It says you can know, must know what’s going on and what’s right not just for you, but for the rest of civilization and the entire universe. It cuts life down to human size. It makes the power we call god, anthropomorphic – in human form, and maintains the illusion of our separation from it. It reduces the limitless sprawl of life to a set of ‘shoulds’, a set of rules for thinking, feeling, behaving and dreaming. It deprives us of our birthright as something unimaginably wonderful and greater, something good and kind and reduces us to a quivering mass of anger, fear and guilty pleasures.”
