First two scenes
Sherlock and Lady in Red eating fish and chips talking quite happily. Sherlock notices drone? He looks up, tells her something and they both walk slowly away.
Next one is Sherlock alone, reading a letter, sniffing it, folding it up. He gets up, puts it in his coat and leaves.
Is she his mind palace companion? The eating in mind, companiinship, someone who listens to him. While he is sitting alone on the bank. In rain.

Got to say this again: a first kiss in this show just can’t be in an ep 3 (worst of all as a cliffhanger). You just can NOT give nasty homophobe critics 2 years to talk about how the show will now be ruined. You need to have it, then move on and take one ep (at least) just a week later to show the show is still cool and awesome and two male characters kissing doesn’t change anything or ruin anything in any way. In this case you also would want to make the audience more invested for the trauma of ep 3 as well of course. So my votes for this kiss this series are end of ep 1 or early ep 2. Possibly end of ep 2 but no later.

But then, I would also have said “You can’t have Mary Morstan shoot Sherlock, clearly be revealed as a psychopathic villain, have John and Sherlock forgive her and be all cozy, then let that situation sit for hiatus. It will be totally confusing to the audience, out of character for the leads, and critics will hate it.”
And yet.
Well I won’t deny that it’s been an annoying hiatus. Pausing for three years when you’re at the lowest–“You’re reading that wrong! Get it right!!”–moment of a book or movie just wouldn’t happen. But, I guess since I never doubted for a second that it was a false forgiveness on John and Sherlock’s parts, I see that as merely setting up another rug pull for the causals so I’ve never really minded it. The pretend coziness is such an obvious plot device for me that I see it as relatively typical. It was so strongly contradicted elsewhere in that ep for Sherlock, and by three series of characterization for John, that it was clearly unreliable narrator/writer being sneaky stuff. But then again, I happen to think that these guys are excellent writers. Those who don’t have chosen to believe it was a “plot hole” or just bad writing. For me, if the casuals actually took that to mean that she’s not a villain (and that wasn’t confusing for many casuals, they just simply bought it!!), and if fans actually thought that Sherlock and John are suddenly fools who totally weren’t the people we thought, then the former deserve to be “surprised” yet again to find out she is, and the latter left the show anyway and imo deserve to miss out on the resolution. I know that sounds harsh. Ymmv. And I think btw that some critics and some fans didn’t like S3 because it doesn’t make tons of sense if you’re missing out on the main love story. So many things happen that have no explanation outside of that. I guess one can argue that you should be able to successfully write at multiple levels so that every last viewer enjoys it in some way, but that’s pretty hard. The ratings were higher than ever for S3. And those for TAB weren’t too shabby either. There are still many many people who genuinely can’t see the love story but still think it’s a fun show about cases. And most of us still love it and think it (TAB at least) was written specifically for us. That’s pretty impressive imo.
ep1/ep2 of S4 or S5? If you mean S4, I think you’re very optimistic

Haha I do try to be very optimistic. I totally get that some see pessimism as a protective mechanism but I find that even though being rationally (imo!!) optimistic does lead to occasional disappointment, that’s far outweighed by feeling just plain happier the other 98% of that time. Anyway, I just think the signs are pointing to it happening soon. (And I am not alone in this at all) But who knows, yes, maybe the progression in S4 will just be a love confession and no kiss until S5. But, as much as it would pain me, if we get to mid S4e3 and it hasn’t happened, I will honestly be hoping for S5!
Very fair points! I still think that we are aiming for S4E3 (within the first 40 minutes), not because your points are not valid but because I don’t think Moftiss cares about what people think. They wrote this show thinking it would be some marginal stuff watched by a few die-hards, and we know that they’ve had their timeline down since the beginning - I have no reasons to believe that they would change it to please the casual viewers. But hey - if it happens in S4E1 or E2, I’m certainly not going to complain!
PS: I make no distinction between a full, unequivocal love declaration and a kiss - maybe I should? So when I say IT’s going to happen in S4E3, I mean either one or the other. I believe that it will entirely depend on the context - I do not see a kiss occurring in a 3 garridebs epidode, for example, but a love declaration - yes. And it might be “one sided” - as if John is unconscious, and Sherlock says that he loves him, and when he wakes up he doesn’t remember anything so that casual viewers can spend another two years going - god forbid - that “maybe Sherlock is in love with John but John is not gay”.
