Philip Seymour Hoffman: the good times

I’ve been going through a lot of blogsites looking for posts about him; happily, all those I found are positive, utterly regretful and exhibiting wide knowledge of his work.

PSHUNhappily, I haven’t found a single mention anywhere of one of my favourite movies: State and Main. This was my first on-screen sighting of Philip, and I took to him instantly – as did Stringer! We thought him quite extraordinary: not handsome (in the Hollywood sense), overweight, nerdy specs … and yet he was totally [sear...

Weekly Writing Challenge: My Funny Valentine?

Rather than dwelling upon wilting long-stemmed red roses and unbelieveably expensive padded cards (which neither Stringer nor I ever had the taste for), I prefer to turn my thoughts to a particular Valentine’s Day …

Yes, you guessed it!: the Windy City is renowned for many things; and possibly to the chagrin of its elders – but then again, possibly not, in terms of the numbers who come as gawpers – one of them is what’s referred to as ‘St Valentine’s Day’ of 1929.

I used three on-line sites to...

Hello, breakfatht …!

Sylvester definitely didn’t have mine in mind … and his intended breakfast never got to be consumed …

VERY unlike mine, consumed whenever I feel I can wait 15–18 minutes. Which isn’t too bad, as it allows time for the brewing and pulling of The Perfect Shot!

lebo-breadThe first thing I do is put the oven on at 200°C and pop in an oven-tray covered with a piece of baking paper, letting it heat it for 5–6 minutes.

Then I put in one of these

Keeping the timer on the same time you heated the oven for, start i...

And now for something entirely different …

It’s over 8 minutes, but it’s huge fun – the production team would’ve had a ball making it! – and it’s fairly eye-opening. I just love it!

The donkey with one (only) hind leg …

Last Friday morning I delivered the first of my scheduled library author talks.

This is the point at which you’re supposed to cry “Oh! – now I get that silly title!” …

[expectant pause]

You don’t, eh? – you have no idea what I’m talking about …? Sighh … OK, we’ll leave that and move on.

In truth, I was a bit nervous about this first one, and I can readily explain it by saying that no-one had told me any of the following:

what the library users would be expecting from me
what the people running the...

Daily Prompt: Good Fences?

Who are your neighbors? Tell us a story — real or invented — about the people on the other side of your wall.

Show us NEXT DOOR.

It’s one of those marvellous, speaking countenances – but 45?… 55?

Still, you’d pick her for an Aussie anywhere.

“My childhood in rural NSW was very happy: however, my parents separated and divorced when I was 12, so the family was split and fractured”— her brother going to the father and she and her sister the mother. She did well at school (a good student, S...

Weekly Photo Challenge: Selfie

Not having a smartphone, I’m restricted to my webcam, with which I’ve been keeping weekly record of my hair clippering since 19th December.

Said re-growth is not very impressive, alas! – it’s has never grown so slowly. I think I must’ve given it a frightful shock (as well as meself) …

ALL creatures are beautiful!

This is my Irish friend Deirdre.

She loves animals.

I somewhat foolishly asked her for a roll-call of the pets living in her house, and she provided it – in spades! And note that this doesn’t include any of the children …[grin]

OKIn the house: 3 dogs, 2 cats, 33 adult/juvenile fish, uncounted fish spawn and a plague of water snails.

Outside: Hedgehog hibernating in one shed, robin family own the other shed, a mama fox raises her babies every year at the end of the garden and joins us for snacks i...
