Reach Your Goals by Learning to Harness the Power of Tiny Habits

It’s a month into the New Year and I’m happy to report that my first quarter goals are on track! But it has nothing to do with my amazingly strong willpower (don’t have any of that!) or an abundance of free time (also missing!). I owe my success so far solely to learning to harness the power of tiny habits. One of the first books I read in 2019 on my way to my Goodreads

Stepping into the Light – Researching the Scottish Highlands

There’s a saying among writers to write what you know, but quality research can fill in the gaps. So when I started to write Stepping into the Light, I knew that I would have a lot of gaps to fill, starting by researching the Scottish Highlands. Although, I should probably back up a bit first. My original idea for this book started with a dream that contained elements of Snow White along with a wicked

Stepping into the Light – Why I Choose To Write About Castles

There’s just something about a castle to fire the imagination and make every girl dream of being a princess. And with several semi-recent royal weddings in England, there has also been a rise in novels featuring royalty from fictional countries. So why would I choose to write about castles too? Over the years, I’ve collected a folder of story ideas that percolate on the back burner of my brain until one rises to the top

Stepping Into the Light – Sometimes the Most Heroic Live in Plain Sight

The seeds for the first book in the Within the Castle Gates series started as a dream that quite honestly had a bit of a Snow White fairy tale twist. I woke up thinking about a heroine whose scars were actually a blessing instead of a curse. In fact, having already survived the worst life had to give, she embodied the fact that sometimes the most heroic live in plain sight. Overlooked. Scarred. Judged. Belittled.

It’s a New Year With New Books and a New Direction

Are you a New Year’s goal setter? Or do you prefer not to set yourself up for failure like the gazillion others whose resolutions will only last another week if they’re lucky? Ha! Actually, I’ve learned a lot about goal setting from my failure to fulfill those long lists of wishes. Mostly because I tend to bite off more than I can chew. And I aim too high without thinking through all the steps involved

I Survived Another Year…How Did I Do?

It’s that time of year again when I pause to reflect back on my journey over the previous twelve months…and ask myself “how did I do?” What progress did I make toward my goals? What worked well? What could I have done differently? And what changes do I need to make as I turn the corner into 2019? My word for 2018 was LOVE. To love God, my family, my friends, my neighbor, and my

Exhale Stress and Inhale Hope This Season

Anyone else stressed that there’s only one week to go until Christmas? Maybe it’s time to exhale stress and inhale hope this season. The college boy got home in the middle of the night. The high school boy is approaching finals later this week. The Princess and her father both have work. And I’ve got detailed lists of work and writing things I still need to do  so I can take a break for our

Paying It Forward Once Again

Since it’s the season of gift-giving, it’s only natural that my mind has turned not only to my Christmas shopping list, but also to those more intangible gifts I seem to treasure more and more as the years go by. The gifts of Faith, family, and even storytelling have literally transformed who I am…and that’s why I’m paying it forward once again. As a child, my Christmas list and focus was on the immediate and

Fueling the Dream for the Long Haul

When I started blogging in 2009, I was on a journey toward my dream of being published as a novelist. At the time, I had one non-fiction book in print, a dozen articles published, and had submitted my fiction manuscript to a writing contest for the very first time. (Not to mention, I’d already been writing, taking classes, and attending conferences for a few years before that.) My early blog posts were all about the

Ready or Not, Life Rolls On

Time flies and life rolls on. Coming off a weekend stuffed with turkey and pie followed by the annual pull-out-the-tree-and-decorate-on-Black-Friday tradition, I’m internally reeling at how fast this year has gone by. And how much I still would like to get done before the end of 2018. Then, right in the midst of flipping calendar pages and editing entire books and updating my work and home to-do lists…a major life milestone slipped up on us.
