My Trip Down Memory Lane – 2007

(This summer, while there will be a few road trips on our family’s horizon, I’m taking a virtual trip down memory lane back to when my writing adventure began. Today’s flashback takes us to 2007.) The year of 2007 was a year of growth and application.  Determined to learn all I could about the publishing industry, I attended the Christian Writers’ Guild Conference again and continued working through the Apprentice Course to develop my writing

My Trip Down Memory Lane – 2006

(This summer, while there will be a few road trips on our family’s horizon, I’m taking a virtual trip down memory lane back to when my writing adventure began. Today’s flashback takes us to 2006.) The year 2006 dawned with a feeling of expectation. After all, my first book manuscript, Pigskin Parables, had been accepted by The Writer’s Edge service and I just knew that publishers would find the idea captivating. Someone was sure to

My Trip Down Memory Lane – 2000 to 2005

This summer, while there will be a few road trips on our family’s horizon, I’m taking a virtual trip down memory lane back to when my writing adventure began. Today’s flashback takes us to the turn of the century. (How old does that make me sound?) Once upon a time, there was a busy mother of two toddlers who dreamed of someday writing a book. You see, she’d been an avid reader all her life

Happy Memorial Day

Like many here in the United States, I’m taking the day off to spend time with my family and recharge my personal batteries. Except with the reason for the holiday at the top of my mind, I’m also taking time to remember those who have gone before and the legacy they’ve left behind. (This is especially timely since my youngest is currently packing for a school trip to visit colonial Williamsburg, New York City, and

Walking in Another Person’s Shoes

In the past month, I’ve taken two trips to the Glen Eyrie Castle in the Garden of the Gods near Colorado Springs. (Lucky me!) Each time, I slept in a very different room–on purpose–because I wanted to spend my time walking in another person’s shoes. During the first trip, I had the “honeymoon suite” at the top of the tower. A gigantic room that dwarfed the king sized bed and left a vast amount of

The Author Toolbox: Why CoSchedule is Worth Every Penny

In the long journey toward becoming a multi-published author, there have been both pitfalls and stepping stones. However, discovering CoSchedule as a social media scheduling tool catapulted me forward into a comprehensive content strategy and marketing plan wrapped into one easy-to-use program. And just when I thought CoSchedule was as good as it gets, they’ve made it even better, leaving me more time (and mental energy) as an author to spend time writing my next

Unlock the Power of Strengths and Weaknesses

We’re all good at something. And we all have room to grow. But somewhere between the two extremes, it’s possible to unlock the power of your strengths and weaknesses and accelerate your growth. Here’s what I mean. Between two trips to the castle with two separate groups of middle school students–and despite years of knowing each other through our local writers’ group–my co-leader and I discovered how very different we are when it comes to

We Are Better Together

There’s just something magical that happens when a group of writers spend time together. Whether it’s at a castle (like I am right now, lucky me!) or a local meeting or a larger conference, fill a room with creative people and suddenly two plus two equals five or more. Why? Because we are better together. For one, there’s freedom when we rub shoulders with others who speak our language. No longer do we have to

What It Looks Like to Be Living the Dream

Want to know what it looks like to be living the dream? I spent last night in this room … at the top of a tower in a castle. That’s right. A castle. I’m at the Glen Eyrie castle for a few days. Writing in the early mornings, then teaching and mentoring a group of middle school writers for the rest of the day. I am literally living, breathing, talking, and dreaming about stories all

Change Sometimes Requires a Detailed Plan

Change is hard, especially when trying to uproot or overcome something that’s been around for awhile and has put down roots. (And I’m not talking about the dandelions that think Spring is the perfect time to camp out in the middle of my lawn.) Whether it’s major overhauls on a book manuscript or weaving new habits into an already packed schedule, sometimes change requires a detailed plan. This is especially true when juggling two (or
