Don’t Should on Yourself, Part 3 or 4
“Shoulding also makes people fanatical tyrants,” Devorah said, “vicious and cruel, needing to impose their ‘shoulds’ their view of life, on everyone and everything, despite any objective evidence that they may be wrong. Scientific and other forms of evidence contrary to their ‘should’ are ridiculed, debunked and denied. If they have the discipline, wisdom and guidance to do the ‘right’ thing and avoid the evils of big government, homosexuality, racial mixing, sex of any kind other than the missionary position, then so should everyone else. And if everyone else lacks the necessary discipline, wisdom and guidance then those who have it will teach them, punish them and harass them until they do.”

Don’t Should on Yourself! Part 2 of 4
“Another thing shoulding does,” Devorah said, “and btw, shoulds have a place and I’ll talk more about that in the fourth post, is it keeps you chained to your littleness and fear. It says you can know, must know what’s going on and what’s right not just for you, but for the rest of civilization and the entire universe. It cuts life down to human size. It makes the power we call god, anthropomorphic – in human form, and maintains the illusion of our separation from it. It reduces the limitless sprawl of life to a set of ‘shoulds’, a set of rules for thinking, feeling, behaving and dreaming. It deprives us of our birthright as something unimaginably wonderful and greater, something good and kind and reduces us to a quivering mass of anger, fear and guilty pleasures.”

The Sun
Devorah stood before the multitude. “Tell us what you do, Devorah,” a well dressed man said, “to stay so close to God. So that we may do it also.”
Devorah smiled. “Indeed, my friend. It is possible for you to do it also, for all of you to do it!” She opened her arms to enfold the people.
“First, I do not deny my experience, good, bad or ugly. I know that the invisible benevolent power we call God is in, through, and around each experience. I know that if I don’t dwell on my experience, good, bad or ugly, it will change, become something else. Thoughts and experiences are like clouds passing before the sun; they are fleeting and ephemeral. The sun, the power we call god, is constant, always shining everywhere. I can not make the good things last, nor deny the bad things. But I can know, if I choose to know, that behind each, the sun shines and another thought/experience awaits. I have but to refuse to dwell and choose to let my judgment of the experience go and turn my mind to the possibility of something new, different and probably better.”

Unity
Devorah opened her arms to embrace the multitude. “If you but recognized how little stands between you and your awareness of your union with your brothers and sisters! Be not deceived by the illusions of size, weight, and solidity. The body only seems to be immovable. Within you and them is a force that no illusions can resist. The seeming differences that keep us separate from one another exist only on the level of form, part of the ego’s plan to convince us that separation is reality and unity is illusion. It is so even with the Canaanites, Democrats & Republicans. Have you not felt the subtle Presence which flows through all things when you smile upon your brothers?”

Friday Funnies – Getting Older
Chris Rock says: “When you die at 72, no matter what you die of, it’s natural causes. Even if you get hit by a truck…’cause if you was younger, you’d have got out of the way!”

Why so many children and why now?
Why so many children and why now? You don’t just turn away a child left on your door step. But when another, and another, and another is left…? Many come from the three Central American countries with the highest crime rates and lawlessness. Many run rather than be forced to join one of the many criminal gangs that control their countries and neighborhoods. What guidance do our American ideals and common humanity offer? Could there be an opportunity here if we get centered in ourSelves, let go of our sense of lack, fear, blame and anger? Lord knows we can’t find it if we go on as we have. What does American ‘exceptionalism’ really mean, now?
