School Teacher Louise Glasgow & the Backpack Nourishment Program #WATWB

When 6th grade math teacher Louise Glasgow realized that many students in her school (Thomas C. Boushall Middle School) were going home hungry and had few resources for food even at home, she teamed up with her church in Richmond to start the Backpack Nourishment Program.

Special backpacks were made for the hungry students, catering specifically to each child's needs (noting allergies and religious beliefs). The young teacher packs these backpacks meticulously every Thursday night and brings t...

Can you really be pain-free and play mobile games while undergoing surgery? Why yes.

So a funny thing happened last week - I went viral (again!). Well, mini-viral, at least. Allow me to explain.

It all began when a colleague of mine told me of a case she had done the previous day. The young male patient was being operated on for a fracture of his leg. She had taken his picture (with permission) during the surgery and I asked her to share it with me to put up online.

The viral photo where a patient is happily playing mobile games while doctors operate on his leg thanks to spinal anaesthesia
Well, as you can see in the image above, the orthopedic surgeons are busy operating on his broken leg on one side...

Are you God-fearing... or God-loving?

"She is a God-fearing girl..." That line has always made me wonder.
I know we say it in a good sense and I know it is a common phrase but hear me out.

Why do you pray to God?
Why do you attend Sunday mass or take fasts on particular holy months or conduct pujas for deities? Why do you go to temples, churches, mosques et al? Even when you go dark and participate in all these wars both offline and online to prove your God is awesome and everyone else's God is apparently unworthy of Thor's hammer.....

On finding Real-Life Heroes from All Over the World #AtoZKindness

For this year's #AtoZChallenge, I chose the rather unique and odd theme of Everyday Heroes of Kindness and Compassion.

Most people wrote about stuff they are good at - fiction, artwork, music, cocktails, poetry. And they wrote brilliantly on it too, using their knowledge and observations to amazing effect.

Me? I had nothing!I started off with an absolutely blank slate. I did not have a detailed list of good deeds in my pocket. All I knew was that I was tired of the negativity in the media. And...

Principal Mo Zhengao was a truly selfless Hero #AoZChallenge

Mo Zhengao was no ordinary school Principal.
The monikor given to him by some may seem demeaning - the 'Begging Principal.'
To nearly twenty thousand students in Du'an Yao county high school over 30 years, he was known by a different name - 'Principal Dad.'

The mountainous regions of Guangxi province Duan Yao in China offer a harsh environment for economic development and rising beyond the clutches of poverty. And yet for over two decades, students from this impoverished region high school have...

Yahya Hashemi and Ala Amiry are Heroes of Kindness #AtoZChallenge

When Sean Jalbert saw the sign outside the small restaurant in Montreal, he was suspicious. The sign taped on the door of the Mediterranean themed 'Marche Ferdous' written in English as well as French, read:
"People with no money welcome to eat for free."Sean decided to test them out and so went in and pretended not to have any money. He was blown away as they told him to have a seat and order anything he liked and take what he wanted from the fridge as well. After he finished eating, he...

'Love, XYZ' : Compassion from Strangers #AtoZChallenge #WATWB

What if, instead of the constant photos of hatred and photoshopped images spewing distrust, you chose to share images of random acts of kindness? Would it really be that bad a thing?
Each image below tells a story. A story of kindness and humanity that needs no explanation from me.

White House of Anaheim: A Tale of Kindness Returned #AtoZChallenge

For many years, chef Bruno Serato had been serving fancy gourmet food at his iconic restaurant, The White House of Anaheim in California to rich patrons and celebrities.
He had another agenda though.
Bruno Serato, an Italian immigrant who entered the US with just $200 in his pocket as a child, worked his way up from a busboy to being a restaurant owner with just one purpose in life - feeding the poor children of California

Meghan Vogel is a Selfless Hero of Sportsmanship #AtoZChallenge

17 year old Meghan Vogel won the 1600 meter at the Division III girls state meet at Jesse Owens Stadium in Columbus in 2012. But much to her amusement, nobody remembers that.
Sure, they clapped when she won. But they actually got up on their feet and cheered for her when she came in last at the next race!

With just an hour between the 1600 meters and the 3200 meters race, Meghan was exhausted going in and rapidly fell off the pace as the laps went by, giving her mom Ann (watching from the stand...

A Uruguayan named Jose #AtoZChallenge

Do you know the name, Jose Mujica?
Remember your answer.

He used to be a bad guy when he was young - a guerilla warfare fighter, he used to rob gun clubs, bad banks and corrupt businesses and give the money to the poor. He was shot multiple times and spent a total of 14 years in jail for his crimes during those years, including solitary imprisonment which broke him mentally - and transformed him.

President Jose Mujica living off less than $1250 with his wife and two dogs, including his three-legged guard dog who fights with him for possession of the chair cushion.
Even after landing a honest job, as he turned 80, Jose Mujica still dutifully went to work every day...
