Could it have been old programming from your parents, ministers or politicians? Do these people speak for God? Does the devil sound like God sometimes? Did God create the devil? If God is God how come there’s a devil, disease, war and suffering?

What form does the word of God have to take before we can accept it? Where do we have to receive it? In church? Could it come in multiple forms, anywhere?

Just for a moment, forget all the twisted, traditional, convoluted answers and dogma and consider this. What if our traditional forms of the one power we call ‘God’, the anthropomorphic view of God as Zeus-like or an ancient Hebrew Rabbi, are actually limiting us, holding us back, keeping our good from flowing to us? Are we missing, ignoring or rejecting our good because the form isn’t exactly what we were taught to expect? How does your good have to show up in your life before you can accept it? Could it already be in and around you now?

A Pair of Docs

Isn’t  the very heart of paradox the idea that all the greatness and tragedy of humanity comes from the thought that ‘this need not be’?

Because ‘this need not be’, I criticize my wonderful wife for constantly misplacing her reading glasses. Because this need not be humanity learned to fly.

Because I often can’t tell what needs to be and what need not be, I’m trying to shift from my limited external ego-centric view and seek guidance from the still small voice within. So I ask that the power we call ‘God’ grant me the serenity to accept the things that need to be. The courage to change the things that need not be. And the wisdom to know the difference.
